  1. Given that we've been calling him "Murton" in this thread, I think he needs a nickname. Suggestions? The only thing my uncreative and severely medicated brain can come up with right now is the Red Egghead.
  2. But at the same time, you have to figure that Aramis will hit. Pierre should hit a little better. Jones I'm not sure about. But a drop off from Barrett will be nullified by an increase in production from Aramis. Maddux will have his poor outings but I think he'll be better this year. And I see no reason why the bullpen would have a significant drop off. They will have some bad outings, but at the end of the season I expect our bullpen to be the best and most consistent part of our team. I agree that the drop off from Barrett will be offset by an improvement from Aramis. But the offense has been performing at a level that I don't think we should expect for the rest of the season. After 10 games the offense is averaging 6 runs per game, which is at least a run higher than what we should be realistically expecting them to score over 162 games. I'm still pleasantly surprised by what they've done, but don't expect it to continue at the level it has. Given the state of the starting pitching, I hope you're correct about the bullpen. Eyre's outing today was another good effort that suggest the bullpen will be improved over last year.
  3. What I've liked best about the season so far: 1) Maddux: If he keeps the ball in the ballpark he'll have a great year 2) The offense: It's been very productive even while three of the eight have struggled - Pierre, Jones, and Aramis 3) The offense: It's been strong enough to carry us through some weak pitching performances 4) The bullpen: Aside from some one-off disasters (Ohman comes to mind), its looked very good. Eyre, Dempster, Howry, and Williamson have combined for 22 and 2/3 innings in which they have allowed 21 baserunners, struck out 21, given up 1 home run, and have given up 2 earned runs. 5) Derrek and Barret: 44 total bases between them in 9 games, and Derrek already has 10 walks. I don't think each of these five will continue at the same level as they have through 9 games, but if the trends stay the same it will be a great year.
  4. Similar to what some basketball fans have suggested for the Olympics - that whoever wins the championship that year goes and competes against the foreign teams.
  5. I'm 5'8" and 160, about the size of Ichiro. I'll take RF.
  6. Never underestimate the performance of an athlete in a contract year. In all seriousness Maddux's value the past two years has been his ability to be an average pitcher that doesn't get injured. I'd love to see him get his ERA back down to the low to mid 3's while still eating up 200 innings. I still don't see any reason for bringing him back next year unless he's willing to take $5M.
  7. Agreed. I look at his motion and think he's a Tommy John surgery waiting to happen.
  8. Reached base all four times he was up, and he used his speed to: - Stretch that first single into a double - Leg out that infield single - Go from first to third on Mabry's single in the seventh He's like the anti-Moises Alou. I understand there's a lot of debate about the value of speed and baserunning on this board, but I think we can all admit it's great to see those things happen in-game.
  9. He pitched pretty well through the fourth. He missed the outside corner against Rolen and paid for it, but aside from that he looked pretty solid. I think he retired 9 straight from them on.
  10. That's what I figured. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else.
  11. Anyone know? I know he was struggling in the fifth, but he was only at 65 pitches.
  12. Judging by the look on his face when he was running the bases, it look like he needed that. Nice reaction by the fans as well.
  13. He had a pretty good game today behind the plate as well. That steal to Rolen was tough, but aside from that he did his job on defensive. The GS caused me to scream into the phone while I was trying to book a hotel.
  14. My view is that the second part of that statement wasn't true before 2003. Prior to that fans were more supportive of players who weren't producing. I couldn't imagine LaTroy or Corey or Jacque getting the degree of boos they got before 2003. I'm not sure if after 2003 the expectation for success are much higher, or if that season brought in new group of fans, or something else, but the change is noticable. Snoodmonger said that booing was the easiest way to make us look like whiny a-holes. I completely agree, and since 2003 it looks like we're inching toward that direction.
  15. I have nothing to back this up but pure speculation, but I suspect this is true. I wonder if some of his injuries would be something that most other pitchers would play through.
  16. As it relates to the Cubs, any competent manager who knew the basics of the position should have been able to pull together winning season from the talent and health we had in 2003 and 2004. As much as I don't like Ozzie Guillen, I believe he's right when he says that managers can do a lot to reduce a team's success, but not much to improve a team's success (obviously said in so many words, though).

    Bonds

Oh, I agree. I think a fan who throws something at a fan should be banned from that ballpark, permenantly. Especially if it's a Super Twinkie thrown down to Lance Berkman, who proceeds to hit a homerun the inning after consuming said Super Twinkie. That alone made me wish Berkman played for the Cubs.

    Bonds

Selig must really be hoping he hits 714 and 715 in San Francisco.
  19. Last night I had a dream that I was in the Cubs clubhouse, and I was talking to Barrett and Ronny. While we were talking about how the White Sox won it last year, I looked up and saw Kerry walking by with ice on his shoulder. Randomly Dawson was walking in the other direction in full uniform, that big 8 sticking out on his back. I think I'm ready for Opening Day.
  20. I'll second that. Maddux and his sustainable 220 IP+ per season vs Pedro's minor injury-plagued seasons though is a different debate.
  21. Pierre-Walker at the top of the lineup will be great, especially if Pierre returns to his pre-2005 form.
  22. If Ronny and Neifi have the offensive and defensive performances you suggest, it would be obvious that Neifi belongs in the lineup over Ronny. I think what people who are in favor of Ronny believe that his weak spring training numbers don't represent what his actual performance will be in the regular season. ~20 games in spring training don't showcase someone's performance as much as 65 games in AAA and an entire winter league.
  23. He's had a tough spring, but he deserves the starting nod and deserves it for more than a month for two reasons. 1) His offensive struggles in ST have occured in less than 60 PAs. He had a great year in Iowa last year, and was ROY in Venezuela's Winter League. A year of solid performance should trump a month of spring training struggles. 2) He's not Neifi. Basically the other option at short is inept at the plate.
  24. The Tribune hasn't done or said anything to indicate that they are considering selling the Cubs. Some of the Tribune's investors have recommended that they do to focus on selling newspapers and running TV stations, but going by the Tribune's word expect the Cubs in their ownership.
