  1. Despite their record, they actually have a big negative run differential. They've basically been really lucky this season.
  2. And gave up 4 to one of the worst offenses in the league playing without their best hitter.
  3. I don't care about the matchups, when you have a willd pitcher with no control and the bases loaded, you bring in a new reliever. That was terrible. Completely terrible.
  4. Atleast with Barrett you would get the occasional home run with Kendall that just is not going to happen. Kendall has two HR this year playing in a very pitcher-friendly park. If he had played the whole season with the Cubs, he'd probably be in double digits now. Absolutely not true. Sarcasm. Bonds in with runners on and a tied game. Great.
  5. Atleast with Barrett you would get the occasional home run with Kendall that just is not going to happen. Kendall has two HR this year playing in a very pitcher-friendly park. If he had played the whole season with the Cubs, he'd probably be in double digits now. Hah, I forgot you were being sarcastic for a second.
  6. Kendall missed an easy foul pop, and then the batter gets a line drive hit.
  7. I thought only Barrett killed the team with his lack of all important grit.
  8. That I agree with. If the Cubs had to get rid of Barrett to keep Zambrano, I am all for getting rid of Barrett. Sure, but they didn't have to. That was the point. The numbers from this season are a meaningless sample size with plenty of varying factors. Checking out Barrett's overall numbers catching the staff in the time he's been here, he has been fine catching the Cubs pitchers.
  9. Carlos Zambrano, through June 1, had 4 quality starts out of 12. 3 of those QS's were with Blanco catching. Since the Barrett fight, Zambrano has 8 quality starts out of 8 starts. Barrett didn't catch any of them. Barrett caught 7 of the 8 non-quality starts, and the one Barrett didn't catch, Blanco caught him in a 5 1/3 inning, 2 run start that just missed being a QS. If ever there were an example of a pitcher and a catcher not getting along, that is it. Sample size. 12 starts proves nothing. If you would like to look at Barrett's stats catching the Cubs staff this year total, or over the last 3.5 seasons, they have been posted repeatedly, and don't support your argument. I'd bet that if you looked at Barrett's full 3.5 seasons catching Zambrano, any difference would be pretty small.
  10. If you can show me that a pitcher pitches worse to a catcher he doesn't like, great, you've got a case. Until then, I don't care what the pichers have to say about their catchers. They can blame them or praise them all they want, it comes down to their own abilities to pitch.
  11. not much. i think we're actually saving money. i think hendry made a good deal. Do you have a source on that? I haven't seen an article saying the A's sent the Cubs money, but I haven't looked at many articles on the trade lately.
  12. barrett hasn't exactly set the world on fire in san diego: 16 games, 57 AB, 0 HR, 8 RBI, .298/.298/.351, 77 OPS+ And yet he is still much more likely to rebound in the second half than any of the catchers we have had since.
  13. Add a fourth option for "should have just kept Barrett." If you pretend that the Cubs never had Barrett, this deal is OK. Considering that we once had a catcher that didn't suck, it isn't. This deal is better than the Barrett trade, but probably won't make up for it.
  14. I'm coming to the conclusion Barrett was our biggest problem the past 2 years. Notice our record since Barrett departed and notice the Padres record when Barrett starts. It's not good for the Padres. I can't tell if you are kidding. Are people still thinking that the reason we couldn't win early in the season was because the catcher didn't hit badly enough? The Cubs winning has more to do with the team playing better and finally catching breaks. The team is winning in spite of the catchers, not because of them. Maybe I over spoke when I said biggest problem. I just think yesterday, when Wuertz was pitching the balls Soto blocked are passed balls if Barrett was catching. Maybe. There is a slightly higher chance that Barrett would have allowed a PB. Or maybe he would have had another hit or two, and made the situation less important to begin with. These things don't happen in a vacuum.
  15. Or maybe they know they want to make other moves and want to get as much of Kendall's contract paid to allow fleixibility? People complain about the Cubs sacrificing payroll flexibility for Kendall, and then if it turns out they got some cash, say that it means they never had any flexibility to begin with. This was at most a lateral move from having Barrett, but I will be happier if the Cubs convinced the A's to send cash.

  17. Yeah, because trading a crappy catcher and a minor league relief pitcher for a guy who has been solid in 11 out of his 12 MLB years is always a bad idea. what is your definition of "solid"? He's been a below average hitter in 5 of his last 7 seasons, including an awful year this year. By all accounts he's not very good defensively. Based on what, the almighty OPS+? If you look at his average and his OBP, he hasn't been anywhere near below average. He's not a power hitter... most baseball players aren't. yeah, OPS+ sucks...batting average is clearly where it's at. If you want to look at one stat to determine how good a player is, go for it. OPS+ says that Jason Kendall has been barely, just barely, above average during his career. If you really believe that... well, I don't know what to tell you. Thing is, you have to consider the fact that kendall is at a position chock full of guys way below league average. That is not factored into OPS+.
  18. Yeah, because trading a crappy catcher and a minor league relief pitcher for a guy who has been solid in 11 out of his 12 MLB years is always a bad idea. When the catcher is 33 and has played 9 season (save 1 for a horribly disgusting broken ankle) at cather of 143 + games and that 12th season is the current one and by solid you mean league average yeah, it might be a bad idea. Calling Kendall's career league average isn't really fair. For a catcher, league average is pretty good.
  19. fine, his OBP has been above average the last however many years. Unfortunately you do have to do more than that to be an average hitter. And also unfortunately, his walk rate is way down this year. Coupled with his woeful average, he's not a very good player at this point in his career. He's not as bad as he was to start the year, but he's not very good either. Even in his "good" month, he posted a 326 OBP. That mostly has to do with a big drop in walks that he has suffered this year. It isn't impossible that kendall has lost his plate patience, but walks are one of the few skills that generally don't decline until very late in a player's career. I think that his walks are more likely to come back than his AVG, which has already come back up a bit. This is not a very good trade, but Kendall has a chance to put up decent production at a position where the Cubs had gotten nothing but gabage since the Barrett trade.
  20. I know Blevins was putting up good numbers this year, but what level was he putting them up in and how old is he? I was under the impression that he was a non prospect until this year. Also, what in Bowen's numbers make him look more likely to put up decent numbers than Kendall. Kendall won't be good, but his second half numbers are consistently better than his first half numbers and he has been hitting better than Bowen lately.
  21. An official press release on MLB.com says that Kendall was traded for a LHP. EDIT: Of course, Blevins is LH and I don't think it said anything about the pitcher being in the ML.
