  1. Most of what I'm reading in Pittsburgh is that Duffy isn't going anywhere. Basically, we don't have anyone else to play center field. It's no co-incidence that we started playing better ball after he came back up last year and started playing like he did the year before. The reality is, though, we have no one behind him either at CF or as a lead off hitter. Although, if we do make this trade, I'd love to see Freddy lead off. No stolen bases, but he'll hit enough doubles to make up for it! Jack will bunt him to second, leaving (in my projected order) Laroche, Bay, Nady, Paulino to knock him in.
  2. Based on Today's Post Gazette, two things - Duffy isn't going anywhere, as we'd have no one else to play cf. And the interest in Jones is at best cold. WE're still trying to get Laroche.
  3. Hmm. Can Freddy Sanchez play Center field? An interesting lineup... Sanchez Wilson (There's only one now, no need for a first initial.) LaRoche Bay Jacque Paulino (He who hit .310 last year) Bautista (Who'd probably play center?) Castillo (Other possibilities are Castillo on the bench, Bautista and Sanchez and 2nd & third, Nady in Left, Bay in Center) Not a bad lineup.
  4. McLouth? Utility outfielder. Duffy? Jury is still out. He hit 340 or so when he first came up in '05. And, after his tantrum last year, he played all right. His ability to run down fly balls is very good and he seems to have a decent arm. And, he can steal a couple of bases for you, too. Will he be an all star? No. An everyday outfielder? If he can get his [expletive] together, then yes, he can be a pretty good one. The cubbies should make this one, if only to get some potential for a player you're trying to move anyway. Not sure if this is a good trade for the Pirates however. Duffy is the closest thing we have to a leadoff hitter and an every day Center fielder. But, Jones hit 27 HRs, and if he plays the same as last year, with the short right field, there's reason to hope he can hit a a couple more. And ,the same short right field wall will hide some of the defensive short comings.
  5. Poor Keppinger. He was hitting the hell out of the ball for us at AA in '04. We sent him to the Mets with Kris Benson which allowed us to get Jose Batista back. (we also got Wigginton, and someone else but I can't remember who right now.) He was playing very well for the Mets at their AAA in '04 and there was talk about him being brought up to take over second base. Then someone slid into his knee. Missed most of '05 if I remember correctly. Maybe he'll get a break this year?
  6. I rooted for the Pirates all season long. And the nine previous seasons.
  7. Alas, Kent pitching on the North Shore of Pittsburgh took a hit yesterday w/ The braves pulling the LaRoche trade off the table. Trading Gonzo would have opened up a spot in the bullpen for Kent. A Sad day, indeed. I sooo wanted to see Kent in Black and Gold!
  8. May he keep his grace out of the NL Central. Unless, of course, he deigns to call PNC Park his Throne.
  9. After reading your post, I went to look it up, and I couldn't find any rules. But, all of the vote totals is for just the top three as you say. I could swear there were more. Old age is setting in, I guess.
  10. I'm not saying he should have won. But, I think he, at the least, deserved a 10th place vote on someone's ballot!
  11. That's what happens when you don't finish in last, I guess.
  12. Yeah, I found it after the fact.
  13. We gave up waiting. Part of the reason was that he seemed to have given up. The papers in PGH sometimes reported that his teammates felt he was soft. Maybe he needs a winning environment  Actually, there's probably some truth to that. But, part of the problem of the losing environment was Wells. He had a great year in '03, after growing from year to year. Then, in '04 he crashed. I didn't think we should have traded him last year. The guy we got (I can't even remember his name) did well in winter leagues, IIR. Still, I wonder if we would have done better with a pick? Also, look what happened to Schmidt after we traded him. You may joke, but there's something to what you say.

  15. I think it's great the Cards signed Kip Wells!
  16. The best rookie ever to not get a ROY vote! Discuss.
  17. Part of me wonders how serious the Sox are about signing him, and how much of this was about keeping him away from the Yankees. Question: Does the posting fee go affect Salary for luxury tax purposes?

Fixed. Hard to say exactly, but here's a picture of G. Ogden Nutting. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/18/Scroogeswim.jpg ALthough McClatchy is the managing general partner, Nutting and his son Bob are the majority owners of the team now. They've bought up the shares of those other partners who've wanted to sell. McClathcy owns the same stake as when the group first bought the team. The Nuttings are content to let McClatchey be the public face of the team. But, they're the ones who control the budget. There was rampant speculation all year that McClatchey was going to be "Fired" this year as General Partner, replaced by Bob Nutting. We do know now that that was never the case. Still, I wonder what would be if McClatchey controlled the money. I really don't know if it would be better. I do know it can't be worse.
  21. Major League Baseball is flush with Cash. And, what do the Pirates have to spend? About $10 to 12 Million in the offseason. The payroll stays the same in flush times? (FWIW, this does NOT include the $5 mil we're paying to Oakland to compensate the $13million singles hitter.) Ouch. It's a bit of a stretch to say we're Jason Schmidt and a heavy Lefty bat away from 83 wins. But, not that much of a stretch. (look at NL Central standings since All-Star game.) Which could cost us about $25 million, more than double what's available. Which would bring our payroll into the mid $60 million range. Still, to be sure, close to the bottom of the league in terms of payroll. The fans showed that we come out when we're winning. Look at how we showed up towards the end of the season, even with the team having been eliminated before federal taxes were due last year. Assholes. EDIT: I'll be the guy at Citizen Bank Ballpark with the sign that says "McClatchy Sucks!" when the Buccos are in town!
  22. Pissburgh? Right now the only one's we're pissing on are the Cubs.
  23. With a loss to Colorado and Pittsburg's win, the Cubs have clinched at least a share of last place! If the Pirates somehow manage to come back and tie it up, would they have a one-game playoff? If a tree fell in the forrest, and there was nobody around to hear it, did the tree make a noise?
  24. Rats. We screwed up in reverse.
