  1. If you told me in the offseason that I'd see that line on gameday this season, I'd assume our record was a lot worse than six games over .500.
  2. It's irrational, but I want the Cubs to sell some prospects just to stop hearing the fans slot every Cubs prospect they've heard of into The Future as a starter. They'd still do it, just with prospects who have even less of a shot of making it happen.
  3. I feel like he was DFA'd not too long ago and the Cubs took a pass. Nobody wants that salary right now.
  4. Per twitter. Will serve as DH. Nice.
  5. I still think Marquis was an undervalued asset in his time here. Don't mistake that, I don't think he was particularly good. But he was a slightly below average back end of the rotation pitcher who contributed enough with his other skills as to be worth about what we paid him those first two years. The problem with Marquis wasn't that he in particular was overpaid. The problem was more that Hendry was incapable of getting any cheap role players. And with a bench full of guys like Neifi, a bullpen full of guys like Eyre, and our back end of the rotation usually being a bit expensive like Marquis, we didn't have room left in the budget to spend it on guys who might make a real difference.
  6. Pawelek gave up 0 ER in 63 IP while striking out 132. Even for fun, I just can't get excited by high school stats anymore.
  7. I'm not sure he has to add a whole lot more velocity, really. At 6'8", he probably releases the ball closer to home plate than most pitchers. So that should give him a couple ticks of phantom velocity.
  8. I imagine that's the case a lot of the time. Hard to bench those guys you're paying big money for. So you keep running them out there until they're either fixed or you can justify just dumping them.
  9. The 'if traded' thing is worthy of consideration, but otherwise it's a 'if you do things you've never done in your career in 2016, sure you can void the option'. And if he actually reaches those milestones in 2016, I'll be so happy about his previous year's performance that I wouldn't even care if he opted out of his contract.
  10. It means nothing. If they get a deal they like they'll gladly sign Fowler to a 4-5 year extension with the intent to trade him off before the end of the contract.
  11. I'm on board with Happ, Aiken, or even Daz.
  12. Yeah, I'm still sitting here wondering if they're going to bring them back out. Rizzo looked like he missed the tag there badly.
  13. Ok, I found this weird sign on reddit and thought some of you may get a kick out of it. Mildly NSFW, due to a poorly drawn boob. [spoil]http://i.imgur.com/qHOZ3eS.jpg[/spoil] The answer? [spoil]5 to 4 in the bottom of the fifth with one out and no one on.[/spoil]
  14. I can't help but give Neyer a partial pass. He's outshined completely by better writers when trying to write about current events. But he does a good job with historical stuff, and it was a lot of his work that provided a base for me to move into trying to really and truly understand the statistics behind the game of baseball. I wont ever hate the guy, but I'll roll my eyes and wish he was working on a book instead of writing articles for his website.
  15. I still think the jumbotron is a huge eyesore. I guess that makes me old.
  16. If they traded Gomez and Lucroy, they could absolutely restock the farm system. And if they're willing to eat money, they can probably get better prospects than you'd expect for guys like K-Rod, Aramis, Garza, and Lohse. Not top 25 guys, almost certainly. But if the Brewers ate most of Garza's contract I wouldn't be surprised to see him pull in a guy or two in the top 100-150. Braun will be tough to trade if they aren't eating cash, but if they eat a bunch of it they could net a pretty good return for him even with the steroid stuff. Fans don't care as long as it makes their team better.
  17. Good threads rise to the top through quality posts. Bad threads fall off the first page. This is capitalism. Megathreads are unamerican.
  18. Yeah, I like Daz, but if he's not sitting there at #9 I'd just as soon underslot and use the extra to go after a high volume of interesting arms later.
  19. what is it in particular you like? his 5.28 ERA? his 5.10 FIP? his 5.77 xFIP? the 6.49 FIP in '14? In fairness, his fastball velocity is increased over last year, as is his f-strike% and zone%. So there's at least some hope for his strikeout rate and walk rates to improve a bit. How much hope? I don't know. But I like him better than Schlitter.
  20. Looks like they're hoping for Strop 2.0, but I'm concerned about the velocity drop and corresponding drop in swinging strike rate.
  21. I'll echo TT's sentiments. The Mariners are an exciting fit. They've got some guys that could be fits for the bullpen or even the back end of the rotation, depending on how much their FO has soured on them.
  22. I once had a hat vendor say, "[expletive], you have a big head". I had to special order a bike helmet because I couldn't find one in store that would fit. In little league, we always used to have to have one helmet designated specifically for me. Most years, there were a couple helmets I could force onto my head and be extraordinarily uncomfortable. But for a few years there, there was just the one helmet. And I would have to stop play and go get it if one of my teammates thought it would be funny to wear it and was still stuck on base when I'd be coming up to bat.
