  1. I project Szczur to be a really good defensive CF. Everyone knows he has the speed and athletic ability to cover some ground. I've also heard pretty good things about his instincts. His arm is better than many think. He was the backup QB at Villanova. I think his upside offensively is 2010 Brett Gardner with considerably more power (Gardner has almost none).
  2. Oh Brett. Just struck out on a pitch in the dirt with the bases loaded. 0-3 with 2Ks.
  3. 5 pitch inning for Iowa, including Vitters and Jackson getting out on back-to-back 1st pitches.
  4. Vitters ripped a double into the LCF gap, but then Jackson struck out again, swinging. Rizzo also 0-1 with a groundout.
  5. As with seemingly every Cubs prospect not named Rizzo there's some real holes in his numbers. Low batting average, 6 CS in his 22 SB attempts, a little old for the league, only recently got his ISO above .100...Hopefully like Shark the fact that he's an athlete who never focused on baseball has some legs. Low batting average is a stupid gripe for someone getting on base 36% of the time. He now has 17 steals in 23 attempts, which is about good enough at 74%. 22 is not old for High A. And he's never going to be a power hitter so his power numbers aren't going to jump out at anyone ever. So, yeah you're pretty much off base on all your points.
  6. Matt Szczur is quietly heating up. 12 for 32 (.375) with 4 XBHs in his last 8+ games
  7. Can't we just throw to first base after every single and have LaHair knock them off the bag? Dunn would be the only guy he's have a problem with. Steve Stone said it was a clean play. Steve Stone is also a colossal prick, so that makes sense. True story - he once sold a stereo to a female friend of mine in Arizona. At the conclusion of the transaction he solicited her for sex and when she declined he refused to sell her the stereo. Greatest story EVER!
  8. Damnit, Konerko's on my fantasy team that already has Longoria, Desmond Jennings, Carl Crawford, and Huston Street on the DL.
  9. I think WGN has ESPN beat. They have like 1 non-WGN show commercial per break.
  10. You forgot the words "of the head" in that sentence.
  11. Where's Chris Johnson? Unless you are just a physical freak like Peterson or have enormous big play potential, you're lumped together for me. Peterson, McCoy, and Johnson are top 3 for me because of that. Foster and Rice may be a notch better than Forte, but I don't think it's extremely clear.....though Rice runs circles around both Foster and Forte as a receiver, and those guys are really good receivers. I would put MJD with Foster/Rice. Forte inability to get short yards and goal line TDs really hurt him against this group of RBs IMO. And that's completely his fault? The Bears have been the worst short yardage team for a couple years now. Houston has been the best, FWIW. Plus, being a good short yardage runner is like being a good bunter. It's a worthless ability to have. Barry Sanders wasn't a good short yardage runner, yet was arguably the best ever. OJ wasn't good in short yardage. Forte not being able to convert short yardage and close TDs is A) on the OL. and B) is just more reason to keep the ball in the best player's hands (Cutler).

  13. Yes, don't want him to ruin the Cubs postseason aspirations. No, I mean I'd hate to have all this attention about his retirement and then go out and get booed after walking a couple guys and just generally looking bad. I knew what you meant. Was just messing with you.

  16. I remember coming home from taking a final and watching the 20K game. After the game I went downstairs to the computer lab in my building to get online and read about the game. I ran into a guy in the lab that lived across the hall from me all school year long but I had never said more than "Sup?" with the headnod until that day. He saw I was on the ESPN Cubs website and proceeded to basically scream, "My God did you see that game! The Cubs better never get rid of that kid. That's the best game I've ever seen!" Me and that guy became lifelong friends that day. Actually reminds me I need to call him, been a while since I've talked to him.
  17. It does feel bittersweet. I am glad that he will retire a Cub though. A perfect ending would be to come in and pitch a scoreless 8th with 3 k's. I'd bet he wants to retire after the game to get one last chance to pitch in front of the Wrigley faithful. If that happens I sincerely hope we gets a standing ovation. The question is not IF he will get a standing ovation. The question is how long it will last.
  18. The line's weakness is made up primarily of its inability to protect the QB, more than it's inability to run block. Forte hasn't exactly been Barry Sanders making holes where they are not. Agreed. But Foster has almost been running thru Emmitt Smith holes at times.
  19. The was the best game ever pitched in the history of baseball. Never have seen anything like that movement in my life. Sad to see him go.
  20. Eh. The only things that Foster really does better than Forte is get into the endzone and handling more of a workload (not necessarily a good thing for a RB). Last 2 years, Foster has averaged 4.694 yards per carry behind one of the best OLs in the league. Forte has averaged 4.695 behind one of the worst OLs in the league. Forte also protects the ball better. Foster does have superior numbers as a receiver the last 2 years, but I still think Forte's a better receiver as the Bears have the ability to get him the ball in more variety of ways.
  21. They are pretty much the exact same size too. I actually think (as those numbers show) that Rizzo has more natural power. Votto's much more patient though, the most patient in the game at this point. Rizzo though has put the ball in play at a better rate than Votto did in the minors (20% vs. 22%). The comparison isn't that bad. It's tough to make because you don't want to project Rizzo to be one of the top 5 players in the game, but the potential is there.
  22. I was hoping for Vitters to either start walking more or start homering more. He really needs to really do one or the other really well, really soon. Nice that he did both today. Now back-to-back games with walks, and 3 of his 8 on the season have come in the last week.
  23. It's pretty obvious that either a sophomore or a freshman is going to leave the program altogether, if it is because of a transfer or because one of the freshman didn't become academically ineligible. That will reset the scholarship numbers. Creek also probably won't get a 5th year, and then they might try to sign Anya as an oversign in preparation for Zeller leaving. If all those happened, then IU would be fine in all three years again. If they don't get Anya and Zeller leaves, then they probably give the scholarship to Creek for that year and recruit somebody else in the 2014 class. I would be pretty surprised if Zeller is the only IU player the next two years to leave early for the NBA. Oladipo is on track to graduate in three years -- as Hulls and Elston just did -- and, if his development arc continues to be even remotely constant, he'll be an early-entry candidate next year. There are multiple players in the incoming class with the potential be two-and-done quality. Or, if that fails, they could just rescind a scholarship offer of a committed player and force a a current player off basketball scholarship and onto a football scholarship. Stupid question. But do you have to play football to be on a football scholarship? Who qualifies on the current or future teams?
  24. Couldn't have said it better myself. Those were my exact thoughts, not only in the final game...but pretty much all year. Webb gets heat for his feet being slow, but it's really his hands that get him in trouble. Whether it's grabbing or lack of punch. Louis was OK last year, but he looked like a guard playing tackle. Spencer and Edwin had their issues but were OK. Garza was largely overrated because center is such an unnoticeable position. People still thought Kreutz was a respectable player, so Garza being better than that was no accomplishment. If I was creating an OL of the current Bears with the best 5 right now, I'd put: CWilliams, EWilliams, Spencer, Louis, Carimi If I was creating an OL based on potential to be the best group at each position: Webb, C Williams, EWilliams, Louis, Carimi....with James Brown having a real shot at challenging Louis at RG if he shows well in camp.
