  1. I love Cutler and all but I don't think using Jimmy Claussen as a barometer of success is a good idea. What about Todd Collins, Jason Campbell, and Caleb Hanie?
  2. Yeah, I don't want to face Liriano at all. Burnett scares me too....BUT NOT JAKE'S DONG!
  3. I think he'll be in the wildcard game, but IDK about NLDS. If it's the Cards, they'll be no LH starters to deal with. There's a couple of LH relievers, but you'd have Jackson and potentially Baez and Denorfia who may all be better options in a pinch hit situation, and are all much better defenders.
  4. Why is that in our best interests It's not. I don't want to lose but the argument is (at least as I understand it) if the Pirates and Cardinals tie they will likely burn their best starters going for the division. But I'm on the "we need to play the Pirates in a 1 game vs 5 game" bandwagon. Plus I'm not able to cheer against my teams even if it's in their best interests. I've tried but I can't. I understand the logic. But getting swept by a team you are going to see in the playoffs in 2 weeks isn't ideal in any scenario. If the Cards end the season 1 game better than the Pirates, the whole "why didn't we just throw that Sunday night game?" won't cross my mind. The Cubs will still have one of the best 3 pitchers on the planet Earth throwing in that game.
  5. I don't get the thinking that the Pirates can't see too much of Arrieta on Sept 27 because of a potential Oct 7th game, but they just saw him for 117 pitches on Sept 16th. Edit: Oh and BEFORE this game started, Arrieta has more IP vs. the Pirates than any other team on the schedule. FWIW, he also has the 3rd lowest ERA against them of any teams he has multiple starts against (0.93). He allowed 0 runs to the Mets and Giants in 2 games each.
  6. Why is that in our best interests It's not.
  7. They have a better team so yes, the one game gives us a better chance than letting their superior lineup show up over several games. I don't agree with that at all. Pirates are at best marginally better offensively (18 more runs scored, 1 point higher OPS). They lost one of their best hitters. The Cubs offense includes many hitters who did not even start the year with the team. Their pitching depth is definitely better, which is what concerns me in the playoffs.
  8. As I said a couple weeks ago, I'd rather face the Pirates in a 1-game elimination with Arrieta on the mound vs. Cole, than having to face Liriano, Burnett, and Cole a combined 5 times in a series. The Cubs have never hit any of the 3, and I'd think the Pirates would have every non-Arrieta pitching advantage. Let the Cards win the division. I'm all for a tie after 162 though.
  9. Pirates fans going to be all cocky, that the Cubs only scored 1 against their WC game starter. But they'll feel stupid when Arrieta allows 0.
  10. First guy, dong. Second guy, dong. Repeat as necessary.
  11. I don't see why not. 96 pitches, his spot in order isn't due up for awhile, relatively big game. Eh, not really a big game.
  12. Is it me or has Coghlan not hit much recently?
  13. How do you blame Pace for the QB situation being the same? Also, those Emery guys playing "key roles" on a horrible team isn't much of a defense of Emery. I don't personally. But it's pretty clear tons of Bears fans do. And Pace clearly at least seriously thought about trading Cutler and trading up for Mariota, whether that really got anywhere or not, it was out there and if keeping Cutler goes bad (and it will because they probably won't be very good this or next year) then many will put that on Pace for not fixing that.
  14. As bad as a perception as people have of Emery's draft picks, only 2 from the last 2 drafts are not currently on the team (Khaseem Greene and Jordan Mills), and Mills was probably one of the last couple of cuts. Obviously, you can argue that it's only been 1 draft and Pace hasn't had a chance, but it's not like he jettisoned all of Emery's picks. And guys like Bostic, McClellin, Wilson, Vereen, and Sutton (because of perceived scheme fit before taking the field) could have all been cut. Yet several of those guys are starting and playing key roles, over guys who Pace brought in like White (injury), McDonald (woman beater), Foster (cut), and Porter (hurt). But yeah, Pace is getting a hard time even though it's early because of the McDonald signing, the 7th overall pick being a non-factor this year, and fairly or not, he's getting it for not getting rid of Cutler. I've said recently that my biggest issue is that I don't think this team is in a better place than it was when Pace too over. Granted, it hasn't been that long, but the QB situation is still the same. Still no pass rush. Still shaky back end of the defense. And then you throw in the fact that Forte and Jeffery could walk, Bennett could force his way out of town, and this team could potentially be worse in 2016.
  15. The Penguins/Steelers fans thing is a legit reason to hate the Pirates. But part of me wants them to win it (if the Cubs don't) because they were so bad for so long. But more of me doesn't want another team to end a long history of losing before the Cubs do.
  16. I honestly hope Maddon plays the lineup like he has all year in the playoffs. I don't see any reason to get locked into the same 8 guys every game just because it's the playoffs. Don't do anything different. Granted, he won't have a 40 man roster to play with, but I see no reason not to get guys like Baez, LaStella, Soler, and Jackson in the lineup when the matchup dictates (or frankly if Joe has a hunch) if they are not considered "starters".
  17. How is Schwarber not a lock? Hell, Castro and LaStella are probably pretty close to locks too. Jackson, Wood and Cahill are probably next
  18. 2 Hendricks, 2 Wada, 1 Lester, 1 Hammel, 1 Haren, no Jake. I've gotten screwed too but at least they're 6-1 in those 7 games. 2 Hendricks, 2 Hammel..
  19. I think the bigger issue is him throwing that many pitches when he doesn't have to AKA 4-run lead in the 9th. But yeah, in the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal. And I do think the stress of the situation matters. Arrieta hasn't really had to throw 120 pitches in 1-run games while working out of multiple jams. I'm fine with the usage, just wish it didn't happen in games that seem to be in the bag.
