  1. I rub it on my nose when I don't have a floppy-enough hat to wear.
  2. I feel so much better knowing he only has a 5.54 era in the first inning. That's one way to look at it. Another is to say that in 18 of 26 starts, he's gone through the first inning unscathed. And until the last five starts, it was 17 of 21. Perhaps people are dwelling on a recent string of starts instead of something that is a persistent issue. Prior's my guy. Prior skirts with danger regularly in his first inning. The pitch number splits show that he's hit more earlier on. And he coughs up the walks more early on. I would think that's a combo of teams with a not-swing strategy early-on and Prior not always hitting his spots early-on. He often has a runners-on-base-hiccup.
  3. I worry about Duke against this lineup. I like Maddux against Pittsburgh this time of year. I just hope the Cubs can score some runs. I know a lot of people don't care, but I think Maddux's streak is one of the coolest streaks in baseball and I want to see it continue. GO CUBS!
  4. I was at a game this summer and my girlfriend, who is a redhead w/very fair skin forgot to bring sunscreen. Around the 5th inning you could see her turning bright red so I went to get her some sunscreen...$15.00!!! It was for a small bottle also. I know everything is expensive there but 1 small bottle of sunscreen>2 oldstyles, thats just not right. Also I hope they don't go shirtless like Harry used too. :-s The beauty of the bleachers is that it's a cooperative enterprise. If you need the sunscreen, yell it out. I guarantee that someone around you will be willing to trade some suitable sunscreen for less than $15. Maybe for free, or maybe for food/beverage. Of course, it's good to plan ahead of time. I'm just saying, if you sit in the bleachers and you need something like sunscreen, just say so and see what offers you get. :D
  5. 1) dress comfortably 2) bring your own food or get a dog from the kosher stand on the middle level ... there's no other edible food in the bleachers IMO 3) maintain a good sense of humor ... which I'm sure Len will. :D
  6. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/gameday/mugshots/435043.jpg Zach Duke, 6-2, 1.94 vs. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/gameday/mugshots/118120.jpg Greg Maddux, 13-13, 4.14 Get that win, Maddux. Just get it.
  7. Barring unforeseen circumstances, final results will be posted Oct. 3. :)
  8. Must be nervewracking to be a baserunner with him behind the plate.
  9. Besides, they'd have to kill Zambrano to make him miss a start. I've liked your idea for a while; too bad there's no one in place to implement such a common-sense approach.
  10. That's really great -- looking forward to it! :)
  11. Clash of the Titans! http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/gameday/mugshots/434643.jpg Wandy Rodriguez (10-8, 5.43) vs. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/gameday/mugshots/121556.jpg Glendon Rusch (7-8, 4.59) Too bad they didn't have more of those sweet 2:20 starts earlier this season. Final Cubs homestand of 2005.
  12. No, it wasn't [barrett's defense wasn't really that bad]. But there's something going on with Barrett and the pitching staff. I don't know what it is, but I'm curious as to what it is. Call it Gossip and call me a Maven. It's pretty obvious at this point that Prior prefers not to throw to Barrett. And I've never heard the pitchers rave about Barrett the way they rave about Blanco. The ones who don't rave are the rooks. Barrett in the past has volunteered for blame, and if you volunteer for it, you'll get it. That may be part of it. If Wood actually can pitch 200 decent innings next year -- and patterns hold true -- he'll probably pitch to Barrett. That'll help Michael in the worthless CERA run. Don't know if it will get him in good with the rest of the pitching staff, though.
  13. I wonder why Kyle Aselton (Beloit) isn't showing up on MiLB anymore as the MWL ERA leader/winner (2.49, 112 IPs) -- and doesn't seem to be showing up at all in the league-wide pitching stats. I believe he started one of the playoff games and pitched extremely well, though Beloit didn't advance.
  14. A belated but sincere congrats to the DJaxx on a great season. Sorry they couldn't pull off that last series, but it was fun to listen to them all season long. :)
  15. Sorry for the belated reply. If a game thread isn't up the day of the game, anyone can feel free to start it. I'm going to be a bit scarce online for the next week or so. People know the order; any of the online mods can answer any questions that arise; so carry on! :D
  16. ARGH. Seems now unlikely I'm driving down. I'll be listening in and cheering vigorously, though. GO JAXX!
  17. Here's the story. Here's the schedule.
  18. I hope so, now that my computer is fixed! Are you going to Jackson? If the weather isn't horrible tomorrow, yes! :D
  19. So he forgot how to play baseball until next year because he was injured and is a Cub he'll be injured again next year when the cycle starts all over again he's never going to pitch well again, since if he's not over his injuries by now, he never will be and he can't manufacture a third pitch out of thin air. Are those not direct quotes? But then you say he's not washed up? All of that adds up to a "notch down" in your book? O-KAY then. Generous grading scale you have, indeed. If I were going to argue those points, I'd argue he's over and done with. TRADE HIM. Of course, I don't think he is. I wouldn't scream over trading him in a very good deal, but I don't know that I trust the Cubs to strike that deal. I'll still follow him.
  20. Heard a rumor that video may be available for the game! :D I'd check milb.com's front page tomorrow.
  21. Dusty must be right ... they just didn't the book on him back then.
  22. He had a compression fracture in his pitching elbow. Maybe that had an impact on his pitching. He's certainly not pitching as well as he has in the past (2003). He's also still usually able to make adjustments within a game, but the first inning of games has just killed him recently. I'm willing to consider causes. Whether he gets a pass from you for any reason is obviously up to you. Yeah, now you're just making excuses. If he's not healthy enough to pitch, then he shouldn't pitch. It's been plenty of time since that injury. If he's not over it by now, he never will be. I consider causes too. Want to know what 'causes' Mark to give up runs? Lack of pitch variety. All the rationalization in the world can't manufacture a third pitch out of thin air. so what was his third pitch in 2003??? Ha ha, IG You're welcome to your take, Soul. I'm welcome not to agree with it ... which I don't. Prior's not sharp right now. Still not ready to call him washed up just yet.
  23. Sounds like Ribbee and Big Z have a lot in common.
