    Your mention of the hit and run just severely soured me on Girardi. The hit and run may very well be the worst call a manager can make, outside of choosing who plays. If the Cubs never again called for the hit and run as long as I lived, I'd feel much more confident in our ability to win a World Series before I die.

    He could always negotiate another out clause, this time based on team payroll or record or something. I mean, Mike Lowell had one based on whether or not the Marlins had a new stadium.

What I have been saying? I'd be offended is somebody told me I acted like Dusty Baker too, but you did imply davhern is a wife beater.

    Dusty Baker? Why am I not at all surprised at the fact a lowbrow joke went way over your head? More simple terms, then. You have repeatedly overvalued crappy, overpaid veterans. You seem to have no grasp for advanced levels of logic or science. You use archaic tactics just because other people use them, without any real thought involved. Essentially, you exhibit the same traits as Dusty Baker... a man who just got fired from baseball for a reason.

It deals with his anger problems. Start backing up your opinions with fact, and less might get angry. Here is a fact: Sac bunts work. If they didnt, they wouldnt be used in baseball. Here's a fact: Iraq had WMDs. If they didn't, we wouldn't have gone in there. Here's a fact: Smoking pot is a smart decision. If it wasn't, people wouldn't do it. Here's a real fact: Saying that just because people do it, it's smart... isn't. Edit: Wait a second... you nearly had me fooled. Everybody, I'd like you to meet Dusty Baker.

    It's a shame we have to waste that great stat by poor position play. Our guys are above league average in "catching the ball." We were sixth in the majors in defensive efficiency (the percentage of balls put in play that were turned into outs) It's just all those damn walks we give up. It's going to drive me crazy that Dusty never figured it out. He commented on how the walks were hurting us, but he never made the connection that if we would be the ones taking the walks we could hurt other teams. I mean, really, how thick can the man be?

    No player on the Dodgers with more than 400 PA had an OBP lower than .355 Drew - .393 Ethier - .365 Furcal - .369 Garciaparra - .367 Kent - .385 Lofton - .360 Martin - .355 I realize 400 AB is a strange cutoff, but people were either above 400 or below 250, the only exception I saw being Jose Cruz. In other words, a playoff caliber offense can't have holes in the lineup like Pierre is, unless he's the only hole. Can a team drag a guy like Pierre into the postseason? Yeah... but he's sure not helping the situation.

    Get Giles and Andruw Jones. I like Andruw, but he's another Juan Pierre waiting to happen. He has 1 year left on his contract. It would cost a lot to get him and you risk losing him after just one season. He's going to want his HUGE payday on the next contract he signs. That's why I like Drew more. Unless we take on some bad contract for Andruw. Picking up the rest of Hampton's or Hudson's contract would probably lower the price of prospects quite a bit

    I'm looking forward to a season in which I don't know anybody who's injured. Training staff hasn't been canned yet (and they shoulda been the first to go), so I don't see a healthy team happening.

    Agreed. Zambrano is something that can be easily taken care of in spring training. Unless we're really scared about the starting pitching market inflating to the point where he'd get 100 million instead of 75 or so, it's very stupid to work on this before the more important things.

    Hey Bruce, do you have any idea where all of the lying about injuries came from? If it was the coaches, I'd love to look forward to a season where I might actually know who's injured and for how long. If the traning staff or Hendry was dictating it.... ugh.

    I'd do 5/75 for Z in a snap. Even if he blows out his arm he could play right field for us.

    While I'm fairly fantatical in my analytical approach to baseball, a manager's job is extremely hard to divine from the numbers. Even taking all the right tactics doesn't necessarily make for a great manager. Motivation and player control in general are just as much a part of the job, if not moreso nowadays. Sure, I'd love a motivator that doesn't abuse the hit-and-run, but there's nobody on the market like that right now (unless Earl Weaver decides retirement sucks). Given the choices out there right now, Girardi is near the top of the list. He doesn't do the infuriating things as much as guys like Frank and Sweet Lou, and he seems like he'll get the most out of these guys. Is he the ideal manager? No. I don't think anybody's saying that. But he is just about the best available, and that counts for something.

    What do you like about Francona? Francona was on the Discovery Channel's show about the science of baseball (i.e., sabermetrics) and talked glowingly about the *new* types of analytical analysis. I don't know if affects his management though. That he had Youkilis as his leadoff hitter most of the season would make me believe it does affect his management. They actually had Brian Roberts most of the season. Youkilis had 391 AB and Roberts had 560 AB in the leadoff spot. Both had very respectable OBP. although... Ummm... Brian Roberts?

    Pretty sure, though I don't have it offhand. I would say he might have given up a few more inherited runners, but he also was saved by others preventing his runners from scoring. You come in and strike out 1, walk 1, and then give way to somebody else who gets 2 outs, and it looks like you did a great job. But you allowed half the runners you faced to reach base. BP estimates he kept 2 more runs from scoring than expected, but that the relievers behind him saved him about 7 and a half runs... nearly twice as many as the next guys. In other words, he was pretty good at keeping inherited runners from scoring, but the rest of the pen was even better at keeping his from scoring.
