  1. One thing to keep in mind, when evalutating the pythagorean projections on the standings, the Cubs would have been 86-76 according to those third order projections. And one huge thing that play an impact in the "luck" of said teams (mind you, we underperformed our projections by 6 games) is the ability of the bullpen. While that hasn't been applied well to said projections, you will notice that the teams that overperform significantly (or underperform, in our case) happen to have bullpens that reflect upon that situation, for the most part. So let's assume that the few offensive upgrades this year cancel out the career year of DLee. If the bullpen performs as expected, we could assume an 86 win year. If they perform better and the starting pitching stays healthy, we could be looking a lot better. That all being said, I still am not a fan of any single move made this offseason... but it's hardly a lost cause yet. Especially if we sign somebody like Eric Byrnes to platoon with Jones in right.
  2. The only way I'm giving up Prior in a deal with the Orioles is if I'm getting back Miggy, Brian Roberts, Bedard, Mora, and Chris Ray... and they'd have to be picking up a few bad contracts on the way back out. *coughHowry,Neifi&Eyrecough*
  3. Congratulations on your impending promotion.
  4. Oh, I'd just like to point this out before anybody else does... In 1998, the one and only year he pitched for the Cards... he posted a k/9 of 10.8 In the rest of his years combined, his k/9 rate has been 5.58. While I still don't like the signing... if his previous level of cards luck holds up, he'll be a monster. Then again, that one year he pitched 3 and a third innings and posted a 5.40 ERA... so you never know.
  5. I think if we were to trade Lee, we'd definately have to look at the Sexson trade a couple years back for a benchmark. The Brew crew gave up Sexson and Shane Nance for Junior Spivey, Lyle Overbay, Chad Moeller, Craig Counsell and Chris Capuano, plus Jorge de la Rosa. I think given Hendry's ability to fleece people in trades, we should definately be able to look at any trade and one-up that. And mind you, the Brewers got a former all star, a former NLCS MVP, a major league ready first baseman, a crappy catcher, a solid 22 year old major league ready pitching prospect, and a guy who won 18 games last year.
  6. I sincerely doubt this is anything good for the cardinals. His strikeout rate when healthy isn't anything to write home about... about 5 k/9. And his walk rate was only especially good in 04... still averaging slightly under 3 most of his other years. He can put up league-average numbers... especially with that defense behind him. But he wont do anything to earn the kind of money he's getting.
  7. On a side note... Does anybody else find it odd that the link points to the Atlanta Braves site on MLB.com?
  8. Garland's a free agent after next season. If the Orioles trade Tejada, it's guaranteed they're going into rebuilding mode. Somehow I don't think they'd do this deal just to dump salary, especially considering Tejada's impressively reasonable contract. They'll want good prospects. That's assuming Peter Angelos wouldn't fork over the necessary cash to sign Garland to an extension... which he obviously would.
  9. With as horrible as Baltimore's pitching is, that might be a decent trade for them... provided that they managed to put together an insanely good defense to deflate his numbers like they were last year. And Uribe aint bad, I always use him for my utility infielder on MVP 2005. :)
  10. Chris Young projects a lot like Mike Cameron... Definately a killer trade for the D'Backs.
  11. Considering the type of guys on this team now (in particular, Dempster), I think he'd get along with everybody extremely well. Yeah, I think that's fairly well known about him. But given the way the Cubs put up with Burnitz last season, they're more than willing to accept streaky hitters. Hell, they kept Neifi going even after his one hot month. This is another one of those situations where the numbers don't show the same thing. While I'll grant that defensive numbers aren't completely accurate on a year-by-year basis, the fact is that he's not nearly as bad in the field as it looks like... kind of like a backwards Omar Vizquel. Well, considering the fact that Boston doesn't want anything to do with him, and absolutely nobody is looking at him as a potential starting right fielder, I think he'd take the job. He might not be happy all season... but damnit, we hired Dusty for his supposed "players' manager" title. I'm not really advocating handing him a buttload of cash and the starting job. IMHO he's just the sort of low-risk, high-reward player we should be targeting. Cause even if he's not doing wonderful and we sink to the cellar, some playoff bound team would be willing to take him off our hands for the rest of the season to cover for their injured starter.
  12. Isn't he pretty lousy defensively? Like really lousy? In 193 career games in left field, he's 2 runs above average. 170 games in right field, he's 9 runs below average. And in 425 games at first base, he's been 20 runs above average. (I omitted third base because he's only ever played 28 games there and hasn't since 2002.)
  13. Every time I think about Brad Ausmus getting a nice fat contract, I can't help but think about the comments BP made in their book last year. ...With John Buck out of the way and a $3 million salary in '05, he'll be the starter again, but Ausmus may be the worst regular in baseball.
  14. Now let me start this off by saying I know he's not a great option. He's injured about 20% of the time, and his drop in power last year when steroids were being tested for is certainly disconcerting. However, he's still a career .289/.365/.477 hitter... which is certainly better than Jacque Jones. What do you guys think? I'd probably throw 3-4 mil at him and offer him a chance to win a right field job. Even if he just throws up a 754 OPS like last year, he's still a more useful part off the bench than we're used to.
  15. Am I really expected to take this kind of abuse from a cardinals fan? I'm certainly aware that it's not the best idea in the world. But with the way this offseason has gone for the Cubs so far, coming up with scenarios (no matter how impossibly far-fetched) is certainly more entertaining than trying to sign Dusty to an extension. At any rate, I certainly made note of all the items you thought so important to mock me for in my original post. So if you're not gonna be offering constructive criticism, would you mind leaving me the hell alone?
  16. He's also in his contract year. I wouldn't want him if it took giving him an extension. But I'd certainly have to give thought to taking him for a single year.
  17. Per Rotoworld: Maybe we're looking in the wrong direction to solve our problem. Everybody knows Barrett isn't a wonderful defensive catcher. Javy isn't anymore either, but Barrett has the range to man an outfield corner (for heaven's sake, he was drafted as a shortstop). Javy could give us better than average production for a catcher, and Barrett would provide about average offense at a corner, provided he maintains last years numbers. Weak as shortstop is right now, a team can survive without much offense coming from it. And considering the abismal offerings in available outfielders, this might be a better move for us to make. Opinions?
  18. Dear god, this would make my year.
  19. Macias has apparently gotten an offer from the St. Louis Cardinals. It's for 3 years and 2.4 million dollars, and a rags-to-riches MVP season in 2006 after Pujols tragically dies in a plane crash during the preseason.
  20. Not guilty. But for Benitez... yeah.
  21. 1987 Indians had Steve Carlton and Phil Niekro for a while.
  22. 4 all-star caliber middle infielders in LA now... not too shabby. (Though I'll grant, Izturus isn't much of an all-star.)
  23. Also per rotoworld: The Dodgers are close to acquiring Alfonso Soriano for reliever Jonathon Broxton, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports. That would be a considerably smaller price tag than expected and more in line with what Soriano is worth[/i]
  24. Per Rotoworld: ESPN's Peter Gammons is reporting that Kris Benson is on his way to the Royals for Jeremy Affeldt and Mike MacDougal. Metsblog.com's Matthew Cerrone says it might be a prospect instead of MacDougal along with Affledt. The Royals can't give up both relievers for the right to pay Benson $15 million over the next two years.
