  1. Check out what ATL paid last year for Hudson and you should get a good idea... So...Hill, Patterson and Wuertz in place of Meyer, Charles Thomas and Cruz? Where do I sign? Yours and Hendry's would be the only signature on THAT paper. I'll sign.
  2. Van Dyck's update in the Trib: Link By Dave van Dyck Tribune staff reporter December 29, 2005, 10:42 PM CST
  3. Anyone see the new Van Dyck article in the Trib? Nothing real new other than what we've learned about Tejada's most recent comments. Just his insight on the whole thing... http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-051229tejada,1,5422449.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines
  4. A 1 year contract with Wilson would be a bad thing. Murton should put up equal or better numbers at a fraction of the cost. I think you mean Murton could put up equal numbers at a fraction of the cost. There's no guarantee that a guy with success in limited at bats will recapture that same success in his first 500 at bat season. It's just as likely that he hits .250 this year.
  5. Consider the source. I'm not going to worry about this one. I've noticed their accuracy has increased quite a bit lately.
  6. Would you rather trade Prior??? That is the main idea behind this ridiculous theory! If it meant getting Tejada at the cost of replacing Murton with Burnitz, would you then be in favor of making a deal with Orioles. Also, take into consideration my comment that Murton is no guarantee to be productive over the course of a full season. That can't be rejected out of hand.

  8. Other average teams got lucky why can't we! Also despite the .251 avg Rdriguez slugged .530 with 31 HR. His OBP was a below average at .334, but thats certianly better than Jones and most likey Burnitz Also Johnson hit .280 .335 .352 Comparable to what we could expect from Pierre (a little less OBP) Then you throw in Sammy's ridiculous stats and even that OF blows away one of Pierre/Jones/Burnitz The point is an above average outfield does not a World Championship make. Pitching and being 'strong up the middle' seems to be the championship rhetoric of the past 5-10 years.
  9. Didn't we make the playoffs with an outfield of Sosa, H. Rodriguez and Lance Johnson? That wasn't exactly a stellar outfield outside of Sosa's 'steroid era' power numbers. HRod batted .251. The 2005 White Sox outfield last year was average at best as well.
  10. Think about the infield. Now remember that Murton is not a mortal lock to put up .270/25/90. The move improves the team and doesn't hurt the integrity of the pitching staff.
  11. If he still wants to be a Cub it could happen today. All he has to do is give his permission to the Orioles.
  12. With the signing of Burnitz to the O's earlier got my wheels turning. What if the O's are signing Burnitz (out-of-nowhere, I might add & with no other suiters bidding apparently) with the intention of trading him back to the Cubs on the condition that the Cubs include Murton in the Tejada deal. I think that the Cubs would be offering Murton, Pie and Hill for Tejada and a non-Bedarek SP prospect so that all sides can be happy. Purely speculation on my part, but wouldn't it make sense if neither team wants to part with their best pitcher? The Cubs would much rather settle for one of their best clubhouse guys in Burnitz than to have to deal Zambrano or Prior, so would this be more palatable for you guys? EDIT: The idea is that in order to follow MLB rules, the O's would have to sign and trade Burnitz (with his permission). Doesn't it seem a Cublike move? Not that I'm against it, or any move that means we keep Prior and Z...
  13. I'll take Greg Maddux for $9 Million, Alex. I'll take Jon Garland over Mr. #5 starter anyday. Maddux's 3-year pre-retirement/retirement campaign with the Cubs has really disappointed me. I wonder if he will come into camp with another 15 lbs. this spring. The day Maddux takes one for the team and finishes what he started is the day I'll respect him again. This HOF and supposed "team-guy" begs out of more games than anyone in the league and works less than anyone on this team. Pop Quiz: Who faced the most batters for the Cubs in '04 and '05? Answer: Greg "beg out" Maddux. Garland's 3 previous seasons before last year weren't as good as Maddux's '05. Maddux is better quality than a #5 starter. That's assuming you generously peg a #5 starter as league average. The point is Maddux doesn't care. He's out-of-shape and has one foot out the door. The point is he could be so much better if he still wanted to work at it. Maddux gets by on the knowledge he's attained over the years and has very little physical talent left. He's made no adjustments over the past few years and no better than a fifth starter on a contending team. In short he stinks for 50-60% of the year and gets paid like a #1-2 starter. I know he's a legend and noone has a bad thing to say about him. But I said it. I think he's the biggest 'me' guy on the team. So much for the guy who'd help Wood and Prior better pitchers. They were better before Maddux joined the Cubs.
  14. The Cubs have more to hate than the WS.

  16. When the search tool is back up and running, I'm really starting to think that we need to document the number of imminent deals that Levine has discussed that didn't come through. He's not a particularly reliable source, though he does give us some fuel for the hot stove (albeit the dried cow dung variety). He's generated at least two enoormous threads on this bd. since May (Dunn and Tejada). I guess what irritates me the most is he never seems to get called out by the station (or anyone else) for these inaccurate reports, and/or never seems to explain himself when they turn out to be inaccurate. This may be exactly what the station wants, since the bottom line is generating listeners and making money. Just too many people fall for such stories. I'm pretty sure Silverman has called him to task on numerous occasions.
  17. Prior's walk year is three seasons away. It would seem premature to trade him now based on the suspicion he'd walk 3 years from now. As others have noted, Z's walk year is two season away and Boras is his agent. The likelihood that he will test free agency sooner seems higher. I still wouldn't trade either unless the return blew me out of the water and I was dead certain neither was interested in staying. I'd be more concerned with that issue about trading for Tejada, who -- if traded -- will be able to demand a trade after one season. Point well taken. May be one of them has to go and JH thinks he has a better shot w/ Z and Boras. I dunno - just speculating. When JH contemplates these moves, I find it most interesting to try and understand what his thinking is. In this case - as I noted above - I think it may be a last ditch effort by a desperate man. I think that Prior's involvement in this deal was part of a 'bait and switch' gone wrong. I think he wanted to use him as a conversation starter, much like I do with my fantasy football team every year to get the attention of other GM's only to work your way down the ranks with package deals. I could be wrong, however I have won more fantasy championships (2) in the last two years than the Cubs have in the last 97 years (But I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night FWIW).
  18. Prior will win at LEAST 2 Cy's in Baltimore. At least. Leave it to Hendry to make the rotation a strength, then make it a glaring weakness at the expense of a 30 year old shortstop on the downturn. Am I the only one that is curious what Prior would do with Leo Mazzone as his pitching coach. I will be interested to see what Baltimores young staff does with that guru teaching them the force. Yes, just like I'm curious to see if my girlfriend would like to sleep with other chicks. But I'm not willing make her a lesbian.
  19. Do we even know what the 'budget' is? By this I mean the actual amount that the Cubs are willing to spend on 'payroll' before the start of the 2006 season. I see a lot of people referring to the amount spent thus far the 'budget'. That is the current 'payroll' figure. As is the case with most any company, budgets are subject to revisions based on the success or failure during a given period of time. Basically what this means is that if the Cubs are going great through June/July and the Cubs see that their investment is worth 'stretching' the original proposed budget, they will simply revise it in order to put them in a better position to capitalize on new opportunities, such as a world championship run.
  20. ...God forbid the Cubs ever decided to be proactive rather than their usual reactive selves.
  21. Prior was healthy for the rest of the season when his pitching was very mediocre. MLB is prehistoric sometimes when it comes to change. I read a lot about the numerous ways you can repair a pitchers arm without a scapel in Mike Lupica's book "Wild Pitch". Guys like Dr. James Andrews make a killing off of these surgeries because players never investigate other means of treatment. (The book was a work of fiction however the treatments and techniques used in it were very much real.)
  22. Man, I'll tell you what - - This team, as it stands right now, hasn't looked better. I sure wouldn't mind standing pat. ---Maybe that's all part of Hendry - I mean Zod's devious plan--- Rather than to trade our top prospects for real stars, he's scaring us with moves we'd hate to do - to make us happy with the team as currently assembled. Bravo Mr. Hendry! Bravo! Well played General!
  23. are you talking about his achilles injury? The elbow injury was simultaneous with the achilles injury. The elbow injury was speculation from a reporter in NJ. The achilles injury is what kept him off the mound. I think you have it backwards; the elbow issue was the real problem. How do you know that? Do you have insider info? The achilles injury is what kept Prior out. They originally called it an achilles injury. Then we found out about the elbow later. Doesn't matter at this point, really. chicken/egg
  24. JH needs to walk away from this one and see what he can get for Pie and/or Hill. If he's gonna get crazy, he might as well get crazy down on the farm with his prospects.
