  1. What's with all the double and triple posts lately?
  2. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/gammons/story?id=2239213 Anonymous sources. Bah. What do they know? Usually nothing. I really doubt that the offer Hendry made was for more than $10,000,000 a year. Considering the contracts we've seen so far I bet he gets at least 5\60 but we shall see... gfd. you're trying to make me cry. 40M/4 is overpaying. I don't think Hendry would go for that. He doesn't seem to be inclined towards overpaying for the really expensive ones, just relievers and bench players.
  3. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/gammons/story?id=2239213 Anonymous sources. Bah. What do they know? Usually nothing. I really doubt that the offer Hendry made was for more than $10,000,000 a year.
  4. And they say Hendry doesn't have a strategy.
  5. Obvious arguments: For: The MLB has not only US players, but most of the best players from all over the world. Against: The entire world is not represented as far as cities go. Personally, I don't think the second argument is all that good, but the first seems to make sense. I don't think there is a better baseball league anywhere in the world.
  6. Sure, but that was only for one year. He'd spent plenty of time in the bullpen and put up similar numbers in some years and terrible numbers in other years. It could be that Farnsworth will find consistency as a closer, but considering his past history in the bullpen, I doubt it.
  7. I don't understand how anyone who thinks the Howry signing was bad can think that signing Farnsworth for $15,000,000 over three years is anything close to a good idea. Farnsworth has had good years and bad years, just like countless other relievers. He will probably have both good and bad years in the future. Paying $5 million for a relief pitcher, unless he is one of the few consistent relievers, is a terrible idea.
  8. I kind of wonder how close Corey will ever get to what he did back in 2003. I think Corey's chances of rebounding from a truely god-awful 2005 are much lower than Pierre's.
  9. The thing is, the Cubs didn't have to sign Eyre. They could have let the Yankees pay him $11,000,000 over 3 years if they liked. There are other ways to spend the money. If it was a choice between spending the money on Eyre or doing nothing with it for the next three years, I'd choose Eyre, but I think it is reasonable to assume that the Trib was going to spend the money. If they were spending it on something that would really help us a lot, I'd be celebrating. That said, I don't think these signings will crush our season. I expect both pitchers to be reasonably useful over the next three years, and it makes a few more of the young pitchers useful for trading purposes. Hopefully Hendry has something better in mind than giving them away for players to be named later.
  10. He's done that with relief pitching, but not all his acquisitions. Barrett and Ramirez weren't exactly at their peak when the Cubs acquired them. That said, relief pitching is probably the worst position to focus on when it comes to expensive free agents.
  11. :?: :-k What I mean is, it is possible that he will reject this offer and the Cubs will bid even higher for him, possibly giving him a completely absurd contract.
  12. That's actually worse than if he had signed. If he goes for more than $12,000,000 over three years, it would be ridiculous. Heck, he's already way overpriced.
  13. I definitely did not specify anyone. I've never read anything from you to the affect that Hendry is an axe murderer, but that wasn't really a joke. People have called for him to be killed. It is insane. As for everything else, criticism is fine, and I never said it wasn't. I would say also that none of us really know how Hendry does his job, but my point isn't that criticism of Hendry is wrong, just that some of it is absolutely outrageous, and partially brought on by the popularity that bashing Hendry has with a big chunk of the board.
  14. For serious fans, I'd say most definitely. People who put a big emotional investment into a team that seems to screw up over and over are likely to be pessimistic to an unreasonable extent.
  15. Hendry misses the big picture, and that bothers some of us more than others, and some of us are more intellectually honest than others. Signing middle relievers to long and expensive contracts makes no economic sense. You all know the arguments by now. It's not like the Cubs have unlimited payroll. He pays way more than minimum to players like Perez and Macias and Blanco. Hendry perceives a lack of available mediocre talent. In all his talk about depth he doesn't understand that great frontline talent is immeasurably more important. Yeah, Baker is awful. But when Hendry signs Macias and Perez, and lets Baker carry 12 pitchers, well he is an "enabler." Some poster has a great sig. "Jim Hendry: Overpaying for mediocrity since 2004." That sums it up very nicely. Give me a break. Yeah, I think that has a lot to do with it. A lot of people think that it makes them look smart to insult everyone in the organization. Hendry has messed up many times, but by the way people talk about about him you'd think he was an axe murderer, not the GM of a pathetically dissapointing baseball team.
  16. I predict that if Mark Cuban buys to the Cubs, he will a) get injured somehow, and b) become an idiot. As for how, my guess is that he'll be hit in the head by a line drive into foul territory. Two birds with one stone.
  17. It's kinda weird they don't have all the details worked out. I've never heard of a contract signing like that. How the heck can they sign a contract if they don't know what the terms of the deal are?
  18. Don't we have a place for this stuff, or did I imagine it? Any way, LOOGY means lefty one out guy, or something along those lines.
  19. Rotten season followed by Rotten offseason followed by Rotten season followed by Rotten postseason followed by Rotten offseason What do you expect? I'd expect a lot of criticism, but I don't think that the Cubs playing badly is an excuse for acting like a jerk towards other people. (Not at anyone in particular.)
  20. So why were you so upset that a lot of us didn't like this signing? I don't speak for him, but I'm kind of upset at the tone some people have been taking here. Without criticism this place would be boring and pointless, but I think things have really gotten a lot nastier here over the last few months.
  21. Ah, the things some regular posters can get away with... I think this one is getting put into my collection.
  22. Spending a large amount of money on relief pitchers (good but not great ones) is often not a good use of money. They're just so unpredictable. Eyre has had good years and bad years. Obviously, we'll have to hope his years with the Cubs are good ones. It won't destroy the team, but I'm still waiting for Hendry to do something that really improves the team. We're in for a long, moody, confrontational offseason from the look of things.
  23. How many more "Bruce/bat signal" comments can one message board take?
  24. Looking at his stats, I wouldn't say the Marlin's Gonzalez is any better. He has a lifetime line of 245/292/391. He can't even get an OBP of .300 consistently. That said, I kind of doubt that this is who Hendry ends up signing.
