  1. since you can see into the future so well can i have the winning powerball #'s? as for dempster, i seem to recall that when he is not in a save situation his era is over 5 so it would be a disaster to have him pitch as anything but the closer.
  2. Chad Cordero is mediocre? Please explain. oh, right, sorry. 1.71 WHIP is worse than mediocre Thats pretty picky. He has pitched 22 innings (under poor circumstances). His whip over the past 2 years is about .5 better then Demp (Demps been around 1.5). Cordero is so much better then Dempster it isnt comparable. You people who call him mediocre have not been watching him throw. He has all star calibre stuff, Dempster doesnt. I type this as Demp serves up to fat fastballs, with zero location. Cordero hits spots very well. actually other than the one game blow up this year, dempster has been very good in save situations saving 11 out of 12 games. cordero is 7 out of 11 in saves. the set up guys have been the problem so far this year not the closer. imo just giving up guzman alone would be way overpaying for cordero.
  3. Awesome. actually i think there are several guys in ther minors who are ready to help the team right now. look at guys like kroeger, fox, epat, pie, hoffpauir, k hill, soto, fontenot, cherry, pignatello and rapada along with guzman and marmol who are already on the 25 man. the major issue is going to be what to do with the big contract guys like izturis, jones, eyre, howry, derosa & blanco.
  4. 2 hr's for kroeger tonight. maybe he should be called up if they do decide to trade murton. along with fox, kroeger's success is making the soriano signing that much worse imo.
  5. what are they going to do with fox, kroeger & craig? all three are tearing up aa pitching so far this year but do they have any kind of future with the cubs? too bad fox didnt work out as a catcher because he would be their #2 position prospect behind pie if he were even an average defensive catcher. if he can handle the of and murton doesnt pan out i would think that he and kroeger are the next in line for the job.
  6. You would think he could, but that's not even a guarantee, given the fact that he hasn't started much in several years now and was really bad when he did. I have to think the Cubs are thinking they did such a great job transforming Marquis from a crappy starter to a servicable one that it'll be just as easy with Dempster. Of course, Dempster actually has a worse history than Marquis with starting and has the whole "stretching out his arm" issue to work with. Plus, the shine may be coming off the Marquis experiment with his 7+ ERA in the past week and unimpressive peripherals for the season as a whole. if you are looking for guarantee's then you are rooting for the wrong sport.
  7. He's walked 3 in the majors. And do people not remember Marmol walked 59 guys in 77 innings for the Cubs last year? None of these guys is a lock to do any better. there is no such thing as a "lock to do any better" in baseball. all they can do is give the best talent a chance to succeed. at this point there are several players in the minors who can come up and contribute more than some of the veterens in the pen. marmol probably needs more seasoning in iowa in the pen but cherry, rapada and pignatello are ready imo.
  8. Problem is, he's been so bad that you just cannot pitch him in close games. How can you have a guy on the team who can't play except in games that become a joke? With a competitive team, that's wasting a roster spot that could be used to win close games. With a bad team (i.e., this one), it's wasting a spot that could be used to test minor leaguers for next year. That's fine and all, but a release just forces the Cubs to pay him to play for somebody else, and will probably cause them to go out and spend on another inconsistent reliever. The key word here is inconsistent. It's not like Eyre is Neifi Perez where you can count on him to suck day in and day out. They shouldn't have signed him to that deal, but unless you can trade him away, you are probably better off trying to get him to work through the struggles. Nobody in the minors is an obvious candidate to do better. The Cubs are stuck. Hendry made the mess and they really can only try and right the ship, or cut bait at the deadline. Releasing Eyre solves nothing right now aside from appeasing an angry fan base. It would be a move based on emotion rather than one where there's an obvious improvement to the team. if used properly i think that either pignatello or rapada would do a much better job than eyre.
  9. what makes it even worse is that aardsma is the sox's best reliever so far this year. it would have been nice to have aardsma to take the closers role right now.
  10. He was last night. The Mets sure weren't hitting the curve at all, but he was leaving his fastball up and over the plate, and they were jumping on it. He has more confidence in his fastball now, but I'd like to see him mixing in more curves and also some changes. And, he needs to locate his fastball better than he did last night. Does he really throw a change? I mean, well enough to call it an actual pitch that he has in his arsenal? Most people I talk to feel he's a 2-pitch guy, and that's likely to be his biggest issue. he does have a pretty good change when he can get it over the plate. he threw a few in the 1st inning last night. very glad i didnt stay up to watch the debacle btw. time for rich to adjust to the hitters now that they seem to have adjusted to him.
  11. I'm not satisfied with the current MI depth, even if I do like the three guys you mention. They should never stop looking for a guy who can be an everyday impact middle infielder, especially at shortstop, where they have the least depth. I think a team with the three guys you mention handling 2B and utility roles, with a legit SS could be something special. imo theriot is a legit ss. even if they do trade jones for rodriguez , i dont see any reason not to use a middle if of theriot, fontenot & epat.
  12. lets hope so. i would love to see fontenot starting at 2b & theriot at ss for an extendend period.
  13. rapada has sure settled down after a horrendous start. i would guess that he and pignatello are the heir apparents of eyre & ohman (perhaps as early as this season).
  14. the cubs dont need any more middle infield guys imo. they already have theriot & fontenot for ss & 2b and epat at iowa. it is obvious that the cubs are a better team when theriot is in the lineup and i think that the same will be said about fontenot.
  15. if he does get taken before the cubs pick, i would assume that the other team would go with price leaving porcelo & vitters. in that case do the cubs go with the pitcher or hitter? if price is still available do the cubs select him?
  16. If Cedeno gets back on track and if Patterson continues to develop and if Theriot shows he can handle regular duty all year then I think you can discuss trading DeRosa. But that's not happening right now. perhaps it's not happening right now but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be. i think that jones, blanco, izturis, derosa, miller and eyre should all be gone by the all star break.
  17. so who's going to stick at ss & 2b? if cedeno gets back on track in iowa, they have theriot, cedeno, fontenot & epat. time to trade derosa imo.
  18. looks like i picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
  19. are you referring to barretts ability to gain weight?
  20. will the cubs try to resign him or can they risk going with a soto/hill platoon? soto & hill are having good seasons so far at iowa and i would assume they are both better defensively than barrett. either way i hope they can get trade blanco this year.
  21. Actually from what I've read, what's kept Fontenot out of the bigleauges is his inability to be a viable utility player -- not enough defensive flexibility (or plain old defensive ability either). For a long time the conventional wisdom was that he'll either make it as an everyday player because he hits enough to put up with a subpar glove, or not make it at all. Now FWIW, he's getting the chance to dispel that notion by playing a bunch at 3B. Not sure how well that's going though. actually he's been playing at ss several games too.
  22. in spite of what dan bernstein might say, you cannot swallow your own tongue. bashing out the guy's teeth was unnecessary. just lay the guy on his side to keep his airway open and save him a pricey dental bill. sounds like schneider, being uninformed, overreacted. When a person is having a seizure, you cannot lay them on their side. I've never heard of someone choking on their tongue, so I cannot say whether it is possible or not, but I do know it is highly unsafe and somewhat unlikely to try to turn a person having a seizure on their side. Unless they're vomiting there shouldn't be a problem keeping their airway open. actually sulleymoon is correct. look under "Persistent Myth" here: http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/aboutus/pressroom/communicating.cfm
  23. Hype will take you a long way agreed. not only is gallagher ahead of him but so are holliman, guzman, marmol & marshall imo.
  24. yet another hr for fontenot tonight. he's RED HOT at the plate.
