  1. Wrong. I never thought we had a chance.
  2. I don't know what the [expletive] you're talking about. :fume:
  3. Sorry, but we have the best fans. Proof? We show up at all with how pathetic our team is.
  4. [expletive] Pujols. And his first inning homerun yesterday.
  5. When Derrick Bell was with the Pirates, he was better than both Pujols AND Lee combined. Raul Mondesi, too, when he was with the Pirates.
  6. You guys are making me really Love Burnitz! Who, BTW, is hittin .333 with a HR. Oh, Sean Casey is also hitting .333. Now, all we need to do is win a game.
  7. For anyone to expect instant success is silly. Many perenial All-stars have be sent back down in their first year (I'm not saying he will be or should be). I wouldn't worry too much about it. Remember, his team is 2-0.
  8. Not so much rehab as just getting ready? I think, if he had a couple more years of experience, in the same situation he'd be in Pittsburgh instead of Indy.
  9. He was 4-14 last year with a 5+ ERA. The Brewers took him out of the rotation somtime after the all-star break. He didn't earn this spot in Spring Training. He won by default. Not the way we want to do things.
  10. Wells? Yeah. Santos? no way. I'd be surprised if he's still on the team by June 1st. And, I'm not expecting us to send him down, but to cut him outright.
  11. http://www.postgazette.com/pg/06090/678444-100.stm The big shocker is they sent Gerut down! I think they think he's not fully recovered yet? Although, McCloth had a great spring! I'm annoyed they gave the fifth starter spot to Santos. The man did nothing to earn it. I think he's just keeping the spot warm until someone else shows they're ready for it, or until Kip is ready to pitch. Speaking of Kip, I read an interesting thing about him yesterday: His arm is fine, health wise. It wasn't affected by the surgery. It could be just a matter of him healing and building himself up. No one is really sure when he'll be back as there's little precident (sp?) for this injury. I have a feeling that Voglesong will be traded today or tomorrow. Did we really just name Victor Santos to our starting rotation?
  12. Who was sick of him back then? There are plenty of Cubs fans that get on Aramis now because they think he's lazy. It baffles me, but it makes it easier to understand how Pirate fans could've felt that way. I remember some posters, while they didn't outright say the trade was horrible, they didn't think it was all that significant. Aramis was an oft-injured, lazy player coming off a HORRIBLE year. While everyone agrees now it was a phenomenal trade, hindsight is 20/20, and the trade wasn't that amazing on the surface at the time. We knew what we were giving away. How old was he at the trade? 23 was it? (I forget his age and I'm too tired to look it up right now). Littlefield knew exactly what he ws doing. I Don't think he liked it, but he knew what he was doing. Hopefully, things are going to be better. There were some cost overruns for the new stadium, and trading Aram was one of the ways of paying them down. Supposedly, they're paid now, and we can stop fire sales. Not that we have much to firesale these days. BUt, we have a lot of young talent. If you throw enough of 'em out on the field, some of 'em will have to stick.
  13. No, it was prettyu horrific at the time too. I still scratch my head. Well, I do understand why. I just wonder how we got into that position.
  14. Keep in mind, we had Giles (in his prime) /Ramirez hitting 3-4 that year. Our starting pitching was a bit weak, and our bullpen fell apart. This is very true. But, he's a guy who could hit .300 AND hit 30 HRs. We knew what we had. I don't think he saw a world championship, but at least a winning record. Remember, we signed Chris Stynes to play 3b the next year.
  15. FWIW, I never heard any serious rumors until a day or two before the trade. It was a pure payroll move. The original intent was to trade Benson, but then he got hurt a week or so before the trade deadline, so that was the end of trading him. The Ramirez deal was thrown together very quickly. I read something (I think Paul Meyers of the PG wrote it) that the Pirates were over a debt/payroll ratio mandated by the league. I read this more than once, but I'm not sure I believe it or not. Yeah, his defence was a little suspect, as was his work ethic. But, I don't think I know a single person who ever suggested trading him. 2003 was the year we could have had a winning record. A few things just didn't go our way. Then the sell off... And that was the end of it.
  16. Who was sick of him back then?
  17. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/baseball/mlb/03/29/bc.bbn.pirates.mcclendon.ap/index.html
  18. Speaking on Wilson, There was a question in today's Q&A on Wilson: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06088/677516-126.stm Behind in in AAA is Big Brad Eldred. Who probably strikes out more. But, when he gets a hold of one..... Eldred didn't do much in his short time in the majors last year to warrent staying there. That he started the year in AA says something about him, though. Hence the bringing in of The Mayor. We've got a bunch of guys who can play Right Field, so we bring in Burnitz. Hmm.. OK, two of them were hurt last year (Wilson & Gerut) Add Ray Sadler to that group! :-) So, why are we trying to trade him? Obviously, we're not just trying to get rid of him else he'd be long gone. I think it's more a matter of we need quality (i.e. an experience starter), so we'll have to trade qaulity. Which is either a sign of respect or a backhanded compliment. Look for Wilson to be a DH in the AL next year (Just a guess)
  19. hmmm. hopefully the last sentence will work out for another team in the national league central that looks like that. The Pirates?
  20. Fortunately, we won't have to Trade Van B for Prior for four more years.
  21. Saw that this morning. Honestly? If this happened a month from now, I'd worry. But, I'm not sure he was supposed to be ready to throw yet. Let's see what happens next week.
  22. A buddy of mine just came back from spring training. He described Joe Randa as the second coming of Chris Stynes. Ouch.
  23. I agree with this. Burnett is recoviering quite nicely. When they sent him down, they guestimated a June return. I think, if her were older, they'd have kept him on the roster. But, they thought he'd be able to get some more innings in @ AAA and build more arm strength. Ollie just had his first year of Arbitration. There is a ton of potential. And, not just in the rotation. We have the aforementioned Burnett and Tom Gorzelany. Gorz is about 1/2 season away from being ready. And, Bullington and Van B coming off injuries. These two are anybodys guess. Bullington had lost a lot of velocity. Will the surgery restore it? And, Van B has had two major surgeries. How will he come out of it? Lots of potential. Lots....
  24. 4 of our five spots in the rotation are set. Two rookies, an almost rookie and Ollie. The second spot is down to a battle between Brandon Duckworth and Victor Santos. The Rotation: 1 Ollie 2 Duckworth or Santos 3 Duke 4 Snell 5 Maholom Ollie, Duke, Snell, Mahlom are all 24 or younger.
