  1. That's not accurate. They were 9th in '05, 7th in '04, 11th in '03, and 12th in '02. (I don't recall when Hendry started) This is the post I was talking about. I have no idea if it's accurate or not. Maybe there is some confusion with TOP 5 in general. Top 5 in MLB, top 5 in the NL? The Cubs have increased payroll by 30m over the last 5 years while removing themselves from their biggest contract (Sosa), and they are coming off a losing season to show for it. Not good whether they were top 5 or not.
  2. That's about how I would sound if asked to write summary on the Cubs offseason. I think it's still a bit premature to write a summary since the offseason isn't over, but the grade up to this point is pretty accurate.
  3. Hendry had the cash and the resources to improve the offense and the pitching, not just one or the other.
  4. he's looking for an explanation that isn't shrouded cliche. i'm sure he'll acknowledge a decent answer to his question if that answer is offered. Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I didn't realize how cryptic this guy was. Not to mention how pointless it would actually be to post anything useful. Transmogrified Tiger is formerly CPatterson20. He gives his opinion more often than most. What's with the personal attack?
  5. He Gawn!
  6. Only 14 games next year? If we play the Bucs, where and when? You don't have them listed.
  7. THE HORN!!!!!!!!
  8. I'm doing the SD WBC also, but I'll be in Vegas from March 21-26.
  9. I'd attempt to trade Jones for a veteran sure handed Tight End. With Petersen and Benson, I think the running back situation will be just fine with this new found passing game. Let them battle it out for the starting job and find a veteran 3rd down back to add to the mix. The receiver corps looks pretty good to me right now also if Bradley comes back fully healthy. If a good veteran can't be picked up, take the best available TE with the first pick. I doubt Pope is still available at our pick, but if he is, it's a no brainer. We could definitely use a defensive back or two in this draft, but I'd probably focus the 2nd pick on an offensive lineman. Would the Bears consider trading up in the draft to make sure they could get Pope? Give Grossman a few more sure handed receivers (TE and 3rd down back) and build up the offensive line and the defense will be quite pleased they won't have to do it all themselves next year.
  10. Not sure about Florida, but I recall the Mets having a really horrible defensive outfield back in like 2002. You could probably study that. Maybe compare that team to the Mets team of 2005 that had both Cameron and Beltran in the outfield. Of course, pitching has a lot to do with the hit factor as well, so I don't know how you really perform a study that would have any accuracy. A weak infield defense probably factors in as well.
  11. 63 pages! I'm certainly not going to read through all of them, so I'll just give my summary. Overall, good game by the Bears. They really dropped the ball in regards to respecting Steve Smith's game, but other than Smith running all over them, they played pretty solid. Stop Smith and the Bears win this game. I was very disappointed with the 2nd Smith touchdown. Why was Thompson single covering him? It's that kind of poor judgment that cost the Bears this game. The only other part of this game I'm upset with is Maynard's inability to punt the ball. I felt he did an awesome job all season, then just completely botched the field position in this game. I thought Grossman did a pretty good job overall. I was disappointed that he decided to show his inexperience on 4th and 2 to basically end the game. He looked totally panicked on that play. It was a fun season and I look forward to next year. I hope our first pick in the draft will be a tight end. Or at least pick one up in free agency that can get open more than Clark does. Berrian looked like a stud receiver yesterday! He made several great catches.
  12. Yes, let's all please calm down in here.
  13. Why would you want to shut them up? If the truth is ugly, so be it. Better to let the facts be known than have a permanent cloud of suspicion hanging over the sport. I didn't necessarily say I wanted them to be shut up. I asked how MLB would do it considering the damage that could be done if these stories end up being the front page headlines in the heart of baseball season.
  14. By listing the OBP's for all the years Dusty was the manager of the Giants, I do have to ask what happened? Take a look at the 2000 San Francisco Giants. Take out Russ Davis and his 180 at bats, and there wasn't one single other player on that team that had an OBP below .333 (excluding people with less than 15 at bats and pitchers). 5 of the 8 starters were .357+. 3 of them were over .400. Only Bill Mueller was below .340. That Giants team walked almost 300 more times than the Cubs did last year. What happened???????????????????????????????????? That Giants team scored 925 runs in 2000. Why can't we have a team that scores that often? Walks sure don't look like they were clogging bases back then.
  15. I don't think we've even scraped the surface of ballplayers making comments like this. Once the 1999 guys who took or were offered have all retired, comments like this one could create a real mess of MLB for their lame stance on performance enhancing drugs. How will MLB shut these players up? Could they add a clause to the terms of their pension that they never speak of other players and how it relates to steroids? This could get real ugly.
  16. We might need Fred for this answer, but I would say yes, there is more contact made at Coors. Using Preston Wilson as an example since he was a guy who played somewhere else before Colorado, and somewhere since Colorado, he has: his highest AVG as a Rocky, highest HR, highest Doubles, etc... He actually had 80 XBH's one year, which will typically make teams really want you on the team if you played anywhere other than Colorado. His second highest total is 69 in 5 more at bats. He had 605 at bats in 2000 with 187 K's. His full year in Colorado, he had 600 at bats and 139 K's. He topped that total last year with 148 in only 520 at bats. I'm sure you can probably find more players to compare, but he was the first one I thought of. I think Sammy could actually stretch his career in Colorado, but the weather may not to his liking all that much.
  17. Are you serious? I don't have copies of direct quotes, but Dusty is full of "over the line" material, starting with.... Walks clog the bases...... Dark skinned players can handle playing in the sun much better day in and day out.... This thread could get real long if someone wanted to put Dustyisms in here from the past 3 years. He says stuff that's over the line practically every day.
  18. He may end up in a platoon no matter where he ends up, including Tampa. Tampa has Crawford, Baldelli and Gomes in the outfield, and Travis Lee and Burroughs in the infield corners. That does leave DH, but when Tampa trades Lugo to Boston for Marte, Burroughs will probably platoon at DH with Gomes. Other names that are still possibilities for the outfield also are Gathright, Delmon Young, and BJ Upton. Huff is probably as good as gone from Tampa prior to the season. And I actually like what Tampa is doing with the team. If they can get Marte and a stud pitching prospect from Boston for Lugo and Gathright, and then get another starter for Huff, they'll have a pretty good team this year.
  19. Hah! You beat me to it. I guess I was wrong about him getting his appointment in. I'm not sure if it falls under the category of "classy" if you put a guy in the awkward position of worrying about someone else's physical problems instead of your own. :-k
  20. Never understood the Jose Castillo love. I thought Freddy Sanchez, Bobby Hill and Mack-o-wack were all better options offensively. His 50 HR's over the course of his minor league career in 2200 at bats doesn't bode well for 20 HR seasons.
  21. I'd lump Gathright in that group as well. If he improves on his walk rate at the major league level, he will be a speedy lead off hitter with a respectable OBP and virtually no power.
  22. Actually, I was looking for an angle that went against the grain of all the speculation around steroids. This is a topic that will likely be discussed for many years. The drop off in production for any player will automatically beg the question of whether steroids played a part. I don't know. We may never know.
  23. Didn't McGuire fall off as quickly? Of course, steroids is a hot topic with him as well. :D
  24. Didn't he already pass that point in his career in his last season here in Chicago ? He should have stopped right after we lost against the Marlins - he had some huge homers and good games. But I guess this really shows he was only playing for himself afterall..... Come on, after the shots he was hitting in the 03 playoffs, you didn't honestly think he was going to decline as much as he did in 04. Actually, I still held out hope that he could improve on those numbers. I wonder how much that beaning had to do with his decline? I always felt like he moved away from the plate from that point forward and could no longer drive that outside pitch, or even hit it for that matter. In fact, opposing pitchers exploited the fact he coudn't reach the outside pitch. He never made the adjustment and his offense has been in decline ever since. Maybe that isn't it at all. I brought up this topic once before, and one of our members went back and watched video from pre-decline and said it didn't appear as though he did move back, and that he always stood that far back. Maybe the combination of a slowing bat speed and pitchers finding that out pitch by throwing outside required an adjustment, one Sammy refused to make.
  25. We'll be interested to hear these stories. In the meantime..... Lugo at 5m >>>>Furcal at 13m or even at 10m (Cubs offer) Lugo at 5m = Furcal at 5m To me, they are practically the same player. It wouldn't have hurt my feelings if Hendry traded for Lugo and spent the big bucks on Giles in RF. Lugo/Giles>>>>>>>>>>>>Furcal/Jones Considering what Tampa wants for Lugo and that we already gave up too much to get Pierre, I think I'd rather stick with Walker at 2nd.
