    The Tigers defeated the Guardians to move to 60-61, which in the AL is the 6 seed in the playoffs, just 2.5 games out of a bye in the playoffs.

    Cubs now closer to the 1 seed than the 5 seed, 4.5 games behind the Brewers and 6 games ahead of Philly and Arizona. Also just 1.5 games behind the Dodgers and 2.5 behind the Braves.

    Dan Vogelbach for Mike Montgomery in terms of actual trades that kind of line up, though Montgomery wasn't ever as dominant as Zeferjahn has been of late.

    So you're now complaining about such a very specific situation that it's only happened once in 2 years in a game the Cubs still won? And this is somehow a major need? No, it's not a need to plan for a 3rd catcher in the case of the ghost runner in the 11th inning of a tie game so a runner can score on that exact type of hit.

    Cubs starters across the board have been the 24th best unit in baseball since July 1. Which is admittedly better than 30th, which is what they were before that, but I think it's fair to think they could do better.

    I mean, half the players on that list are hurt and not pitching right now, so it's hard to call the bullpen set for next year.

    Pete with 2 runs scored today to get to 80 on the season, 2nd in baseball behind James Wood, who has already somehow scored 100 runs.

    The Jays may be 54-61, but they are in the AL, which puts them just 3 games out of a playoff spot.

    Since dropping 2 of 3 to the Rockies in June to fall to 32-46 and the worst record in baseball, the Red Sox have gone 32-5 to vault into playoff contention, and might just be the best team in the AL.

    My only real disappointment of the trade deadline was that the entire AL West didn't sell. Got very close to that scenario, but the Astros stood pat.

    I forgot about Harvey, but he's also in that mix at the back end of the bullpen if you can't get Brown or Steele back.

    As for what I'd do, I'd rotate starts between the following 6 players if Cabrera comes back strong: Boyd, Gausman, Holmes, Imanaga, Peterson, Cabrera. Keep Rea around for mop up long-relief duty, put Assad in the minors since he has options. For the last 6 in the pen, you keep Webb and Rollison because they've been nails, Palencia could be the closer or setup guy, and Zeferjahn is a good complement to Palencia, and that should effectively cover the last 3 innings of any game in the postseason. Past that, if Brown and Steele are healthy and can be effective, that's the last 2 spots. If not, keep them on the 60-day DL and figure out your best 2 out of Maton, Thornton, Ferguson, Civale, Milner, Miller and Thielbar.

    Just before the trade weekend, Cubs FO said Brown was playing catch as a start of rehab in their Arizona facility and has been asymptomatic so far.

    Cubs haven't lost to the Dodgers at Wrigley since April of 2024.

    Ok, now with Gausman and Holmes joining this weekend, and Cabrera, Palencia, Brown, Milner, and possibly Maton, Steele and Shelby Miller becoming available shortly, the Cubs need to find their best 13 pitching options out of this group of 22(!) options (not including Wicks, Kelly or Garrett who are in the minors) : Boyd Gausman Holmes Imanaga Peterson Cabrera Assad Rea Palencia Webb Zeferjahn Rollison Webb Thornton Thielbar Ferguson Civale Steele Brown Miller Milner Maton

    Cubs didn't score first in any of the 3 games.

    Also, having a lot of double plays isn't a bad offensive sign so much as a sign you get a lot of guys on base.

    Sure, but if Pages makes a great play it's okay to call it a great play. PCA being historically good doesn't mean nobody else should get any praise for a good play.
