  1. Maybe people were confused between the reliever and the actor.
  2. It is pathetic that the organization may have based the choice of who to promote to the majors on who had "leadoff experience." Just bring up the best hitter at an available position, or let Murton take over LF. This might work out, but it is still stupid.
  3. The Phillies are just messing with us now.
  4. Oh no. The game is set up for Miller to hit the walkoff HR again...
  5. or say, Johan Santana. I think Santana will be getting a much larger contract than Zambrano.
  6. And Rowand Ks swinging to finish it up. Runners on 2nd and 3rd with none out, and the middle of the lineup at bat, and they fail to score. Good job, worthless piles of garbage.
  7. Phillies continue to squander what was an excellent scoring opportunity as Howard Ks looking.
  8. Phillies have men on 2nd and 3rd, none out, top of the 8th, Burrell up, still 6-1. Linebrink in to pitch for the Brewers. But of course, Burrell Ks swinging. Ugh. Is it too much to ask that the Phillies win one game against the Brewers?
  9. I definitely wouldn't support resigning Kendall due to his age and declining performance. I don't think Soto is the answer for the Cubs at the catcher's position, but he has to be the fallback option for the team in 2008.
  10. Well given that he has a career .366 OBP and .804 OPS in the minors, I'd say yes, the do suggest that he projects as something more than a "decent back up infielder." Meanwhile Ronny's career numbers are considerably worse - not necessarily a fair comparison because Cedeno started out in the minors when he was 18 and has always been young for his level, but the fact remains that Fontenot exhibits better patience, and his ability to not swing at everything means he hasn't been exploited at the big league level like Ronny has. Do you think that his solid minor league stats have something to do with the fact that he repeated AAA twice and was old for his level by a couple years by the end of it? I'm not saying Fontenot's bad, and I wouldn't want to release him, but I don't think that he is cut out to be an everyday second baseman.
  11. It is reasonable to say that there are significant mental aspects to the game. However, it is clear that whatever mentality it is that puts players in hot and cold streaks can't be controlled by the methods we have now, and many of the things that are believed to trigger them don't seem to have much effect.
  12. I've already agreed with that. You haven't directly addressed whether or not you agree that it is more accurate to assess players by the OPS rather than their OBP, even if they do not hit for power. Would you like to do that?
  13. He's definitely getting worse, but the fact that he put up a good OBP just last year likely means his good eye at the plate has not given out and he should be able to give us as good or better an OBP as he has to this point with the Cubs. I'll agree that it isn't impossible for him to maintain this level of production for the second half. He should be much better than he was in the first half, and miles ahead of Hill. It's very true that his lack of slugging affects his overall value, but we're paying him less than $1 million and he's not an integral part of the team structure. A good OBP will easily make him more valuable than Barrett, K. Hill or Bowen given their numbers this year. Yes, but that wasn't my argument. My argument was only that measuring non-sluggers by OBP only is not as accurate as measuring them by OPS.
  14. It hasn't been a steady decline, no. But it has undoubtedly been a decline. I've already said that I thought he could probably put up better numbers than he did in the first, but it is reasonable to say that a 33 year old catcher who hasn't hit as well as he used to for a while has passed his peak. Also, enough with measuring non-sluggers only by OBP. Regardless of whether or not power hitting is part of a player's game, their SLG affects their overall value.
  15. That's not a totally accurate comparison. Shelton had never done anything like that before, while Kendall has an entire career of performing like he's performed lately. So I don't see Kendall's latest performance to be as fluky as Shelton. And Kendall, as recently as last year, put up a .360 OBP. I just don't see how it's so ludicrous to think he could continue this .340-ish OBP or bump it up a little. What I really don't understand is the people who say "this isn't the Kendall of six years ago" or "this isn't the Kendall of 2000-2003 anymore." He was respectable last year (2006), decent the year before (2005) and good the year before that (2004). That doesn't even reach back to 03 or before. The reason people say that he isn't the old Kendall is because he has been declining for a few years and is unlikely to improve on last year's numbers due to his position and age. I think it is reasonable to expect him to be better than he was in the first half of the season though. If he can have a resurgent second half for the Cubs, he'll probably produce more than any of the other catchers we have would.
  16. .360/.424/.543 Cedeno in AAA .361/.403/.565 Pie in AAA Cedeno was playing better than Pie in AAA and just got called up. Calling Pie up would make sense, but not for Cedeno. They're better off dumping Fontenot or Pagan if that happened. Those two are worthless. Yeah Fontenot and his 111 OPS+ and .280 EqA are worthless, but sure let's keep Cedeno, a guy who had a .210 EqA last season. I sure am glad you're not running the Cubs. After his ridiculous start, Fontenot has cooled off considerably. It wasn't really unexpected either. His stats were entirely driven by an incredible batting average which was in turn the result of what proved to be an unsustainable BABIP. Do his minor league numbers suggest that he projects as anything more than a decent back up infielder?
  17. Better question, when will Cubs fans acknowledge that, despite having a couple of memorable meltdowns, Howry is actually one of the few consistently solid relievers in baseball?
  18. Get the next guy out, hold the lead.
  19. Not too much solid contact yet, which means that as soon as I type this, Gotay will hit a HR.
  20. Why I have much more confidence in Wood to hold this game where it is than Howry? I think your confidence may be misplaced. Howry has been pretty consistent, despite a couple of meltdowns. Wood hasn't pitched in the majors for about a year. One is Kerry Wood, the other is Bob Howry. Howry is a good reliever. Wood is probably still very rusty. It matters.
  21. He lacks the grit to be a clutch gamer. :D
