  1. Perhaps, but they have to do that AND leave wiggle room for a mid-season move or two. The math isn't impossible, but I think it becomes extremely difficult.
  2. Assuming the Cubs remain under the luxury tax this season, and with huge money coming off the books after 2026, there would be no good baseball reason to NOT allow a spike in payroll next season. That is the exact scenario where a team should be willing to blow past the tax with minimal repercussions. If the Ricketts family can afford it, that is.
  3. With the potential to be very good if something happens like Ben Brown staying healthy and developing into a reliable late innings reliever.
  4. 5:10am start time in Japan isn't terrible. I don't remember what time it was the last time the Cubs played in Tokyo, but I remember it being much earlier than that (although I was in college, so anything would have seemed earlier when I was used to sleeping until noon).
  5. "We need to clear payroll. Give us your best prospect and more!"
  6. Robertson worries me a bit. I like him and I know he has been very good the past 3 seasons, but he will be 40 in April. When is the bottom going to fall out? But at this stage, I'm not sure there are really any better options on a 1 year deal.
  7. And then extend them rather than admit mistakes.
  8. Yeah, even if the Bulls were good, I'm not sure I could sit and watch a full NBA game anymore. I check scores and regularly see teams putting up 40-50 points in a quarter. The players may be incredibly talented, but the style of play just isn't something I'm interested in watching.
  9. I don't love giving Pressly a full NTC, but if that's what it took to get the deal done, that's fine. I suppose in the scenario where he is pitching well and the Cubs are inexplicably out of the race by the deadline, he would probably be willing to waive the NTC to go to a contender anyway.
  10. I'd rather have Hodge as closer with Pressly as setup man, but that probably won't happen. I'm ok with it being the other way around.
  11. But clean books.
  12. Let's run it back for Hard Knocks next year. Two years in a row with the same team, let's see how much different things can be with a real coach!
  13. I have to admit that I watched almost all of the Cubs Convention coverage over the weekend. One of my takeaways was that I was really impressed by how Matt Shaw came across in interviews and on panels. Not that it says anything about his future performance on the field, but he was very well spoken and just seemed really comfortable for a 23 year old second year pro. He came across as a likeable guy and someone who will be easy to root for. Let's hope his on field numbers match the off field presence.
  14. Nothing concrete, but on one of the panels a kid asked a question about who would start the season at 2B if Nico wasn't ready. I think it was Carter who responded with something like "Have you asked Nico if he's going to miss Opening Day", implying that Nico is progressing under the assumption that he will be ready to go.
  15. With that being the case, it's still odd they had to fast track an interview with Eddie George to clear the way for the signing. I'm sure they didn't really expect the Lions to lose their first game, but they could have been better prepared for that possibility. That's really nitpicking though and, to their credit, at least they had a contingency plan with George and did what they needed to do.
  16. If I recall correctly, the first and last could be considered legitimate fouls (although the first foul was called about 5 seconds after it occurred by the ref who was furthest from the play). In between, there was one where the opposing player stepped and KJ's foot and fell down, one where KJ fell down and the opponent fell on him, and another one where he didn't make contact with anyone. It was as if the referees went into the game deciding that they wanted to take out the best player on the court. On top of that, there was a play late in the game where it appeared the officials gave a Michigan St. player a timeout when he was on the ground without possession of the ball, which then led to a Technical Foul on Brad Underwood and two made free throws by Michigan St. Those were the most egregious offenses, but it was a very one-sided game from the officiating crew. No surprise really, with Tom Izzo on the other end. But this was one of the worst refereed games I have seen in a long time and it's a shame that Big 10 refs frequently decide to insert themselves into the storyline of what could have otherwise been a great game. I'm curious whether Underwood called them out at all after the game, or if he took the high road to avoid being fined.
  17. Any hard salary cap would almost certainly be paired with a substantial salary floor. So yes, it might hurt the guys at the absolute top end being able to sign the mega $700M deals, but the player population as a whole could see little change on the aggregate or even more money in their pockets.
  18. I agree with this, but that still doesn't make it right.
  19. I honestly can't decide between wanting the Dodgers to crash and burn or wanting them to completely dominate MLB for the next two seasons going into the expiring collective bargaining agreement. Short term, watching them lose would be fun, but long term, I think I'll be rooting for Dodgers domination that results in major changes to force some level of payroll parity.
  20. What.... the.... horsefeathers. How anyone can think this is good for baseball is beyond me.
  21. Eddie George interviewing tomorrow? I guess that satisfies the Rooney rule and the Bears will be free to go full steam after Johnson, if that's what they want.
