  1. Since I was talking about Fangraphs Power Rankings earlier, I'll mention they updated the rankings. Cubs are sitting 4th right now, behind the Braves, Dodgers, and Yankees. Padres all the way down at 21 due to their rough start.
  2. Got stuck in one of the hatches. RIP.
  3. As far as arbitrary line-drawing exercises go, I can support this one.
  4. Ooof. Yeah, no. I hadn't looked at those. Rough.
  5. Are you framing his attempt to correct himself as a bad thing? There is a lot of language that was pervasive in our society which has racist, sexist, ablest, etc... origins. I grew up completely ignorant as to the provenance of these words. Truthfully, there are still a great many I am learning. Every once in a while, I'll find myself unconsciously using one of these words. For instance, I accidentally referred to "Eskimos" when discussing something with my six year old the other day, rather than any of the proper terms. I thought I was doing the proper thing to own my mistake, and go back to correct myself. We aren't perfect people, and expecting perfection is only asking to be let down. I think it far better to assume the best intentions of those attempting to adjust their behavior moving forward, rather than casting it as proof of some mask-dropping moment.
  6. I mean, choose your projection system, but the Fangraphs opening day power rankings had the Padres just one slot ahead of the Cubs, with a 1512 ELO compared to the Cubs 1508. Their depth charts rankings had us like 17th to the Padres 13th. And I'm sure there's plenty of other ways to look at it. Long story short, I think we're approximately in the same tier as the Padres. Losing Steele hurt, though. But not enough that I'd say we "ought to be" bludgeoned.
  7. Thanks. I appreciate all the cognitive dissonance this is creating.
  8. I don't have Twitter or Instagram, so I can't check the ump scorecard people. But I'd love for somebody to post that one here.
  9. We've had how many strikeouts looking on that pitch that was just called ball 3? Baloney.
  10. Walked in two runs, but the ump let him off the hook both times.
  11. Then surely you're not too chicken to inform them?
  12. There's some survivorship bias issues here. Maybe the reason Fergie and all those guys were as effective as they were despite the workloads is because they were the only genetic freaks capable of handling that workload.
  13. Yup. Bonds and Ruth are north of 160. Mays and Cobb sitting at 150. Williams is "only" at 130, but he missed 3 full seasons and parts of 2 more (all during his prime) due to his military service. So for a player to be in the GOAT conversation, they probably need to be in that 150 range at least, or have a damn good reason why they aren't.
  14. Mookie has to put up another 100 fWAR to be in the discussion for GOAT. If you want to put money on it, I'd give you some good odds.
  15. In 2023, Hendricks posted the second highest fWAR on the pitching staff. 2.8. Higher than everybody but Steele. Pretty much tied with Stroman (0.1 fWAR higher in 0.1 more IP). He's not as good as he once was, but he's a fine 4th starter. The problem is that with Steele out, we need too much out of him. But that's a Hoyer problem, not a Hendricks problem.
  16. I don't think judging anybody on what they've done against the Dodgers is fair.
  17. He'd be a bad pick at the moment, but he's clearly going to get there. The press likes him, so even if he wakes up blind tomorrow a la Kirby Puckett or dies in a plane crash like Roberto Clemente, they'll elect him on a "what if" basis. But assuming even a very abrupt decline phase, he's gonna clear 60 fWAR and be well-liked. He's in.
  18. Pat Hughes was going nuts in the booth about the Hoerner play. Wish I could watch it, but the shady internet site I used to stream from is no longer working, and MLB.tv seems to have blocked literally every VPN server I have access to.
  19. I'm curious, who all do you think is being replaced? I could see us demoting Gomes into more of a backup role, but he's still gonna get starts. The only guys who aren't well-established starters in our lineup today are Morel, Busch, and Madrigal. And even that's a misnomer, as Morel is 100% a starter, it's just a question of if he gets to play in the field.
  20. Potentially a tough matchup, wind blowing in (albeit from LF), no other clear opportunities to rest Busch for a while. My guess is that he's riding the pine today. But given how impressive he's been thus far, I also wouldn't be surprised if Counsell gives him a shot today. I don't think there's a "wrong" answer here -- hence why it's such a good test case to see how Counsell manages.
  21. With this kind of high-effort, high-quality content, I don't know why this board has been so reluctant to follow @Brock Beauchamp's plan to abandon the mega-threads.
  22. Yes. It would be easy for the players to get upset and a bit fatalistic after blowing a lead like that. We have all watched Cubs teams do exactly that over the years, phone in their effort or blame each other for the issues, and watch the team blow the game. It shows good team character that they stuck with it tonight and managed to quickly recover for the win.
