  1. I mentioned Baty as a potential return for Tauchman a week or so back. I'm still not sure I pull the trigger, but it's reasonable.
  2. With the rise of two-way players, I'd love to see the Cubs start letting more people attempt to develop simultaneously as a hitter and pitcher.
  3. I'm really only interested in how Day 3 begins. Thanks to the way the draft is structured, the 11th rounder remains interesting. But the odds of getting anything from anybody after that is close to zilch.
  4. Depends. Wetherholt could have been asking the moon. He was in consideration at 1.1, after all.
  5. By the time he makes it to the show, I'm pretty certain that framing will matter a whole heck of a lot less than it does now.
  6. I hadn't decided whether Fenwick Trimble was a helpful or meddlesome hobbit. I think Cobb Hightower would be helpful, and Fenwick Trimble would have been assisting Lobelia Sackville-Baggins to walk off with the cutlery.
  7. I was thinking of him more as a hobbit with a penchant for ancillary involvement in the adventures of others.
  8. Well, that's a confusing pick. Not necessarily wrong -- just surprising to see it in round 3.
  9. I'd have some interest in Sirota depending on what he's asking for. But I sincerely doubt the underslot savings on Mathis are anywhere near enough to make that viable.
  10. I don't see the point of an underslot in a draft like this.
  11. Rainer off the board. Works for me -- Cubs probably weren't in on a HS SS anyway.
  12. Doesn't seem like a huge reach. Wonder what kind of underslot he's getting.
  13. With the teams in front of us, I don't see that happening.
  14. Seems like we're exactly where people thought we'd be after 7 picks. But very few of those first 7 picks went where people expected.
  15. No. Keep doing it. Just put it in spoiler tags.
  16. FFS Manfred, shut up and let teams pick.
  17. Bazzana is listed #1 on the MLB Draft tracker. [Not as a pick, but as they rank prospects.] Am I imagining it, or was he lower earlier?
  18. Thanks for the quick primer, fellas. I look forward to us redrafting Hayden Simpson.
  19. So for those of us who haven't had the time to pay much attention to the draft this year... I understand it's supposed to be a relatively weak crop. Are there clear tiers? What are some of the best names we could realistically hope for?
  20. I can't wait to see our catcher make four big bunny hops before trying to throw out a guy stealing second.
  21. Swanson has put up 5.9 fWAR as a Cub. How to value each fWAR is always in a bit of flux -- subject to the whims of the market, inflation, etc... But $8M per is still a pretty conservative estimate. So Swanson has been worth something like $47M so far. If he's paid out at $52M by the end of the year, he's roughly "on pace" to provide the value we are supposed to get. However, given the aging curve, the reality is that "on pace" is behind -- you expect to get more from people early in the contract and little later on. He was on track with that last year, putting up north of 4.5 fWAR and roughly $35M in value. TL;DR: Swanson was worth way more than his contract last season. He's likely to rack up enough value the rest of this season as to say he hasn't truly disappointed the contract yet. But if he doesn't bounce back to previously established levels next year, the odds of him living up to the contract are low.
  22. Yup. All those warts are precisely why he might be available for a guy like Tauchman. The Mets have Nimmo and Bader in LF and CF, respectively. Starling Marte is their RF, but he's out another few weeks at least. Their bench sucks -- they've even played Ben Gamel this season. The Mets desperately need a guy like Tauchman who can start in RF for a few weeks and then move over to a 4th OF role. Meanwhile, the Cubs 3B are hitting .209/.303/.359 this season with the worst defense in baseball. We wouldn't lose anything by grabbing Baty and trying to revamp the swing. Heck, his .229/.306/.327 line is pretty close to the production we're already getting.
