  1. I'm looking forward to a season in which I don't know anybody who's injured. Training staff hasn't been canned yet (and they shoulda been the first to go), so I don't see a healthy team happening.
  2. Agreed. Zambrano is something that can be easily taken care of in spring training. Unless we're really scared about the starting pitching market inflating to the point where he'd get 100 million instead of 75 or so, it's very stupid to work on this before the more important things.
  3. Hey Bruce, do you have any idea where all of the lying about injuries came from? If it was the coaches, I'd love to look forward to a season where I might actually know who's injured and for how long. If the traning staff or Hendry was dictating it.... ugh.
  4. I'd do 5/75 for Z in a snap. Even if he blows out his arm he could play right field for us.
  5. And here I was thinking that when I said "just about" everybody would understand that it was in deference to you and your Dierker fetish.
  6. While I'm fairly fantatical in my analytical approach to baseball, a manager's job is extremely hard to divine from the numbers. Even taking all the right tactics doesn't necessarily make for a great manager. Motivation and player control in general are just as much a part of the job, if not moreso nowadays. Sure, I'd love a motivator that doesn't abuse the hit-and-run, but there's nobody on the market like that right now (unless Earl Weaver decides retirement sucks). Given the choices out there right now, Girardi is near the top of the list. He doesn't do the infuriating things as much as guys like Frank and Sweet Lou, and he seems like he'll get the most out of these guys. Is he the ideal manager? No. I don't think anybody's saying that. But he is just about the best available, and that counts for something.
  7. What do you like about Francona? Francona was on the Discovery Channel's show about the science of baseball (i.e., sabermetrics) and talked glowingly about the *new* types of analytical analysis. I don't know if affects his management though. That he had Youkilis as his leadoff hitter most of the season would make me believe it does affect his management. They actually had Brian Roberts most of the season. Youkilis had 391 AB and Roberts had 560 AB in the leadoff spot. Both had very respectable OBP. although... Ummm... Brian Roberts?
  8. Pretty sure, though I don't have it offhand. I would say he might have given up a few more inherited runners, but he also was saved by others preventing his runners from scoring. You come in and strike out 1, walk 1, and then give way to somebody else who gets 2 outs, and it looks like you did a great job. But you allowed half the runners you faced to reach base. BP estimates he kept 2 more runs from scoring than expected, but that the relievers behind him saved him about 7 and a half runs... nearly twice as many as the next guys. In other words, he was pretty good at keeping inherited runners from scoring, but the rest of the pen was even better at keeping his from scoring.
  9. I sure hope so at this point. With Gonzalez off the market, the longer we wait... the better the odds that Sweet Lou makes his way to the North Side.
  10. Sweet, my optimism didn't even last 36 hours since the firing of Baker.
  11. I'd be extremely surprised if the Trib actually managed to finalize the sale of the Cubs within the next five months. Heck, Major League Baseball will take longer than that to go through everything in approving the new owner(s).
  12. How is Kazmir more like Brackman than Price? I wonder what would happen to KC's interest in Wieters if Boras is his adviser. Hopefully it disappears entirely. The more I've looked through his numbers, I've developed some serious man love for Wieters.
  13. IIRC, that guy had "Fire MacPhail" written on the back of that same sign. Sign is shooting 100% so far...
  14. I'm afraid that announcement will come literally seconds after announcing Dusty wont be back. I deserve a honeymoon period, damnit. I've been unhappy since May... just give me a couple weeks of unbridled optimism already.
  15. I have a feeling Hendry is gonna do some big things this off season....knowing his job is in serious jeopardy. Same here, so I'm pretty scared. Big pressure leads to big mistakes. Say hello to CLee at 5/60.
  16. Frank Robinson, Lou Piniella, and Felipe Alou all available in the same offseason. Let's just say there's a reason I was hoping Dusty got fired in-season.
  17. I did take all of that into account. :P
  18. baseball7897 has an Angels fetish. His idea of a damn good Angels player is about the same as our idea of Jose Macias.
  19. What on Earth are you bringing in Erstad for? If he's not healthy enough to play CF, he's got no value... and he's never healthy enough. Erstad is a pretty damn good player. No, he probably cant play CF anymore, but I was looking at him playing LF. Erstad is a risk I would take. Its not like I would sign him to a 4 million dollar contract. He would get something similiar to what Mabry got from the Cubs. You want to take a guy with an IsoP of about .100 and stick him in left field? People talk about Murton not developing enough power to stay in left field, and his is at .140. Erstad's bat doesn't play anywhere except SS or CF anymore... and he better be about average in the field at either to justify a roster spot. One year, league minimum. Fifth outfielder. Only to be used to cover center in emergencies or to pinch run. That's the best way to maximize his value to a team. If he costs more than the minimum, he's not worth it.
  20. What on Earth are you bringing in Erstad for? If he's not healthy enough to play CF, he's got no value... and he's never healthy enough.
  21. I wish he had completely dominated his competition at AA, but that's simply not the case. 86.1 IP 74 H 55 BB 91 K A 1.49 WHIP doesn't usually translate to a 2.71 ERA, even if the strikeout rate is over one an inning. He got lucky on his AA ERA, no two ways about it. That's not to say it wasn't a solid showing for a young kid. Holding your own when you're young for the league is enough to make you a good prospect in my eyes. But he wasn't nearly so dominating as you're making him out to be. Don't let any of this make you think that I somehow don't like Gallagher. He's one of my favorite prospects. But he didn't dominate AA, and he isn't seen that highly in the eyes of other GMs around the league (as far as I've heard, anyways). That's all I'm saying.
  22. At least the right side of the field is playing stellar defense tonight.
  23. Kevin Goldstein just did an article on BP where he put Gallagher in the same five man group as Homer Bailey, Scott Elbert, Yovani Gallardo, and Phillip Hughes. He does conceed that Gallagher is a step behind those guys, but the mere fact he can be mentioned in the same group means you're underestimating him a bit. That being said, "baseball men" don't seem to value Gallagher all that much, despite the results he continues to get. His stuff is obviously better than Yusmeiro Petit's was... but he seems to get lumped in his class, for better or worse. Gallagher has very little value in a trade, and can't be the centerpiece of a deal for an elite talent. Considering his status in the eyes of GMs with his actual potential to produce, it's sheer folly to even suggest he be included in any trades. We'd be selling him for fifty cents on the dollar.
  24. I have no choice but to slice it up. To look at all of his mistakes simultaneously might give me a stroke. Perhaps you are right, but I'm still inclined to think about the system as a whole. This team wasn't going to the series this year irregardless.... the prospects from a Pierre deal might have helped get us to the series in a few years.
  25. No, it wasn't as bad as trading for him in the first place. He wasn't going to get as much as he gave up. Plus, trading for him for pretty much determined, in advance, that the outfield would not be productive this year. I meant in-season. If we look at his offseasons, we could be here all night. But in-season, there was only so much that could be done. Not getting a significant prospect haul for Pierre or not firing Dusty is about the worst I can think of.
