  1. That is true. I suppose it comes down to how Tucker performs this year. If he is good, but not great, and the Cubs make the playoffs, then MAYBE they can justify letting him move on and spending that money elsewhere (not what I would do, but that's how they will spin it). But if he hits like prime Kyle Tucker and carries the offense into the playoffs, it will be a really bad look to let him get away.
  2. The national guys, agents, union representation, etc. are really piling on Ricketts and the Cubs for their spending and the larger shell game. Hopefully they keep the pressure on, especially now that we know how much it bothers Ricketts.. The Score has been playing various different clips this afternoon, some explicitly calling the Cubs out and others that describe exactly what the Cubs are doing without mentioning them by name. That talk will likely die down if the Cubs have a good season and make the playoffs, but if they disappoint again and fail to make the playoffs... Look out.
  3. Seeing Sandberg walk into the Cubs Spring Training facility, glove in hand, warms my heart a bit.
  4. Some strong stuff from Rosenthal today https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6139283/2025/02/16/red-sox-alex-bregman-draft-cubs-payroll?source=user-shared-article
  5. This post did not age well...
  6. See you in 2026.
  7. "I don't think the Cubs ownership has done a very good job of explaining what the situation is" Gross.
  8. I agree that it sucks and the Cubs should be spending more, but there would be at least 15 other teams' GM's who would love to be able to operate under the Ricketts constraints.
  9. Remember the good old days when we considered the lower luxury tax limit to be approximately equal to the Cubs budget? Turns out their budget is below that, and Jed can only approach the tax threshold with "special permission" from the Ricketts family. This whole situation rings so hollow, with Jed repeatedly thanking the Ricketts family for opening up the pocketbooks enough to make an offer that was very unlikely to ever be accepted. I hate that this ownership group has made me feel this way about the team, but it is infuriating to watch them continue to play this mid market horsefeathers with one of the most valuable teams in one of the largest cities in the country.
  10. He isn't likeable or unlikeable. He just comes across like generic corporate stooge #18.
  11. With future payroll obligations being what they are, there is no reason not to extend him at whatever cost is necesssary. whether that be now or after the season.
  12. Exploiting the system to squeeze in contracts at a lower luxury tax figure isn't a competitive advantage? It certainly is for the Dodgers. I'm not saying it's the answer to all problems, but taking the option off the table entirely shows how serious the Cubs really are about winning.
  13. Also of note, the Cubs aren't willing to offer deferred money. Awesome. We have ownership so obsessed with "clean books" that they are unwilling to exploit a loophole for a competitive advantage.
  14. This is almost certainly me being a meatbally Cubs fan (and a bit of a Turner-hater), but Rizzo is 5 years younger than Turner. Why not bring him in for near league minimum to be the backup 1B? I get that it's not ideal for both 1B to hit left handed, but both Busch and Rizzo can hold their own against left handed pitchers. And if there are any injuries in the outfield, Rizzo can slide into the DH spot with Suzuki going back to the field. I know Rizzo is nowhere near the player he used to be, but I wouldn't be opposed to having him as a cheap part timer if the roster can support that.
  15. Yeah, JD seems much more unlikely to get a consistent back-up. I'm sure we'll still get the Dempster, Sutcliffe, Girardi, et al rotation.
  16. Who is buying tickets? I have been to a couple post-Jordan Bulls games and they are boring as hell.
  17. The Bulls had tradeable assets, yet chose not to trade them. I don't get it. Someone please tell me what the plan is for building a team that can compete near the top of the conference. They are stuck in NBA hell indefinitely and do nothing to improve their long term outlook. Is there any doubt they are going to pay Josh Giddey big money in the offseason (like Patrick Williams before him), then he is going to fail to live up to the deal and the cycle continues?
  18. Absolutely. Hopefully they are grooming him to eventually assume the full time gig. I have no idea what Boog's intentions are, but it doesn't feel like he's a guy that will stick around forever. Could he have already told them he's going to be moving on at some point and this is Marquee getting a jump start on filling that role? Who knows!
  19. This is awesome! Good riddance to the college of broadcasters that rotated through filling in for Boog. https://chicago.suntimes.com/sports-media/2025/02/05/alex-cohen-will-be-full-time-backup-to-cubs-tv-voice-jon-sciambi-on-marquee-sports-network
  20. It's not a bad deal. It may end up being a steal. Maybe Lonzo felt like he owed it to them? But would they be willing to trade him next year? If not, it just reinforces how directionless this team is
  21. This organization... So stupid.
  22. I would choose 3 and it isn't particularly close. But I would be happy with any of those options.
  23. Has there been any reasoning provided for Bregman's lack of walks last season? The rest of his numbers appear to be mostly in line with previous seasons. Strikeouts were consistent with where they have always been, but his walks dropped significantly. If he had walked somewhere closer to his historical average, he would have been right up closer to a 5 WAR player.
  24. The idea has been floated that maybe the Cubs would sign Bregman and then trade Nico at some point to stay under the tax. I just don't know that a Bregman for Nico swap makes any sense. I think a 28 year old Nico versus a 31 year old Bregman is basically a wash, except that Bregman is going to be a lot more expensive. I'm cool with Nico AND Bregman, but if it's Nico OR Bregman, then I would choose Nico.
  25. What's done is done, but that would make Jed's luxury tax mishap in 2024 look really bad.
