Since July 11th, he has a 3.86 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. His walk rate has greatly improved to just 5 in his last 21 innings. But he is starting to give up hits. He had won 6 straight starts, but since the Brewers have lost 3 of his last 4 starts.
Assuming they are just doing whatever they can to not waste money on him next year (ie. trading him for nothing but the ability to clear his contract) that may be the best course of action. However, three consecutive seasons of being left off playoff rosters is going to add to the difficulty in moving him this offseason, and the desperation for pitching by contenders is much higher in July than in November. I think it will be much easier to move him now, and therefore, if they find anybody willing to take his contract, they should. You know, I actually thought about the playoff roster thing and was going to post a comment about it. A token spot on the playoff roster wouldn't be a bad idea to help his trade value if it gets to that point. The Cubs will probably use the 4 other starters besides him and the only pen arms used will probably be the late inning guys (Wood, Marmol, Shark, Gaudin) and whoever is the LOOGY (Marshall, Eyre, Cotts). That leaves 2 token P spots for Marquis and Howry.
At this point, Cubs should probably hang onto Marquis. Try to get him thru this year with continued league average numbers and 200+ IP and trade him in the offseason.
I'm guessing Lou wanted to pitch him today, then avoid using him tomorrow, in order to have him ready for Harden's start. Why would you guess that? You have no more reason to guess that than I do to guess that all other pitchers in the pen have sore shoulders. If anything, Marshall has been the one piggybacking Harden.
Yeah, save Jeff for tomorrow. He probably isn't going to be able to do back-to-backs yet. So, you just lost one of your top 3 relievers for tomorrow. Throw Eyre in the game.
Yeah, that's not true. Zambrano, Webb, Halladay, Sabathia, and Haren are better. And if you're using the "if healthy" prerequisite, Hamels, Lackey, Carmona, Beckett, Kazmir, Cain, Lincecum, Sheets, and Harden are probably all better too.
I believe Justin tried that angle, and it didn't work out for him.. but I don't know what you'd have offered with Felix. Well, I offered a pitcher who has more points than Felix, and it was declined, because he wasn't a true stud and I had a pretty good bat in the deal also. Then he accepts a deal for Oswalt, and a lesser (albeit keeper) bat. Again, I think the deal I offered was better. But it doesn't matter what I think. I don't have to accept or decline my offer. I don't see any reason to get upset over the deal either. As I don't think anyone here is in the business of helping somebody else win the league, even if it is just to spite the 3-time champ.....especially someone in the hunt himself.
I thought the deal I offered for Braun was a better deal to help our Fuzzy for this year. Though, admittedly, I was not giving up any exempt players like Gordon. I thought I had a good deal for King Felix too, which I was going to use to try to turn him into Braun.
Harden through 6, Shark takes it from there. Bam, lights out city. Seriosuly, Id be willing to bet on LF Soriano CF Pie RF Fuku with Reed Johnson as the 4th. 2009 will probably be Pies last chance. He'll start the season, probably platooning with Johnson, and it it doesnt work out, they find someone else through a trade. Ironically his first also.
Don't forget Draconian Empire, who has won 6 of 7, with his only loss coming to me in the AS break week. He's 1 game out of the playoff race and is the hottest team in the division right now.
Yeah, sucks that Samardzija is probably not available tonight. And I'm not sure how much Gaudin could give the Cubs today. If Lilly struggles at all, the hook should be quick. Especially, since Zambrano figures to rest the pen tomorrow night. Can't fall down more than 2 to CC and the Brewers. Sean Marshall should be able to go a couple innings today, but after that it gets iffy in the pen. Even if Lilly gets thru 5 and Marshall 2, you are still looking at Howry/Eyre/Cotts for the 8th or a 2 IP save for Marmol. Lilly needs to go 6 or 7 with no more than 3 ERs for the Cubs to have a chance today. Sabathia will walk his share of people, but I don't expect the Cubs to pound him. 2 or 3 runs in 6-7 IP is probably best case.
This game has all the makings.....of Lilly crapping the bed. He really needs to be on, especially early. Ryan Braun is the guy you can't let beat you. He's red hot, has killed LHPs (literally last year), and has a LH behind him in Fielder. I do think the Cubs will get to Sabathia. He has thrown 3 straight CGs, though his pitch counts haven't been horrible. Theriot and Fukudome need to make CC work and do damage on the basepaths. I expect any offensive production the Cubs get to come from Johnson, Soto, and Soriano, but the rest of the guys need to run that pitch count up.
Yeah, that's exactly what that means. Carpenter was my higher priority. Figured I'd rather have more into the starter and I could pass on the reliever if needed.
