  1. Our offense is streaky, but I don't know why everyone thinks it is so unbelievably terrible. It is above average in the NL, and not the team's biggest problem. I'd say that our pitching, specifically the bullpen, should be a much bigger concern. Today's game is a good example of the team's pitching problems. Cubs pitching in close and late games is the 2nd best in the league. Offense is the problem, especially OBP. Lack of patience is the reason why they get shut down by crappy pitchers and bullpens very often. Does lack of patience also explain why they are 5th in the NL in runs? They do score quite often. The are probably streakier than most teams, but I think some people underestimate the offense. Do you not understand that very high batting average and slugging percentage can make up for somewhat below average OBP? The team is in 8th in the NL in ERA. It's not bad, but should be better for a playoff team.

  3. [insert sarcastic comment about how useful this thread is here.] Me too.
  4. That's a much more detailed version of something I daydreamed about earlier. Of course I've probably tried everything in my power to make Manny a Cub and so far nothing has worked yet. I'm sorry if I let you guys down. Don't despair just yet. We still got 15 hours to go. Keep the faith! At least for another 14:30 hours anyway. The Nomar deal wasn't announced to the public until a few hours after the deadline, right? So technically we have a few extra hours. It was announced about 2 minutes after the deadline. Where the heck was I?!

  6. I think this scenario has been mentioned before. I'm not sure Hendry would press his luck as far as the deal you suggested, even if Epstein was desperate. That said, for it to be a truly Sosa like deal, Manny would have to stink up the place when he started playing for the Cubs and Patterson would be an important role player for Boston in final months.
  7. The dead have risen before. Zombie transactions are quite common, especially when ESPN is the coroner.
  8. Will Carroll said that the Cubs and Twins are done making deals. Other than that there hasn't been a whole lot else new. Manny didn't start tonight, and there's rampant speculation to the reason for it, ranging from him not showing up at the ballpark, to a trade being consumated. So our big deadline trade was Jody Gerut? Yay, we're on the way to the Series now... Wait until Monday to say that. Lot's of people have said things that may or may not be true in regards to the trading deadline. This wouldn't be the first time that the media has been wrong about a trade.
  9. Marge Schott? Wasn't she the Nazi sympathizer? I don't know if I could be a fan of a team run by people like that. I definitely would not give any of my money to them.
  10. Maybe Manny is just throwing a fit. We can't really know for sure.
  11. Darn straight. The Cubs suck. My grandmother can play better when it matters than them, and she has to use crutches. They aren't worth the material their uniforms are made out of. Just because they are only a few games out of the wild card lead doesn't mean they aren't the absolute worst group of 25 people ever to play this sport, or any sport for that matter. They suck. You're right about Lee too, what a giant waste of oxygen. He's worse than Macias. Just because he leads the MLB in batting average and is tied for the league in home runs doesn't mean he's any good. I think the fact that he hasn't matched his incredible pace for the last couple of games shows conclusively that he should be benched for the rest of the season, maybe cut from the team. Yes, that was sarcasm. They frustrate me too, but I think you are taking it a little too far. They don't suck, and they don't deserve to lose.
  12. Gammons has said not to expect a trade there, so it looks pretty likely at this point.
  13. I think we've pretty much established that the offense in general has been on an extended cold streak. Check out Fred's stats a page or two back.
  14. YES! Cubs score with a man on third and less than two outs!
  15. It would be remarkably stupid. I doubt that the person who wrote that article knows much more abouyt what is going on than we do.
  16. You only refresh the page once a minute?
  17. Exchanging Walker for Soriano at 2B wouldn't really be much of an upgrde. It isn't worth giing up Walker and prospects to get Soriano at second.
  18. I think that if something happens, it'll probably be right at the deadline, again. Hendry has a flair for the dramatic when it comes to mid season trades. Also, it sounds like there are some groups that don't like the offers going around as is, but they may end up feeling the pressure at the last second and moving. Of course, I have no idea exactly what is going on, so I may be totally wrong. One more thing to consider. Last year, the trade was pulled off at the last second, and not reported until after the deadline. So that should extend everyone's agony for a few more hours.
  19. ?????????????????????????????????????????????
  20. It is official: Peter Gammons has said Manny will not be traded. Now we just need to wait and see who's involved.
  21. I think he is 33. I've heard that the contract is guaranteed until 2008 with options until 2010. I don't know anything else about it. We will definitely not get his peak years. He has been declining for a while.
  22. i'll be smiling from ear to ear for probably the whole week :D And people here will still be saying the Cubs offense sucks.
  23. Dunn: .245/.386/.570 28 HR 63 RBI Manny: .273/.368/.571 28 HR 92 RBI How so? Manny has the edge in every category except OBP. And they are tied in HR's. I will agree with the age and contract thing though. What you also have to keep in mind though, is these numbers (avg/obp/slg) are down from manny's career numbers. Dunns are right on par. One could say manny is havign a bad season or playing unhappy, and still outproducing dunn. One could also say that Manny is having an early decline. His BA and OBP have been steadily dropping in the last few years. Does anyone know how much longer his contract lasts?
