  1. I think there are a lot of people who have no problem cheering all the Cubs except Edmonds.
  2. Nobody is saying Lee has been terrible. You are just assuming because some of us don't think he's an All-Star that means we think he's terrible, and then using absolutely no statistical basis for your opinion. He should get better, but up to this point he in now way deserves All-Star consideration. He'll get it, but he doesn't deserve it, and he certainly deserves less consideration than Soto, Ramirez, Fukudome, Soriano (although injured), Zambrano, Dempster, Wood, Marmol, Theriot and DeRosa. There's a difference between bashing a player and showing that he isn't perfect, or the best in the league.
  3. What stat do you want? 7th in the NL in slugging among 1B, 16th in the NL in OBP, 8th in OPS, 6th in HRs, 8th in batting average, 11th in walks, 7th in K's. 8th in RARP, 7th in VORP, 6th in EQR, 9th in Win Shares. He does lead the NL in DPs, though. And ABs. Nobody's hating on players. Some of us are just being realistic, and some of us are spouting nonsense to make themselves feel better about a baseless opinion. Derrek Lee has no business being an all-star this year based on numbers.
  4. Lee gets to a lot of balls that are generally out of the 1B zone (OOZ), where he's 4th in the NL. However, he leads NL 1B in fielding errors with 5, and is third worst among NL 1B in all errors with 6 (Votto 8, Delgado 7). His overall fielding rating (RZR) puts him a distant 4th in the NL, in a cluster with Adrian Gonzalez, Todd Helton, Mark Teixeira, Ryan Howard and Joey Votto (who gets to a TON of balls OOZ). The best defensive 1Bs, this year, by far, to this point, have been Pujols and Berkman. That cluster of 6 is in the middle, average to above average, and the other 6 1B (Adam LaRoche, Carlos Delgado, Prince Fielder, Conor Jackson, James Loney and Mike Jacobs) are below average. So yes, Lee has been average to above average in the field this year.
  5. I was kind of secretly hoping that it was Pat Burrell, so the Cubs could claim him.
  6. Holland could realistically sandbag it vs. Romania, and neither France nor Italy could advance.
  7. DeRosa as an All Star? I don't know about that. I think the only two positions where the Cubs shouldn't get all star consideration is 2B and CF. DeRosa's actually been the third best 2B in the NL this year (though far behind Uggla and Utley). If there's any position that shouldn't get all-star consideration after CF, it's 1B. Yeah because he has been the fourth best offensive first baseman, and the best defensive first baseman means he shouldn't get any consideration? Closer to the 12th best offensive first baseman with a .275 EQA, behind Berkman, Pujols, Gonzalez, Helton, Fielder, Conor Jackson, and Teixeira in the NL alone. And Lee hasn't exactly been the best defensive first baseman this year. Average, though.
  8. Quite possibly the most balanced (L/R) lineup the Cubs have featured all year.
  9. Their 3rd degree win ratio is higher.
  10. Holland's really had some rough football luck the last several years. About time they get on a roll.
  12. He has the Cubs with 5 All-Stars, only one of them being a position player. And that one was DeRosa. Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Fukudome, Soto and even Theriot also deserve consideration. That's just amazing.
  13. Was Ozzie Smith really that much better than, say, Omar Vizquel? The Wizard of Oz could be the worst hitter in the HOF. Of course, he's not in it for his hitting, so it's hard to say. Perez, though, for sure. Sutter, Winfield arguable.
  14. "Hey Hey" is a Brickhouse trademark. Not associated with Buck in any way.
  15. I'm of the belief that managers can do little to make a team win, but a lot to make a team lose. A manager's responsibility is to put the team he's given in the best position to win. Some managers feel the need to affect the game every chance they have, and that's where mistakes are made more often. Managers in this vein are Cox, Tony LaRussa, Lou Piniella and Dusty Baker, just to name a few. In these cases, the flaws the manager do have are greatly amplified, because they try to directly affect the game so often, they will make more overall mistakes. Does that make them bad managers? Well, if a manager does nothing but make the lineup cards and call the pitching changes, it's the players that really affect the game most. I'm not sure that makes someone a good manager if they don't affect the game a whole lot, but at least they don't screw things up that way. As for the Braves 14 years of success, I think you have to credit Schuerholz at least as much as Cox for that.
  16. Oddly enough, also a 3-2 game in extras, and also tied in the bottom of the ninth on a HR. Dibble actually intentionally walked Doug Dascenzo with runners on 1st and 3rd with one out...
  17. ESPN Article: The life of a manager can be a whirlwind ESPN detailing the managers that are under fire one minute, and safe the next. I did find this bit amusing: Interesting that the Brewers were a disappointing 7 games back 16 games ago, and then they ran off a 12-4 string that brought them to within...7 1/2 games. The Cubs are 13-3 in their last 16. Also interesting, last year after 64 games the Brewers were 34-30 and had a 5.5 game lead in the division. This year after 64 games, the Brewers were 33-31 and trailed by 7.5 in the division. So, really, the Brewers season hasn't been a whole lot different. Everybody else just got a lot better.
  18. Argh...Gameday has every video highlight EXCEPT the Edmonds HR call. WTF?
  19. Cubs now lead the Astros by 10 games...and the Astros are only a game under .500.
  20. Justin Hicks doesn't par a single hole on the back 9, finishing with bogey-birdie-birdie-birdie-bogey-bogey-birdie-birdie-birdie to grab the early clubhouse lead at 3 under.
  21. So, when was the last time the Cubs were better than 43-24 after 67 games? They just matched 1969. I know they were 47-20 after 67 in 1906 (they proceeded to finish the year a ridiculous 69-16...so these Cubs are NOT going to catch them.), and 46-19 in 1918. Anything since then?
  22. my heart is broken I can only imagine the outrage in the Chicago area if Wood had a week like that.
  23. Billy Wagner's had a rough week. That's his third straight multi-run blown lead today. This time the Mets lost, too.
  24. Someone should mention to Lou that Ronny has reverse splits.
  25. Nicely done by Cotts to strike out Jones and McCann with a runner in scoring position. Now it's up to the Cubs offense to do something.
