  1. A pitch that could stop in mid air would be awesome.
  2. some article (Daily Herald?) said Prior was ahead of Miller, who is in the long-toss phase of his rehab. didnt say where prior was, though. how is miller rehabbing? he was pitching in the big leagues in september? But not at 100%. few pitchers pitch at 100%. as far as i know teams dont rehab players (especially pitchers) in the majors. It also doesn't make sense that Miller was pitching in the majors in September and is only doing long toss now. That would be the case if he'd suffered another injury. that's what i'm saying. something seems strange about how this is unfolding. http://www.northsidebaseball.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=38426 Look at the second quote from the article.
  3. His reported potential long-term deal is worthy of suicide. And so it begins. Just so I can get it in before the lock: Did I call this one or what?

  5. Hypothetically, if all of our starters are healthy and pitching well, Marquis is the most expendable, since he has the least pitching ability and has a considerable contract. They might try to trade him ASAP. If Hill is struggling, he goes back to AAA instead, though I doubt Hill will be worse than Marquis in 2007.
  6. How do you know that for sure? No offense, but I doubt Hendry tells reporters all the deals that he's discussing. Probably, but I think that if one of a random person on a message board and a Cubs beat reporter were to know about a deal being discussed, it would be the beat reporter.
  7. Way, way over. It will go over 100 even in Premium. I'm guessing it reaches 99, then the board crashes sometime during or right before the Superbowl.
  8. Who the heck is that? At first, it kind of looked like Cedeno, but why would they put him on anything? I actually initially thought it was Cedeno also.... It's Soriano. Though I think the likeness is terrible. Ah, I can sort of see it now, but they didn't do a very good job of modeling him in the game.

  10. Just thought I'd add these particular quotes. VERY nice to hear. Hopefully they're not blowing smoke. When did the Cubs start murmuring that Prior wouldn't be ready for Opening Day in 2006? Are we past that point yet?
  11. people don't seem to be as giddy this offseason. Rightfully so. It's been a lot better than the previous two offseasons, for what that's worth. But it is coming off a season that was so much worse.
  12. How many spots are left on the bench, not counting the maybes from AAA? It doesn't seem worth it to pay more than league minimum for a guy who is going to be the 25th man anyway.
  13. I guess the idea is that innings eaters can safely be penciled in to take many innings that would otherwise go to replacement level crap from AAA, which is what happened last year because the Cubs didn't have a reliable pitching staff. Of course with Marquis, there's no guarantee he'll be substantially better than AAA crap.
  14. I agree. More than most teams, we have to wait and see how our players who were injured last year or are coming off abnormally good/bad years rebound.
  15. Probably because Wells hasn't had a season in which he was both good and healthy since 2003. Marquis sucked last year, but he has made his starts. That's most likely why Hendry was willing to overpay so much to get him. I'm a little late to this thread, but is there any reason to think that he will or won't bounce back from 2006?
  16. i would never in a million years count of wade miller and mark prior combining for 35 starts. i wouldnt count on anything more than 1 single start for the entire seaon out of both of them combined. i have said this countless times, but for us to pencil in prior/wade for anything is insane...let alone 35 starts. in my opinion, i wouldnt even act like either exist and we should plan on neither being on the roster and IF we get anything out of either of them its a bonus. i also would include wood into that category and just plan on him riding the pine for the entire 2007 season. I can see making an argument for why Wood, Prior, and Miller will be unlikely to have many effective innings for the Cubs this season, but I still have no idea what it means to plan for them to be injured. There is no way to plan for three talented pitchers to be injured, unless you want to raise the payroll by $30 million.
  17. Unfortunately, if the Cubs want to contend, signing Meche and Lilly is one of their few options. I'm undecided as to whether or not I'd rather they just rebuild in '07.
  18. Once the playoffs began I had the sick feeling that would win the World Series. I'm starting to get that same feeling again as it pertains to Schmidt. Don't you remember? The Cards don't need good players to win the WS.
  19. 4/40 for a 4.36 ERA in 1st year of the deal? Awesome, what a bargain! feel free to share your ideas for what the cubs should do. They could've NOT tried to do a worst-to-first overnight rebuilding job in the least favorable market in the history of pro sports. maybe it's the least favorable. From what I've read, a lot of people don't expect this to be a bubble that will burst in the future. Contracts are just going to keep going up. Plus, even if they sign someone like Lilly for 4 years, that's not a crippling contract. Soriano is the only one with a very long, very expensive deal. It's a bubble. You can't have average #4 starting pitchers getting 4/40 deals indefinitely. The numbers just won't add up in the longterm. Hasn't this been said for decades now? The market will dip temporarily at some point, but I have to believe that unless baseball loses popularity or the economy goes for a nosedive, salaries will continue to rise.
  20. I think he babies himself too much, and flinches at the first twinge he feels anywhere along his right arm. And this can indeed cause real problems down the road. It's a lot like a football player trying to play at less than full speed. You're trying to avoid injury, and in so doing.......you get injured. You seem to be contradicting yourself. At first he "babies himself," being bothered by even a slight pain . . . and then he's out there playin' hurt? Is he a "gamer" or a "j.d. Drew" ? It isn't a contradiction. He is saying that Prior coddling his elbow could cause injury, probably because trying to play in an unnatural way would cause him to alter his mechanics. Honestly, I don't think anyone at NSBB is qualified to say exactly what Prior's condition is, or whether he has mental issues, unless that person happens to be a doctor or pitching coach who has personally examined Prior. I doubt that he doesn't want to play, but any speculation is just that, speculation.
  21. And ESPN corroborates the story: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2683127
  22. I don't know much about Jennings. Besides his one great season and the fact that his career numbers are inflated somewhat by playing for Colorado, what makes people think he is a good option?
  23. I expect that they will only get two starting pitchers. The fifth spot in the rotation will be manned by Prior, Miller, or a AAA pitcher depending on health. I don't think it is a good idea to overwork Zambrano more than we already have, and I'm not sure how it would affect the starters' health and ability, so I'm against a four man rotation.
  24. I don't know his PECOTA projection, but his ZIPS projection for 2006 was .248/.295/.439. I don't think ZIPS likes Soriano very much.
  25. seconded I disagree that it was enough time to prove it wasn't a fluke. Players have fluke seasons, Theriot easily could have had a fluke 150 ABs. I'd say the chances it was a fluke are much higher than the chances that that is his real skill level. He might be able to produce something, but the Cubs shouldn't count on him like they did Cedeno last year.
