  1. i find it curious that people are so worried about cotts while howry's 7.11 era never gets mentioned and many people want a guy with a 6.52 era to be the 5th starter.
  2. How many options does Cotts have left? 2 according to this page: http://mvn.com/mlb-cubs/2007/02/15/cubs-2007-spring-training-roster-contracts-and-options/ lots of good cubs info there btw.
  3. " As one official from an American League team put it, the Cubs are "continuing to try to foist Jacque Jones off on someone."" sounds like they want floyd in rf full time. probably a good thing if they can pull it off. http://www.newsday.com/sports/printedition/ny-spken185135105mar18,0,4633661.column?coll=ny-sports-print
  4. similar to prior, the cubs are not really counting on wood so anything from him is a plus. if lou is set on a 6 man pen, even if wood is hurt again they still have a pen of ohman, cotts, eyre, cherry, howry & dempster. btw, speaking of injuries, any word on wuertz?
  5. OT MG, originally from aurora? we've lived here since 1996. i am originally from the south side of chicago. Gotcha. Grew up there and went to West High. Had to ask. no problem. we love living in aurora. the only drawback is being so far from wrigley field.

  7. dont know if this has been brought up before but i heard a caller on the score compare prior to jason bere. 2 good years and then out. i certainly hope prior doesnt turn into the cubs version of bere.
  8. so does coats make the 25 man along with cherry? if so, does what do they do with pagan?
  9. at least it's in the dictionary: http://www.bartleby.com/61/84/I0238400.html
  10. i dont think it's too late for him yet. if he can just be decent on defense his hitting would help make up for his defensive problems ala barrett.
  11. BA had Payne at #36 in their top 100 college prospects. would that put him in 2nd round range for the cubs? Past the sandwich pick for sure, since it seems like the HS class is stronger. cool. if the cubs do take brackman as their #1 hopefully they would take a guy like payne #2.
  12. This quote makes it sound like Guzman was lights out dominant yesterday. Granted, I didn't see the game, but what is so spectacular about giving up five hits in three innings (with one K)? He wasn't lights our dominant, but right now he's our best option. i would have to say that miller is the front runner at this point. unless miller gets rocked his next few starts, i think he will be the #5 to start the season. if they give it to guzman right off the bat, hendry would trade miller and have to go to the minors (or cotts/prior) if guzman isnt able to handle the majors yet. with miller the #5, they always will have guzman at iowa in case miller tanks.

  14. he's a left handed hitter too. his body type sounds similar to brain giles at 5'11" 192 lbs. http://ramblinwreck.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/payne_danny00.html
  15. You're right. He's a crappy baseball player who happens to be in the Major Leagues (much like Neifi Perez, Rey Rnez, and many others before them). And there's a reason why those men are playing "slow pitch" softball. Fixed. Mods, can we put a stop to this? If I have to stop using these (#@#!) we should have to stop insulting players for the sole purpose of annoying supports of said players. Thank you. i wouldnt worry about it if i were you. alot of posters on this board are under the delusion that they would make better gm's than many current ML gm's. that goes right along with comparing a guy like izturis with some beer leauge softball guys who couldnt get a hit off a good HS pitcher.
  16. jones is worth more than lieber who is a shadow of his former self. along with cotts, the cubs will have guys like guzman, marshall & mateo in AAA in case of an injury in the rotation. if the cubs do trade jones this year either to give pie a shot in cf or floyd in rf, i see jones going for some good young prospects.
  17. i think in 2008 we will see epat starting at 2b & pie in cf with jones traded, soriano in rf & murton in LF.
  18. no thanks. he would cost way too much in both prospects and $ imo.
  19. Maybe, but I'd rather have Wood at his best in the 7th or 8th with runners on than in the 9th with nobody on. thats what eyre and howry and wuertz are for. Sure, they can do it. But Wood, at his best, is better than any of them. The notion that your best reliever should be your closer is a myth, or a misconception, at best. yet it means nothing if wood holds them in the 8th and dempster loses it in the 9th That's true of any inning with any pitcher, not just the 9th and the closer. yes but it means nothing if the pitcher in the 9th cant hold a lead, kinda like Dempster demspter didnt seem to have a problem holding the lead in 2005 when he went 33/35 in saves with an era around 2. Jason Marquis went 15-7 with a 3.71 ERA in 2004 Cesar Izturis batted .288 with a OBP of .330 in 2004 the point is, the freshest sample of data says Dempster blew 9 saves in 2006 compared to 2 in 2005 good thing players are a little more than "sample data". dempster has proven he has the stuff to close and there is no reason he cant do so effectively in 2007. the same goes for marquis & izturis having good years. they have the ability if they can stay healthy.

  21. if miller is not in the rotation i dont see there being a spot for him on this team. to ship wuretz to the minors just because he has options would be a major mistake. if Piniella doesnt over use him ala baker, imo he will be one of the better arms in the pen for the cubs this year.
  22. If not jones then who? Theriot/DeRosa - RF DeRosa/Theriot - 2B But, like I said, it's the first spring game. So... Piniella has said that he's not going to use derosa in the OF.
  23. as a former powerlifter, i would say that much of the ease of weight gain depends on a persons frame type more so than height. a 6'3" guy with a medium or large frame should be able to put on 20 lbs of muscle in 6 months, especially at such a relatively young age. i would question if he did it at 35 or 40 years old but at 20 it's not unheard of.
  24. Paying a high salary does not necessarily mean the player is "bigger salaried." You can't justify paying Marquis 3/21 because he is now making $7 million a year. Would the Neifi Perez contract have been better had he paid more? By the way, there was no competition on that one either. But kudos to JH for getting out of that one in year 1. and also for getting a good prospect from the tigers for him. i believe robinson was their top catching prospect.
