  1. Looking at VORP (which is positional), our 6-9th most valuable hitters are pitchers...
  2. Juan Pierre's VORP of -3.7 runs is good for 45/51 players to have played CF in the majors this year.
  3. I'll call Marshall leading off inning 2 of his start.
  4. Yes, and this is why I thought that it was absurd at the time. In 2005, when Lee was a monster, he added just over 1/2 run per game to the offense. Sure, some days he'll have a HR and 4 RBI, and win a game, but as a whole he'd add less than 1/2 run per game. Now if only the rest of the offense could average the other 4 runs we'd need to win once in a while...
  5. For those who like VORP: Pujols: 24.8 Cubs top 4 players: 25.9
  6. When's the last time we had a comfortable lead in a game... seems like Murton's game 1 homer was it...
  7. ...The kid was killed, in a baseball sense, at an incredibly young age. The Cubs don't throw established veterans with no future out there that frequently that long and that recklessly. But they treat their kids that way. Brilliant! Bravo on that whole post!
  8. That's awesome! :D
  9. I'm guessing he probably will for the 2nd rehab start...but I'm bad with figuring this stuff out... :P Looks like Iowa's on the road next week.
  10. Mientkiewicz has actually been at or below the league average in defense every year since 2003. His bat is abysmal. I just don't see him as any sort of upgrade.
  11. Per Will Carroll at BP:
  12. Juan Pierre's Aprils... April 2006: .256 .291 .329 April 2005: .297 .343 .407 April 2004: .319 .385 .394 April 2003: .266 .311 .323 April 2002: .284 .371 .284 April 2001: .344 .408 .406
  13. Baseball Prospectus is high on Carlos Pena's offensive ability. His full season VORP is 20.6, higher than any Cubs projection but Lee and Ramirez. Pena 20.6 (1B) and Walker 15.0 (2B) >> Walker 15.0 (1B) and Neifi/Hariston 6.3/1.7 (2B) In 1/2 year that's likely not more than a win and a half better, but I'll bet we need a game and a half in the standings to remain in this thing at all.
  14. We're leading the NL in pitches thrown per plate appearance, and near the bottom (12/16) in K/BB ratio. This needs to chage...
  15. Ronny's last in the league in pitches/PA...and without a walk. I'm not sure his eventual BA is going to carry him to a respectable OBP.
  16. From the Hardball Times: "Despite being in just his 11th season in the majors, Cubs infielder Neifi Perez has a chance to becomearguably the single worst hitter in baseball history."
  17. If Neifi *has* to play sometime, I actually think having him play when Maddux is on the mound makes the best use of Neifi's only skill.
  18. BP ran an article today on the A's philosophy of preaching OBP from the minor leagues up. In it they present a very interesting graph looking at minor league K and BB rates for all combined minor league affiliates from 03-05. Look to the right for the A's and the FAR LEFT for our beloved Cubs. http://baseballprospectus.com/news/images/4924_01.gif The bottom line is that the A's covet OBP as a skill in the draft and nuture it from A-ball on up. The Red Sox have recently adopted a similar mantra throughout the minor leagues. I'd love to see the Cubs move that direction.
  19. Top 5 comparable players from BP: Milt Cuyler; Coco Crisp; Tim Raines, Jr.; Johnny Damon; Juan Beniquez
  20. PECOTA weighs in on the debate with the following predictions: Pagan .257/.316/.386 with +defense Restovich .241/.308/.417 with +/-defense Neither is predicted to be much of an offensive player.
  21. That was exactly what I thought! No Walker and Cedeno if that's true.
  22. Cause and effect may be impossible to prove, but... in 2003, your leaders in Pitcher Abuse Points (BP's metric on high pitch counts): 1) Javier Vasquez, 2) Kerry Wood, age 26 3) Livan Hernandez 4) Mark Prior, age 23 Who in the entire league threw the highest average number of pitches per game in 2003? 1) Mark Prior [113.4] 2) Kerry Wood [110.7]
  23. I wonder what the long term risk is with this type of "labrum issue" and how it will/should affect Lee's next contract.
