  1. There were like 60 relievers in the NL who held opponents to a lower OPS against and only 6 who had more blown saves. He was a completely middling middle reliever this year. Probably 4th best guy on a not so good Cubs bullpen. He was not "darn good" this year and he wasn't last year either. 1) Blown saves? Really? 2) 60 relievers with a better OPS against means he's a pretty darned good middle reliever. 3) Give me a measure by which the Cubs bullpen wasn't very good, besides walks. For having an overall pitching staff that was a disaster, the bullpen overall was excellent. Even if he were the 4th best guy in that pen (after Marshall, any argument for Samardzija, Wood, Marmol or Russell is about equally valid), that's pretty darn good for a 4th best guy in a pen.
  2. He had a 117 ERA+ and 10+ K/9 with the fourth highest K/BB of his career. I'd say he was pretty darn good, especially for his cost. According to BP's #s, Pena was 10th among 1B at WAR with 2.26, between Todd Helton and Ryan Howard. Not great, but he had a decent season.
  3. Either way. I like the idea of setting up a confidence pool rather than a WAR-based points pool. That way you could leave as many FA in there as you wanted, include the non-MLB players, and let people choose their top 20 confidence picks. It has to be weighted, though. Picking barmes to return to Houston just isn't as impressive as getting Fielder right. Says you! No, I get that the point is to try to get the marquee FA right, and that it should count for more if you did. I also want to see a viable way to get the Japanese players available, and to keep the list from getting too unwieldy.
  4. The obvious response is that ESPN must not consider the Red Sox aren't a marquee franchise.
  5. Confidence pool, from 25 for most confidence to 1 for least confidence. Have common players selectable (if you have a database of players available from which to select), with several "type your own other options" at the bottom. Granted, in that scenario, the vast majority (if not all) of entries will have very similar top 5's, but especially this year it's pretty wide open.

  7. The way this offseason is going, I half expect the Cubs to get Mackanin (manager), Maddux (PC), Sveum (HC) and Martinez (BC).
  8. This means WAR. They could be a tiebreaker.
  9. Epstein-Quade meeting transcript: TE: Hi, Mike. I'm interested in learning everything you have to offer about the team and how you ran things last year. MQ: Sounds good, Eppy. TE: Actually...I left something out in the hall. I'll be right back. MQ: Sure thing, Eppy. I'll just wait here. *7 hours later* MQ: Huh, I guess he's not coming back. *leaves*
  10. An alternative (if you felt like coding it) would be to set up the form to accept a minimum of 25 and leave the 50 in there, so the contest results could somehow be scaled depending how many guesses you made.
  11. Just completed it (with the last 15 all Yankees). I'd say 25, but include Darvish and Chen as well. EDIT: Also, don't include CC, since he already signed. Unless you want that to be your new captcha. Form invalidated if user chooses anything but Yankees for CC.
  12. I wonder if hiring Maddux would influence Wilson's decision for next season.
  13. 12% Nice, improving both the K% and the BB/K ratio are encouraging.
  14. Just out of curiosity, what was Vitters's K% this year?
  15. I probably saw every at bat he ever had before his first retirement. My opinion of him was extremely high at the time but has done nothing but go downhill since. My opinion of him as a player is that he's still my most favorite Cub ever. I don't want that to ever change, so I don't really want him near the Cubs management staff. However, he's not even on the long list of candidates, let alone the short list, so maybe we can talk more now about who will be the manager.
  16. do people really have issue with sandberg not diving for baseballs during his playing career? i'm not calling you out specifically, but this isn't the first time i've heard those types of comments from people here. Part of what kept his fielding percentage so high during his playing days was a complete inability (or unwillingness) to range for difficult balls.
  17. I'm exaggerating a bit, but I never particularly liked him once I was old enough not to just love him for being a Cub. He was like Ryan Theriot in how he thought way too much of himself, especially on defense because of his overrated fielding percentage. His HOF speech really rubbed me the wrong way. I enjoyed the speech honestly. What didn't you like, the "playing the game with right way" part? Attacked Sosa just for the hell of it.
  18. Sandberg positives: - Respected as a player, which is probably good for his ability to command respect from his players. - Hasn't been reported to destroy pitching staffs yet. - His minor league teams win regularly, which is of minimal value. Sandberg negatives: - Penchant for getting tossed in minor league games doesn't speak well of his ability to handle himself with composure in a major league setting. - His articles online suggest a very small-ball approach, which goes against everything the current FO supports. - Never been a major league coach, not even a bench coach. Major leagues is a different beast from the minors, as previous Cub hires can attest to (like Quade!)
  19. It was Quade's poor handling of the pitching staff that really soured me on him.
  20. Sandberg has zero major league coaching experience, which means he's less qualified than anyone else they would hire.
  21. I'd feel worse for you if it weren't 103 hours since you won your last World Series.
  22. I couldn't even bear to listen to CTL last night after they had Hoyer on. The big media outlets around here are complete neanderthals when it comes to baseball analysis.
  23. Should the Cubs un-retire Ryno's number and take the flag down if he gets the Cardinal job? ;) For beating the Cards during his playing career and destroying the franchise with a managerial career? I'd build him a statue.
  24. Maybe Brenly can become the manager, so Marmol can throw 100 pitches in a 2 day span.
  25. Everything's comin up Cubs this offseason.
