  1. I think after losing last night, the series is a coin flip, maybe favoring the DBacks a bit. The Cubs need to win 3 of 4, but are heavily favored in the next three games.
  2. Do we get fake rallies in the playoffs too, or will they just go down 1-2-3? I don't see Theriot doing much. Maybe he'll GIDP, but that's about it.
  3. Lou pulling Z had nothing to do with those hard hit balls and you know it. If Z stays in this game could still very well be tied. And if he had pinch hit for Zambrano in the top of the sixth, it might be 5-3. Who knows. It was a reasonable, if not great, move to put in the best reliever on the team.
  4. I wouldn't put it on Lou. It isn't as if he pulled Zambrano for Marquis. Marmol has been incredibly dependable. If you have a great option to send to the mound to replace Zambrano, you'd think you'd be able to afford to rest him for game 4. But, like all things in baseball, you can never be sure of the outcome, and it didn't work. It wasn't a great move, but it didn't cost the Cubs the game. Their inability to hit Webb has been the real problem.
  5. Those are just suggestions from writer Tom Krasovich: http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/padres/20071003-9999-1s3padres.html That makes more sense. Prior isn't really a guy you'd think about "filling out your rotation" since he hasn't pitched effectively since 2005. But he is still a name some people outside Chicago recognize.
  6. I hope they pencil him in his as trade bait to improve the offense. Three lefties in the rotation are too many and I think Marshall will always be a back of the rotation type of guy. Why is three lefties in the rotation too many? Who would they replace Marshall with? Prior will be trying to make another comeback, but they still need a decent fallback option if he gets injured again, which isn't that unlikely. 3 lefties in a rotation is bad because the majority of hitters are right-handed and most teams do much better against lefties (except the Cubs). It might be different if you have a lefty with exceptional stuff (Santana, Koufax, etc.), but Lilly, Hill, and Marshall don't fall into the "exceptional" category. They do fall into the "better than Marquis" category. I'd rather use a decent back of the rotation starter and have three lefties than let Marquis pitch. Regardless of what hand he throws with, he's a bum. If they can get decent value back for Marshall, they should trade him, but I don't know what he'd bring that would be worth it.

  8. Limiting the audience for the MLB playoffs shows a complete lack of respect for fans without cable, and while it will probably be great for TBS, it isn't good for the sport. This is disgusting.
  9. Good God, if the Cubs somehow flop, this thread is going to be bumped for months, at least... It won't actually be the OPer's fault, but still, never do this.
  10. Prior Wood Ramirez Lee Soriano
  11. It had better just be cramping. If the Cubs lose Carlos if they make the playoffs... ugh. Steve Trachsel cannot be in the playoff rotation.
  12. That's what I don't get. It seems like he's throwing FB down the middle of the plate and batters just miss it. He doesn't throw it down the middle often though. He's good at hitting the corners, and he usually just throws lots of pitches on the outside corner at the knees. He has some kind of breaking pitch -- a slider, I think, but he hardly ever uses it. It doesn't seem as effective as his fastball.
  13. Who was the Reds reliever who looked like he ws stabbing himself everytime he threw a pitch?
  14. I wouldn't call walking a ton of batters antics. I'd call it bad control. I'm more concerned with that.
  15. That was not so good. I think the gun is a little fast today, I don't think Hill has ever hit 94 before.
  16. You can question his desire all you want, but you have no evidence, so that is irrelevant. I think there is a strong chance that he will never be an effective starter again, but for a team with a $100 million payroll, I can think of many worse investments than $3 million to find out if Prior can come back. If he can't remain healthy next year, then let him go.
  17. So you are saying he will either be great, average, or suck? That's pretty insightful. The important thing to note is the possibility that he can come back and be an effective starter, not something that can be said about too many players. That alone makes it worth giving him a short small contract to see if he can stay healthy. The potential reward, a good starter, is much higher than the risk, $3 million for one year.
  18. Some time next year. He's said his goal would be to be ready for opening day, but I wouldn't be surprised if it takes him longer, given his history of problems.
  19. Although you'd expect his numbers at age 33 to be somewhat below his career numbers, especially considering that he is a catcher. Hopefully he continues to be a second half player and puts up decent numbers for the Cubs.
  20. i'd imagine it's pretty good, but that's just a feeling. we're very good at hitting w/risp and 2 outs, which scares the hell out of me, especially considering our lack of power. we needa a power hitter. go get one right now jim, i mean, tonight--or at least try. Can't be done through waivers, most likely.
  21. I'll never forgive Hawpe. I want his head on a pike.
  22. Why even swing the bat? Just take pitches and hopefully you get a walk. Right. The pitcher walked two in the inning, and Hill doesn't have much of a chance of getting a hit anyway.
