  1. Just an FYI Sorry to post it so late in the interview, it came on when I was in the shower.
  2. I remember back a couple years ago when a segment of fans were dead set agains trading Patterson for Andruw Jones. That's exactly why I'll be open to trade Pie if the right veteran becomes available.
  3. Lee was much better in 2005, but for their careers, Dunn has looked better. Based on age, I would probably prefer Dunn as well. For the record, there is no tangible way to differentiate players as difference makers and non-difference makers unless one guy so obviously stinks and the other is a world-beater all-star. When you have two above average players you can't say one is more of a difference maker than the other. It's completely intangible and incalculable.
  4. I think you're getting the context wrong here. I think what I meant was 'greatest' hitters. What I was getting at is people will argue he's over-rated and people will argue that he's under-rated. Then people back it with statistics and the people who don't like stats freak out and call out the stat guys or visa versa. The point is this: every time the name 'Adam Dunn' is even whispered around here it turns into a 45 page thread. Nothing's happening. Nothing's going to happen, so it's all moot. Stop the vicious cycle of Dunn->Stats->Endless Argument while we're still young. No matter what anyone says, the two sides are never going to agree - and Dunn will not be a Cub in 2006. That much is obvious.
  5. Wow, I had a feeling this would be a long thread. To say Dunn is coveted by a segment of Cubs fans (myself included - within reason) is the understatement of the century. Dunn's not coming here, not now and most likely not at the deadline. He doesn't stink and he's not among the games "greatest" hitters. At least not yet. We should really let sleeping dogs lie until there's any indication the Cubs feel they need a new left-fielder.
  6. Jake Fox was brought up as an extra catcher for Spring Training.
  7. I don't know why he'd sign a 3-year contract worth $27 Million. He can wait another year after this season and get a contract at least as good as AJ Burnett's 5-year $55 Million contract. He's probably going to get about $8 Million in arbitration money next year, so signing a light 3 year deal wouldn't be such a great idea.
  8. Thanks, Paul Sullivan just said that it was going to be ready in 2007 on Murph's show. I was under the impression that it would be ready this year until I heard him say it.
  9. Okay, someone refresh my memory here...If the Cardinals played their last home game at Busch in October 2005 and the new stadium won't be ready until 2007, then where are they supposed to play in 2006? I'm obviously missing something here...
  10. The thing I like about this team is that besides Lee and Jones, there aren't very many strikeouts in the lineup. Walker, Pierre and Barrett are some of the toughest guys to strike out at their position. Murton and Cedeno both seem like patient and smart hitters. And Ramirez's strike out totals have really improved over the past few years. All JH really had to do was get a well rounded hitter for RF and this would be a pretty fiesty lineup.
  11. Hendry's done dealing for now. If he's going to go after Dunn it will be in June or July. But really the only way he'll do it is if Murton sucks bad.
  12. Bleacher tickets actually received a minimal price increase this season... last year they were $38 for prime dates. They were only twenty bucks a few years ago. But it's a good thing they've made use of all that extra money.
  13. I'm not sure, but I think you've misinterpreted the quotes. It sounds to me like he's saying 'I better get in shape so I can get another contract.' The second quote never insinuates that he's too fat to fit the jersey. I understand the fact that he hasn't come right out and said that he's only getting in shape to get paid again, however, why is he waiting until now to do it? He's spent two years dragging ass for the Cubs, begging out of games, and now that his contract is up he wants to get back into shape??? Fine. I hope he's in great shape and helps us go to the playoffs. I hope he wins 15-20 games and recaptures past glory. But let me be the first to say no matter how well he does in 2006, he won't deserve a contract worth more than $5 Million dollars for more than a year. He'll just regress back to fat-out of shape Greg so you'd have to pay him for the type of numbers he put up in 2005.
  14. “I just told my wife (Kathy) yesterday that I need to have a good year so someone will give me a job and I can play again next year." Gee, thanks Greg. Way to get in shape in time to get your next payday. How thoughtful. What a team guy.
  15. He's won 15 games and had an ERA in the low 4's in his woman body the last couple years. If he's in shape, which he had better be, he should be capable of at least 15 wins and an ERA in the middle to high 3's. He owes it to his teammates to get into shape, otherwise he's been stealing $24 Million dollars to take his early retirement on the way to Cooperstown.
  16. There are a lot of names there, but how many of them can you expect to produce at or above the level of Williams? Zambrano, yes; Prior, yes; Wood, if healthy; Maddux, maybe but not likely IMO. They may have a lot of arms to throw out there, but I don't think many of them are better then Williams. Once you factor in his age and price, I think he's very valuable to the Cubs. I don't know if they see it that way though. I think a better way to look at this would be to say, 'Since the Cubs have a logjam of verteran starters, does it seem likely that they would deal from their youth (Hill, Guzman, etc.) at the trade deadline for a valuable asset?' I don't think Williams has a ton of value on the trade market at this point. I think he could be a pretty good starting pitcher, but contending teams aren't desparate for starting pitching just yet. His value will increase when other teams with a shot at postseason have a crucial loss in their rotation.
  17. For Abreu and Gavin Floyd, they could ask for Murton, Pie and Jerome Williams. They could have guys to play for right now and build for the future.
  18. I heard that Todd slept with Ryn- Okay, bad joke.
  19. Can someone remind me why the H they traded Renteria in the first place? Was it to end up with CoCo Crisp? Geez, I don't know about all that. Something must have fallen apart after they picked up Marte.
  20. I think they want Hairston to have a chance to make them look even better in the Sosa trade. Walker seems like a very cool guy by all accounts. I've seen him twice in public (he had the same blockbuster, and we saw him in Mesa) and obviously he's not going to be a total jerk in public, but he seemed like quite the family man. He took his family out the same night that he got injured and missed a few games. Maybe the Cubs brass thought he was milking it...I don't really know. But I saw him there for about twenty minutes and from what I could tell he seemed like a genuine good guy.
  21. Let the record show, the Score had Jerry on a couple hours ago to talk about the contract. voice>
  22. Well, it's a good thing we don't have to release Wuertz. I don't think he stinks, I just think he's on the bubble right now and that Williamson will be better. Wuertz makes for good depth, and if needed can step in. He won't have any value in a trade however. Let's all just be content with the fact that we have great bullpen depth right now and that, as someone posted earlier, since there's no such thing as a healthy cubs roster - count on him as good depth.
  23. Even when Williamson was giving up the runs his K and BB rates were awesome. He wasn't giving up the HR either, so I'm optomistic as well. I think that his upside to helping a contender is way higher than the other two. I just couldn't trust either in the stretch run of a playoff run.
  24. I was only stating that if, given a choice, I'd rather let Wuertz or Novoa (Novoa sooner than Wuertz) rather than to trade Williamson for a near-worthless prospect. Williamson can be a shut-down middle-to-setup reliever and I just don't see that kind of ceiling for Novoa or Wuertz - two pitchers who will not be on a fully-healthy Cubs pitching roster.
  25. Williamson is going to be a key player in the Cubs pen, based on the way he finished 2005. His k/9 and bb/k were pretty outstanding. With that said, I have zero confidence in Novoa or Wuertz out of the pen. One of them is going down to AAA when Wood or Miller comes of the DL. I'd rather outright release one of those two than trade Williamson for a nothing prospect at this point.
