  1. #18: Kris Bryant Tags on a Pop Fly, Scores Because He's Kris Bryant Why on the list? - In a 1-1 game in the 4th, runs were assumed to be at a premium against Kluber in game 7, so when Russell hit a shallow, 120-foot pop fly to Davis, Bryant tagged and slid under the tag safely. Hard to tell if Davis didn't assume Bryant was going to go, or if Bryant just assumed he'd beat the throw because Davis didn't have much of an arm, but a smart play by Bryant to get the Cubs the lead.
  2. It's hard to overstate how good Pulisic, Dempsey and Altidore were last night. Honduras played most of the night with 5 defenders and 3 defensive mids and the 3 of them just carved them up whenever they tried to press high. Villafana-Nagbe on the left side was also really solid. Honduras attacked the right side all night and got probably more good chances than they should have, but losing Lletget early plus a less than 100% Cameron was a factor there. Gonzalez was fine, some terrible passing decisions though. Bradley sat back mostly after the first half. Some passing issues in the first half, he was better in the second, but there wasn't much good possession in the midfield (though being 6-0, playing keepaway in the back isn't really a bad play). Howard was solid for the 1-2 tough saves he had to make, and Brooks was great until he had to go off for what is hopefully just some dehydration.
  3. #19: Chapman and Defense Shut Down Indians in Game 5 Why on the list? - The crowd was tense, in a one run game in the 7th, down in the series 3-1. Maddon went to Chapman in the 7th, not about to let the Indians tie the game without using his best reliever. And Chapman was great in this game, with a bit of defensive help. He got through 2 2/3 innings, and that tying run never crossed the plate (thanks partially to that stop by Contreras in the 7th). Of course, there was some additional defensive help earlier in the game, particularly from Heyward on this anti-Bartman grab against the wall: There were also some popup adventures between Ross and Rizzo earlier in the game:
  4. Updated the #20 post with actual videos and comment and better title.
  5. I'll do it right later today, just thought it'd be funny for a bit.
  6. #20: Schwarber Not As Slow As He Lets On Why on the list? - It was more than amazing that Schwarber could even hit in this series. But here, Schwarber shows the knee is healthier than the Indians assume, beating out an infield hit, then taking second without a throw when Kluber doesn't bother to throw over. He finished the series with as many stolen bases as Lindor.
  7. One of Gonzaga, Xavier, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Baylor, or Florida will be in the NCAA title game.
  8. #21: Arrieta Goes God-Mode in Game 2 Why on the list? - After a disappointing Game 1 start to finish, Arrieta came out in game 2 and shut down the Indians into the 6th, by which time the Cubs had the game well in hand. Considering how much trouble the Cubs had scoring early in the series, Arrieta arguably saved the series for the Cubs here.
  9. The Mariners were fleeced by a shadow. A shadow with the face of Theo Epstein. I'm just relieved that the Cubs no longer have to worry about trading Rizzo to make room for Vogelbach.
  10. n the plus side, 21 highlights remain, 11 days to opening day and 22 is the last highlight for a game that the Cubs did not win.
  11. MLB has started chopping up their Youtube highlights (literally, like in the last few days, these highlights were full highlights before) and linking in the video to the full highlight on MLB.com. If I could embed those videos, that would be neat.
  12. #22: Rizzo, Fowler Show that Kluber and Miller Aren't Invincible Why on the list? - Kluber and Miller shut down the Cubs in game 1. Miller shut down the Cubs in game 4, and hadn't allowed a run all postseason. However, in game 4, the Cubs broke through first as Fowler lead off with a double, and then Rizzo followed two batters later with a single. Cub pitching this day was not good, but the Indians brought in Miller anyway and Fowler solved him with a HR. In reality, the game wasn't as lopsided as the score indicated, as two balls hit with identical lift and velocity had some different results. Kipnis's was helped by the wind over the fence, and Rizzo's was pushed back by the wind for a double. http://m.mlb.com/video/v1210148883/?game_pk=487634
  13. #23: A Game of Inches Why on the list? - Safe or out? Really close, and unfortunate that it went against the Cubs, because the very next pitch: Another solid defensive play, this time by Soler, but if the call goes the other way, they're out of the inning, and that's the only run that scored. Instead, the Cubs needed yet another solid defensive play to get out of it: Maybe a makeup call, but not quite equal, considering the run scored. Amazing that this game, with the wind blowing out 20 MPH, there were no real hard hit balls on either side, with the Cubs' best chance at scoring being thanks solely to the wind: Just a weird game all around kept close by another solid Hendricks outing (4 1/3 IP, no runs), and some fantastic relief pitching in tight spots (particularly Grimm, who came in with the bases loaded and 1 out to induce a DP, and he did, making it the only DP he induced all season), and some fantastic defense, yet again.
  14. I wonder how long the Netherlands waits to use Jansen. EDIT: Not long, apparently.
  15. Sweet 16 by conference (predicted by seed): B1G - 3 (1) SEC - 3 (2) Pac 12 - 3 (3) Big 12 - 3 (3) Big East - 2 (2) WCC - 1 (1) ACC - 1 (4)
  16. With the Kings' loss, the Hawks have clinched a playoff spot. They are also suddenly just a point off the league lead.
  17. The weirdest thing about the timing of the hiring for me is that technically Illinois is still playing next week. Curious if Underwood gets involved at all for the remainder of this season.
  18. Oklahoma State did have the best offense in the nation this year, so that'll be fun to watch at least.
  19. Off the top of my head, because he didn't reach base, most of the time by strikeout. EDIT: Mostly right, 0 for 5 with a K, the K coming from Lester. He did reach on Javy's error in the 1st, but it was with 2 outs and Hendricks had already picked him off in Game 3, so he stayed home. Yeah, his CS in game 5 was from the last hit he had in the series, and he stayed home in games 6 and 7 because Arrieta immediately struck out Napoli, and he wanted no part of getting away from first in game 7 after Hendricks picked him off in game 3.
  20. So, pop quiz time, anyone have an idea why Lindor didn't run on the Cubs in game 7?
  21. #24: Cubs Get Lindor Out on Basepaths...Repeatedly Why on the list? - At the beginning of the series, Lindor said the Indians would do what the Dodgers couldn't do effectively, run all over Cubs pitchers. Now to be fair, he did successfully steal one base in the series, but I hardly consider 1 for 4 a good use of aggressive running. On top of all that, Chapman beat him to first base in game 6:
  22. Fabian out, Zusi in for qualifiers. Concerned about the backs.
  23. YES YOU ARE RIGHT IT COULD BE A TOP 25 MOMENT IN THE SEASON.
  24. #25: Schwarber Returns to the Lineup Why on the list? - At the end of the NLCS, there was some surprising news to fans and the team: Kyle Schwarber had been medically cleared to resume hitting. The Cubs quickly sent him to the AFL where he got some swings in against live pitching for 3 game, managing one hit. Then, not only was he put on the roster, he was put into the starting lineup for Game 1 against Corey Kluber. Most were concerned about how he'd do against real pitching and if he'd just look silly against Kluber and Miller after not having really been able to do anything for 6 months. However, Schwarber nearly hit one out in the 4th against Kluber: Later in the game, Miller relieved Kluber, and the Cubs left him in against Miller as well in the 7th: I mean, that's pretty much the most amazing story of the year, tearing an ACL during the season, and coming back during the season to play in the World Series and be successful, hitting .412 in the series with a .917 OPS.
