  1. Evidence that a player's production goes up 20-30% during their contract year? I guess I don't have any hard evidence, but observation seems to point to much better production during a player's contract year. All of a sudden .260 hitters turn into .300 hitters, guys who average 25 HRs hit 35 HRs, and pitchers who win 12 games suddenly become 18 game winners. That's because it sticks in your memoery a lot harder when a guy has an amazing year in his contract year than when a guy does the same as always or disappoints in his contract year. I wanna say there was a study done that showed no real improvement in contract years. I don't doubt that it's possible that a guy knowing it's his contract year takes the time to get himself in peak physical condition, realizing what's at stake (HI MOISES!!), but I don't find it to be the norm. I vaguely remember the study as well, though I believe it did show marginal improvement. 5 points of avg or so... The one thing I do remember seeing is that guys in contract years tend to play more often than they had in previous years. So I guess they're trying to stay in the lineup more, but it doesn't mean they're doing much better. And just cause I have to mention it... This is a contract year for Marquis.
  2. Beltre's pre-career year career is nowhere close to Soriano's. He was also a free agent after age 25. At that age Soriano was playing his first big league season, .268/.304/.432 It's revisionist history, but hasn't time shown that wasn't simply Beltre breaking out? Maybe so, but the fact remains is that he had a much better chance to improve upon or sustain his numbers than Soriano does. I hesitate to hand out 5 year deals to guys on the wrong side of 30 already.
  3. (Incorrect answer buzzard) Soriano will be a bust, but the situations between Soriano and Beltre are FAR different. Beltre had one ONE great season, after several FAILED seasons, and his one career yr, came in on his walk year. Soriano has had atleast some decent productive yrs---with the Yankees at least---in his past. Maybe 2006 is a career yr, but he is a better bet to be worth his next contract then Beltre is on his contract. How old was Beltre when he signed his big contract?
  4. They've always wanted to win, and they've already opened the wallets. The problem is Hendry's ability to use money to acquire quality players. Exactly. Hendry wastes about $10-15m in budget per season on players whose roles could be filled for far less. He's spent his budget poorly. Baker helped Hendry waste that money by reccomending certain players. The question is, will Piniella help Hendry waste that money on crappy "role players". Or will he pressure Jim to go out and get guys like Soriano for a change. I eagerly await the outcome of that answer. That Travis Lee, man, that guy is a ballplayer.
  5. I just want to say that if Sweet Lou does really end up being the next Cubs manager, I wont be happy that Dusty was let go either.
  6. I disagree. I'd be happy to send them Izturis for Bochy. :D
  7. i would argue that a salary floor would be more effective, but neither would be particularly good (or bad) for baseball. I've often thought the same, but I think you would see some ridiculous contracts. What if the salary floor was, say, $40 million. What would the Marlins have done this year? Be forced not to play promising youngsters? Give artificial raises to people? Sign some aging vet to a ludicrous contract? I'm sure JoBo wouldn't have minded a $25 million dollar one year contract.
  8. On Mike and Mike they were also talking about whether they would trade Zambrano for ARod. Greeny said yes, Golic said no. Forgive me for not trusting in Golic's baseball knowledge. The Yanks would jump on Zambrano for ARod in a heartbeat... not that I'd want to do that, of course.
  9. General consensus is that he's the best pitching prospect to ever come out of Japan. Take that as you will. Personally, I'd throw money at him like there's no tomorrow. Hideki Irabu came with the same description and accolades. I think its a risky proposition. "Best ever" tends to mean more the larger the sample size.
  10. General consensus is that he's the best pitching prospect to ever come out of Japan. Take that as you will. Personally, I'd throw money at him like there's no tomorrow.
  11. Dude saved us. We're planning on re-signing him to a 2 year, 5 million dollar contract.
  12. I'd been toying around with that exact idea, actually. I'm just trying to figure the numbers.
  13. I think the right situation usually presents itself. For instance, the Yankees have a very lack-luster pen and tons of cash. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Brian Cashman would be willing to take a chance on Dempster if all he had to give would be salary relief.
  14. Piniella would be a hit with the San Francisco AARP's.
  15. Pierre has been basing his career on the faulty assumption that there's such a position as the leadoff man. Unfortunately, there isn't. Pierre plays centerfield. Whether he's leading off or not, there's no debate that he plays centerfield. And for a centerfielder, he is not productive. If you took below average production from every position in the field just because they fit some archaic mold of a lineup, you'd be a very bad team. Personally, I'd rather take production first and cobble together a lineup second. I'd be far from upset if I had too many "#3 hitters" and had to put on of them in the leadoff spot.
  16. Agreed. I'm a nice guy. Can I make four million to manage the Cubs? Four million may sound like a lot but remember... Dusty was paying for his own toothpicks.
  17. Interesting point. By the way, moneyball isn't about stats. It's about identifying weaknesses in the market and exploiting them. It's more about the economics of baseball. But I'm sure you already knew that; otherwise you'd just look silly talking about things you don't know. You'd be better off using the term sabermetrician.
  18. I'm not. There'd be a reason the BoSox are looking for a better center fielder...
  19. 1. Cabrera 2. Matsuzaka 3. ARod 4. Manny 5. Wells
  20. Your mention of the hit and run just severely soured me on Girardi. The hit and run may very well be the worst call a manager can make, outside of choosing who plays. If the Cubs never again called for the hit and run as long as I lived, I'd feel much more confident in our ability to win a World Series before I die.
  21. He could always negotiate another out clause, this time based on team payroll or record or something. I mean, Mike Lowell had one based on whether or not the Marlins had a new stadium.
  22. Anger Management. Let me guess, you probably would beat your wife/husband if you had one? There are somethings you just keep to yourself. No need for you negative posts. Let's keep this on the topic please. This type of post in completely uncalled for. You say my post is completely uncalled for. Have you been seeing what that Rob guy is saying? What I have been saying? I'd be offended is somebody told me I acted like Dusty Baker too, but you did imply davhern is a wife beater.
  23. Evil nothing. It's evening out God's hatred of the Cubs... call it Karma.
  24. Dusty Baker? Why am I not at all surprised at the fact a lowbrow joke went way over your head? More simple terms, then. You have repeatedly overvalued crappy, overpaid veterans. You seem to have no grasp for advanced levels of logic or science. You use archaic tactics just because other people use them, without any real thought involved. Essentially, you exhibit the same traits as Dusty Baker... a man who just got fired from baseball for a reason.
  25. I'm really hoping he has some secret medical condition that makes him allergic to baseballs.
