  1. I probably would have gone for 3 with Gould looking so good and in the dome. But if they get 7, I won't complain.
  2. JAXX! Welcome.
  3. I think this could be the year that Manny goes. The Red Sox are going to finish about 7th best in the AL with him. This is the first time they have finished that low. Maybe they think it's time to go in another direction. Their window is closing anyway with a bunch of players over 35 and a handful of others leaving via freeagency. I don't think they are gonna completely go young, but I fully believe they will cut salary and let a bunch of their young guys play. The Angels are the most likely destination. They have to get a big OF bat and have to give up one of their big prospects if they are going to compete next season. The Dodgers will also be in the running, be interested what they do with my favorite offseason target, Drew, if they get Manny. I don't see the Cubs interested. Houston, I could see.
  4. I've decided unless I am wowed by an offer, I have 6 definites. Santana, Sizemore (can't even be wowed for him), Holliday, Kinsler, Morneau and Crawford. Napoli is very likely, as is Weaver. Barring trades, the last 2 spots are gonna come down to Shealy (unless he doesn't get 10 ABs this last week), Teahan, Jenks, Saunders, McCarthy, and Duke. IF anyone has an open spot for an exempt player, I am very willing to make a 2 for 1 trade. I'll take on points too.
  5. First time I read that I missed "one of". It's gonna be hard for him to ever reach Lawrence Taylor in my book. But I think he can end up in the Derrick Thomas class, and probably a notch below Derrick Brooks at the OLB position. There are some pretty good MLBs that I don't think he will catch either, Ray Lewis, Singletary and others. And I was one of the people that thought Merriman was severely overrated last year. He was not a pro-bowler to me, but definitely showed enough flashes to warrant it. Now it would be a crime if he's not there each of the next 10 years. Still, he's the 2nd best OLB on his own team! Shaun Phillips on the other side is a star!
  6. His 20+ errors are going to be a big help with a rotation that issues walks to anyone with a pulse. The only problem with Soriano in LF is it displaces Murton, which sucks. I'd rather trade Jones and stick Murton in RF. At least he doesn't spike throws into the grass instead of hitting the cutoff man. Obviously most people would. How likely do you think it is that the Cubs trade Jones though? Realistically, Soriano straight up replaces Murton in LF. End result, the Cubs 2007 team has more power, gets on base less, and scores enough runs to be around average instead of horrible.
  7. His defense is pretty bad. He was pretty comfortably the worst defensive 2B in baseball his last 2 years there. Still, his offense is enough to overcome that pretty easily.
  8. There may be doubts about him playing CF, but there aren't any doubts about his ability to play 2B.....he's terrible. Considering the fact that he did okay in LF, I might think his defense in CF can't be much worse than his defense at 2B. I agree. how is his defense in LF? I think he can play CF because he has the tools and judging the ball in CF is slightly easier than LF in my experience. I guess the question becomes twofold: 1. where will his defense cost the cubs fewer runs and 2. what are the alternatives at each position. I see some good alternatives at 2b but very few at CF. I hated LF. CF was much easier, unless the ball was hit right at you.
  9. The reason why people want Soriano to play 2B is because that's the best fit on this team. Soriano has only ever played 2 positions in the majors (minor league SS, but that ain't happenin'), 2B and LF. The Cubs have Matt Murton in LF. The Cubs have Cedeno/Theriot at 2B. Soriano would be an upgrade to both, but would be much more of an upgrade at 2B with Murton also in the lineup. Soriano also has the distinction of being the player most easily acquired to make the Cubs better while not completely throwing someone out of position. Carlos Lee could be had but then you put he or Murton in RF with Jones moving to CF. That's below average defense at all 3 OF spots. Players like Wells and Andruw Jones would be great, but are harder to acquire. Operating under the assumption that Soriano can't play CF, the best place for him to play and help the Cubs is 2B.
  10. 6 HRs in 70 ABs. That's amazing for someone who bats 2 or 3 times every 5 days. That's a 50 HR pace over a 600 AB season. Put him in RF when he doesn't start. The man is a beast!
  11. I think the Bears could very easily lose this game. I don't think the Vikings are anything better than an average team, but I think this could go either way. My gut says that under Grossman the Bears have scored at least 16 points in every game since his rookie year, scoring at least 21 in all but his 2 including his 1st game back last year when the Bears could have scored at the end against Atlanta. I don't think this year's version of the Vikings is capable of scoring the 3 or 4 times it would take to beat the Bears the way they've played under Grossman. I agree the defense hasn't played that well yet, but they haven't been broken. I don't think the Vikings offense is that much better than the Packers, other than the fact Johnson won't make stupid passes like Favre. I think Grossman struggles a bit this week. Completion % won't stay at 70%. I think he's closer to 50 this week, but the running game gets going. The Bears win 20-14. Defense and special teams make a big difference.
  12. I think it would take Marshall and Pie.....or if the Cubs weren't willing to trade Felix. Marshall, Cedeno, and Marmol.
  13. That's not likely to happen. I'm hoping he makes all his starts. Throws 190 innings and has an ERA around 4.....give or take .25 runs.
  14. I for one didn't say that. I never truely believed in the dominance of the Bears last year. If they did go to the Super Bowl, it was based on a weak NFC. Like was mentioned, the Bears had no expectations that year. And nobody was claiming they were as good then as they are claiming Minnesota is now. The Bears had a team that was only capable of winning close low scoring games. This year, they had to improve to be taken seriously. They have. And they are.
  15. Careful or you will hear from the stats junkies who will find some statistic to downplay his offense. Mature.
  16. Wells is extremely cheap next year for what he provides. The Cubs could add him AND spend big money on 2B or SP. Of course, if you sign a guy like Soriano or Schmidt, you can't really re-up Wells after this season with Ramirez, Lee, and Zambrano still on the payroll.
  17. He will give up his share of HRs when he hangs a curve or misses badly with a fastball, but yeah, if just 9 batters out of 19 make contact against Hill on a regular basis..... you can guarantee 1/3 if them won't take the ball deep.
  18. Yeah, he can look across the field on Sunday and see what the Bears need him to be. Brad Johnson isn't great but he won't screw up and kill his team either. If Grossman can make a couple of plays and the running game can be at least somewhat effective, the Bears should win a lot of games. It's a good model for success and consistency in the NFL, really. I don't agree with the first 2 statements. Grossman shouldn't and doesn't need to be like Brad Johnson. Bad teams or not, Grossman in his career has shown that he's not one of the "don't make mistakes" guys. He's a playmaker. He has a big arm and he doesn't work well in a "safe" conservative offensive scheme. And with the defense he has, he can afford to take chances. Griese as the QB would be the model for a team that focuses on the QB not screwing up.
  19. Getting Castillo is a good choice if we can answer the lack of slugging somewhere else. If we trade for A. Jones, then signing Castillo makes a lot of sense. If we bring back Pierre, getting Castillo would likely not be a good move. We're ranked 11 out of 16 in SLG (10th in HR) and dead last in OBP in the NL. I don't think slugging is the most pressing problem. It's still obviously a problem. 11th of 16 isn't good. And Castillo would do nothing to help it.
  20. I'm rooting against my non-exempt keepers and rookies. I need Shealy to get hurt and fall short of 200 ABs, heck, he might be there already. Saunders didn't get hurt and made his 10th start recently. It's hard to root against Morneau wtih what he is doing this season.
  21. where's the snoring icon?
  22. I was hoping the Cubs would put use him out of the pen like 5 times next week.
