  1. Cmon, Rich, have enough left to get through Utley/Howard/Burrell here with no damage.
  2. It's (VERY SLIGHTLY) concerning to see a playoff caliber offense getting to our top pitchers. But its early and its a completely different situation than the playoffs. Really, a HBP, walk, and grounder through the hole is "getting to" Harden? The standards are really high, then.
  3. Oh, of course. But, for now, it's a little amusing.
  4. Thanks to their latest run of wins this month, they're getting into an elite company. The current difference between their run differential and the next best team in the league is 105. The last time the difference between one team and the rest of the league was that large in the NL was 1986, when the Mets had a +205 differential and the Astros had a +85 differential for a difference of 120 runs.
  5. I have a sinking feeling Illinois comes out too slowly in this game, and doesn't get it going until too late. Mizzou 37, Illinois 21.
  6. Aren't all 3 losses to weak teams NL Central teams? (Cubs 2003 vs. Braves, Astros 2005 vs. Cards, Cards 2006 vs. Mets)
  7. I could give it a go with a spot start. Haven't done one since 2005. I'm the Mark Prior of game thread starters.
  8. I think for some reason Lou didn't want Marshall to face Burrell. He wasn't even up in the pen until after the Ruiz hit, and the Hamels/Rollins ABs were so quick, he wouldn't have been ready to go until the Utley AB. At that point, it would appear Lou decided he'd stick with Demp through Burrell, and then go to Marshall if the inning was still going after that.
  9. MLB.com has the Fontenot HR and the Ramirez HR.
  10. Scarily enough, they're on pace to match it.
  11. Things that are silly: - The Cubs are now on pace for 102 wins, which would be their most since 1910. This would require a 18-10 finish. - A .500 finish of 14-14 would put the Cubs at 98-64 on the year. The only way they'd miss the playoffs at that pace would be if the Brewers finished at least 22-7, and either the Cardinals finished 25-3 or both the Phillies and Mets finished at least 26-2 and 25-3, respectively. - The Cubs have scored the most runs in the NL (8 behind the Rangers for most in MLB), and given up the fewest runs in the NL (21 behind the Rays for fewest in MLB). They currently sport a 193 run differential, which is 105 runs better than the next closest NL team (the Phillies). - The Cubs are still somehow 3 games under their Pythagorean (according to ESPN). If all teams played to their Pythagorean records, the Cubs would lead the entire NL by 10 games, and their division by 12.5.
  12. The Cubs have a 6.5 game lead in the division for the first time since 1984, when they got as high as 9.5.
  13. Actually they're the furthest over .500 since 1945.
  14. Anybody got a clip of Ron having a coronary? (radio call of GS)
  15. And with the win today, the Cubs are at least .500 against every team in the NL this year. 2-2 vs. the Phillies, 3-3 vs. the Nationals, above .500 against everybody else.
  16. Lee and Ramirez both hit it pretty well, but to the wrong part of the park. This game is probably why they have that saying, "Can't win them all".
  17. Lee hit that well, but too close to Victorino.
  18. Is that the Karate Kid song? How about Eye of the Tiger? Yeah, that's the Karate Kid song.
  19. Excites the few ND delusional fans who actually believe him (less than 15% I'd say) and continually inflames the ND hate from everybody else. The 85% of the remainder of ND fans are caught in the middle left wondering how he slipped down the hill so quickly. He's the worst analyst at ESPN, but he does seem to get a lot of people awfully fired up over his comments (not saying that you're doing that), so that's probably why he has a job. It's sad too-ESPN execs probably knowingly continue to sell him the lie that he's there because he provides quality analysis even though everybody knows that he just continues to embarrass himself. the Rush Limbaugh of ESPN's college football coverage? I like to think of him more of the Abe Simpson of ESPN college football coverage.
  20. I'd probably rate the Twins below the White Sox. However, the White Sox probably have the worst pitching of any team that would make the playoffs.
  21. How about "You're the best" from Joe Esposito?
  22. Err, that's actually the reverse of what you said. If they had taken a look at the stats, they'd know better than when they use the "eye test".
  23. The Phillies are the only team in the NL the Cubs are under .500 against this year. Fix that, Cubs. Of course, the only team in the NL the Cubs can't finish over .500 against is the Nationals. And yes, I know that is sad.
  24. I'd have to say that a team 6 games clear of the entire league and 10 games clear of every team but one is pretty dominant in the league. Maybe that's just me, though. And I hate to say it, but the pitching matchup in this game favors the Cubs. Dempster has been that good.
  25. You wouldn't have considered the Cards eliminated at 8.5 back with 29 to go? Yeah, what was really the best case scenario for the Cubs was sweeping the Pirates, which pushed everyone further back with less time remaining.
