In my estimation the Cubs have failed to get the runner in from third with less than two out in their last 1,659,526,893,059,867,894,036,758,390,436,856,720,968,372,680,926,789,068,904,267,259,867,289,067,568,972,568,259,067,289,067 chances.
Actually, what Dusty would do would be more like: Hairston Walker Lee Burnitz Aramis Soriano Perez Barrett I don't know why he thinks Barrett should bat behind Perez, but he will continue to bat eighth until Dusty leaves. Looks about right to me, but when Nomar comes back where does he hit?? Walker Nomar Lee Burnitz Ramirez Soriano Hairston Barret ?? or maybe he just bats in the 7 hole until he gets his stroke back... either way our current lineup plus Soriano and Nomar looks pretty good to me. You think Dusty will let Nomar get the everyday job back from Neifi right away? I guess it depends a little on how his rehab goes, but I expect Nomar and Perez to platoon at SS for a while. Dusty has said something along the lines of everyone earning their starting spot while talking about Nomar. I know the exact quote is i somebody's sig, but I'm too lazy to look for it.
Has a GM ever announced that he is planning on acquiring or very close to trading for a partcular player? It seems like that would be really stupid. I don't expect Hendry, or any GM for that matter, to come right out on television and announce that they are trying hard to acquire a player. It is a bad idea if you want to keep any leverage during negotiations. If all of us somehow manage to survive until Sunday, we will see what does (or doesn't) happen.

How great would having Soriano in LF really be? He is a good power hitter, especially for a second baseman, but how much better is he than an average LF? He also has a pretty low OBP. I guess I'd do it as long as the Cubs didn't have to give up too much talent or take on too much money. Maybe Hendry could pry a reliever from them too.
Cubs lead by 22 runs this season. They also have a BA that is .018 above the D-backs and a SLG that is .038 above. The D-Backs have a slight (.002) advantage in OBP. I'd say the Cubs offense is better. You know what I don't get? We are ahead of the White Sox in OBP, SLG, and BA, but they have seriously outscored us. What's up with that? Podsednik. He has 51 SBs. We have 46 as a team. They do have speed, but though they have the most SB in the MLB, they also have the most CS. I don't think that can make up for the entire gap. The Sox scored 485 runs in 100 games. The Cubs scored 467 runs in 101 games and have a better BA, OBP, and SLG. I guess it's mostly luck.

I dont think their pitching has caused them to outscore us. The DH is also a helpful tool in that regard. I don't get that. The DH should help their overall offensive stats, but they are still lower than ours, and yet they score more.

I'm thinking its an insult. Basically saying that Hoops doesn't have any idea what he is talking about and just throws a bunch of names out there. Stop me if that isn't what you meant, guned. I was hoping that wasn't the case. Good thing that's entirely false. Indeed.

Apparently this was originally reported in Sports Illustrated. The source said it was hardly news and that the organization often can't tell in Manny is joking or not. I don't think this makes it likely that he will be traded. Also, I think there is already a Manny Ramirez thread, maybe a mod could merge these? And, of course, welcome to the board. :)
More runs and OBP are always good, but that won't necessarily fix the streakiness of the team. Besides, I think the offense has contributed a lot to the season. Like I said, the team is 5th in runs scored in the NL. The Cubs have won plenty of games on the strength of their sluggers, though they have lost on the streakiness of the bats. That 4.25 team ERA isn't doing the team any favors, though, especially since the staff should be able to do much better.
Cubs are 1st in SLG, 2nd in BA, and 9th in OBP, and 5th in runs in the NL. The offense isn't bad, it is streaky. Compare that with the pitching, which in 9th in runs allowed. We also could stand to take a few more walks. That is always true, but they are about average at getting on base, and clearly capable of scoring. I don't know if a higher OBP will fix the streakiness. To do that, they need to be a little more luck in key situations and execute when it is necessary.
