  1. How many times did Walker leadoff for us this year? Exactly. So are you coming down on Hendry for bringing in the wrong guys, or coming down on Baker for using them "incorrectly"? Obviously Walker hasnt been used as a leadoff hitter because Dusty didnt find that as an option. But how exactly do we know if Walker is a good leadoff hitter for us if we never used him in that role? .294/.370/.505/.904, 15 2B, 12 HR, 30 RBI, 45 R leading off in 2004--228 ABs. Does the fact that a player has done well in one spot of the order in the past, especially based on a small sample size, really mean that he will do that well in that spot in the future? It seems to me like it shouldn't make that huge of a difference. Is there any evidence that it actually does mean anything? I'd like to see Walker come back next year, but not as the leadoff man. He should only be used as the leadoff man if the team cant get a half decent deal for a high OBP player. Walker is good, but considering his decent power, high batting average, and relatively low K totals, I think he'd be better suited for the 2nd spot. Not that it makes a gigantic difference, but that's the way I'd prefer it.
  2. Why the heck do people think Dopirak is ready to play in the majors? Isn't he still in A-ball? I don't think bringing him up to a level where he will be totally overmatched is a good idea. I don't think it is necessary to shut down every player for the rest of the year, but Baker should certainly give them plenty of rest.
  3. I'm not saying that a player should aim to ground out and move a runner over, but in situations with a runner on its a good idea to try to put the ball in play. You wouldn't want the batter to go out flailing but with a man on third and one out, try to put the ball in play if a hitter's pitch is thrown. Hopefully you get a hit, but if not you have a decent chance of moving the runner over. Of course, every situation is different. If the batter at the plate is a bad contact hitter, he should probably play to his strengths.
  4. What about sacrifice flies and sacrifice groundouts? There is more than one kind of productive out. Bunting is overused, but moving a batter home on a groundball is truly a productive out. What's wrong with that?
  5. He isn't that terrible. Most of the throws to the plate he's gotten recently have been pretty bad or just too late. Base stealers have a 74% success against him, which isn't good, but I don't think that matters that much. As far as the pitching goes, there's no way to prove that any of that is Barrett's fault, and I'm pretty sure the pitchers have been doing better with him catching. I'd like to see the stats on that. That said, his bat is solid, excellent for a catcher. That alone is enough for me to feel his being here is justified. If you got rid of him, who could you realistically bring in to play the position?
  6. C'mon Prior, I still believe in you. Show those Cards what you can do. Please?
  7. Does going for a productive out necessarily make the batter less likely to get a hit or a walk? I don't think there have been any conclusive studies done on this, and I have no idea how anyone would try to do one. One thing I am sure of is that I wouldn't complain if the Cubs had a few more productive outs with men on third and less than two outs.
  8. BA is not exactly indicative of a team that doesn't make contact. Neifi Perez makes a lot of contact (avoiding the strikeout) but he doesn't have a good BA. Most likely the A's have a low team BABIP meaning they make a lot of contact but more of them become outs than other teams with higher BA. Well, yes, they do put the ball into play, but generally when people talk about contact hitters, they mean hitters who have a high batting average, not necessarily those who literally make a lot of contact. Neifi puts the ball into play with the best of them, but he is definitely not known as one of the best contact hitters in the game. I may be wrong, but aren't batters supposed to have some control over their BABIP? If so, then the A's may be more than just unlucky. They might just put be putting a lot of weak grounders and pop-ups into play. Anybody know what their expected BABIP is?
  9. The A's haven't struck out much, but I wouldn't call them a team based on contact hitting. They have a team BA of .267, 10th in the AL. Did Olney say anything about why Beane thought that avoiding strikeouts was a good thing?
  10. And Jerome gets out of it. Finally, one of the replacements gets a quality start.
  11. I disagree. He's still young, and he's shown better stuff before. No one knows exactly how he'll turn out yet.
  12. What happened? I muted it in the last half inning.
  13. They don't really have any better programming on Saturday's. What would they cut it for? Another game? They wouldn't do something that stupid in the Chicago area, would they?
  14. What pictures of Wrigley? They broke in with a live feed of a very wet looking Wrigley during the Braves/Dbacks telecast Was it still raining heavily, or just really wet?
  15. Is this reverse psychology negativity or real negativity? It gets hard to tell which is which when the Cubs win.
  16. I like him too. Especially since the new Patient Barrett appeared after the ASB. Maybe that's been built up too much, I don't know the stats, but he certainly seems to have longer ABs I'd say it's fair to say that he's been more patient. He's definitely improved his walk rate from last year. He's also been a bit better overall. 2004: .287/.337/.489/.826 2005: .286/.352/.502/.854
  17. No, I'm pretty sure you have to have an AB for it to count.
