  1. Why bother? A move like that is just re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. :titanic:
  2. The Cubs also don't scout those kinds of players. They want toolsy guys, not guys who can hit really well. The closest thing they have to a pure hitter like Gwynn and Grace is Murton, who they got from the Red Sox in a trade. What are they doing with Murton? Telling him he's too patient at the plate. What is this advice doing to his offensive production. Making him a below average outfielder.
  3. I hope tomorrow's line up looks like this: Pierre Neifi Bynum Blanco Womack Mabry Jones Ramirez These guys need to be run out of town. A line up like that ought to do the trick. This team will not be better until this front office is gone. Until they are gone, I hope they continue running Neifi out there in the 2 spot. Dusty's doing it out of spite, and if the front office is going to sit there and lap it up, they deserve it.

I'm staying as far away from this thread as I possibly can. But, spare the insults boys....and girls?
  5. Maybe someone needs to label the line up card with "TOP" in big, bright letters. I don't care, though. He wants to run that line up out there, I have no problems laughing at the end result. You have to honestly be filling out the line up card out of spite to run that line up out there as often as he does.
  6. That's basically what the Cubs have right now. A bunch of guys that don't strike out that much. Neifi Perez rarely strikes out. The Reds have K'd 140 more times than the Cubs, and I'll take their offense over the Cubs all day long.
  7. Well, any .400 OBP guy walks often, that's part of what's behind the whole idea. So I'm not sure where you're going with this... :-k I think he means Ted Williams. I mean, thats the only way to get to .400 OBP without ever walking. Ever. Ah, the Ted Williams with a lifetime .344 AVG and lifetime .482 OBP that never walked. Think about that. Lifetime .482 OBP. That's just insane. He was a great hitter and didn't seem to mind taking the base if the pitcher didn't want to throw strikes. He averaged over a 100 walks a season also. Even though he only averaged 120 games played per season.
  8. This is being discussed in Transactions.
  9. Finally someone who accepts it for what it is. Now, I just proved my original point pages back that Elia is getting too much credit and Cubs coaching is getting too much blame because he hasn't made any big improvements as a hitter; he's just slightly improved to mediocrity and started going for bunts and infield hits more and possibly refined some of his running techniques or workouts to increase baserunning ability and speed. I'm not sure I agree with that. His K's are down and his walks are up. He has a higher OBP right now than he's ever had. I did notice that he is seeing less pitches per plate appearance, however. But, if he's first pitch bunting a lot, that might explain some of the variation. I'm still convinced the Cubs coaches had a lot to do with his failures in Chicago.
  10. Why are you guys debating how good someone would be after taking away any element of their game? I'm confused. If Patterson can bunt for a hit, more power to him. A hit is a hit. Do you take away Adam Dunn's HR's when discussing his AVG? If it weren't for all those home runs, his AVG would be REALLY bad.
  11. That's not true, but he's not that far off from doing it. He's reached 195 K's in a season, and he's had an OBP over .400, but it wasn't in the same season. But, if there was a guy that could probably do it, Dunn is probably the most likely.
  12. Agreed. The strike out also prevents runners on base from being removed from the bases (except in hit and run situations or maybe a runner just attempting to steal, I suppose), but an out that involves contact could create a double play, a triple play, a force out of the lead runner on base and gunning down a runner attempting to take an extra base. The Cubs were one of the league leaders in K's a few years back, and they also scored runs much better than they do now, and they really don't strike out much anymore. The problem with this team isn't that they don't strike out enough or make contact with the ball, it's that most of them aren't very good hitters.
  13. In a sense, yes, they are team stats. But, if a guy is getting on base much more than someone else, he's likely going to score more runs. You can discount park effect if you don't believe it factors into a players performance, but I believe it can make a significant difference.
  14. I'm not buying your argument that his numbers are lower than Jacque's because of the division he plays in. Giles has played a whole 2 games in Dodger Stadium, 2 in AT&T Park, and 3 in Chase Field for a combined 32 at bats, and he has 11 hits in those 32 at bats (about a .340 average). Oh, and he has an OPS over 1300 in both AT&T Park and Chase Field. And I don't think I need to mention Coors Field. The bottomline is that Jacque Jones has outproduced the much wanted Brian Giles. For half the cost. I suppose that depends on what you consider "outproduced". Giles has scored 12 more runs, driven in 6 more RBI, and has a .388 to .327 OBP advantage over Jones while playing in a much tougher park to hit. I don't see it as coincidental that Giles numbers dropped significantly when he moved from Pittsburgh to San Diego. See how his SLG dropped in 2003 from Pittsburgh to San Diego. See any other player on the Padres team and how their SLG's dropped when they moved to Petco. It's a simple question. Who would you rather have? Jones, Neifi and Rusch or Brian Giles?
  15. Whoops. You're right. I did mess that up. However, Derrek Lee does have 3 more walks than the 2 spot in the Cubs line up.
  16. Sounds like Hendry and Dusty have him well trained to join the big club.
  17. Fun facts: Derrek Lee has as many walks as Juan Pierre and Neifi Perez combined. Derrek Lee has 3 more walks than Jacque Jones. The Cubs pitching staff has 5 more RBI than Juan Pierre. The Cubs 2 spot in the order is now officially worse than the lead off spot. Lead off= .290 OBP #2 spot= .288 OBP Brilliant!
  18. Oh, and...... Tim for GM!! :w00t:
  19. Sounds familiar. Yeah, good one. However, my list will only have good players on it. :D
  20. How 'bout the HGH supplier?
  21. Me. Neifi Perez will never bat above 8th in the order. Dempster will never sit more than 3 days in a row. Good hitters will hit at the top of the order. Bad hitters will sit on the bench. Players who don't have their head in the game will be pulled immediately, even if the inning isn't over. Umpires will not be someone I speak respectfully with and go sit down after they made a very bad call. I will likely get kicked out of the game after I have insulted him and his mother. I will consider PHing Zambrano over Bynum. I will not waste outs with stupid sacrifice bunts at stupid times. I will have the respect of my players because I will want to win more than any player on the team. I will inspire them to want to win. I will not burn out my pitchers arms in meaningless blow out games, or at any other time, actually. I will bench players who do not display a decent amount of patience at the plate. I will give my GM a list of players he can sign or trade for. All others need not apply.
  22. Giles still isn't hitting for a lot of power even away from Petco, only an .852 OPS. And how is Aramis doing? Players struggle, and Giles has been struggling a lot like Aramis. Of course, both players have been asked to carry their teams since most of the other players are horrible.
  23. Oh goody. Personal insults because my opinion does not agree with yours. It's really disappointing when a debate turns into personal attacks. I'm out. Oh, and you are not pardoned. Sorry.
  24. Do you really think that Corey magically grew up in one offseason? He's a completely different player out there this year. It could be that he transformed into a good player in one offseason, but my personal opinion is that the Cubs coaches messed him up so bad, he couldn't get anything going here. Hopefully, he will give some details as to why he's turned things around so well. I'd love to hear him say that the Cubs coaching staff is clueless. It would answer a lot of my questions.
  25. I suppose that depends on what his .850 OPS would translate to hitting in the NL Central regulary might do. Giles made his bed, he's gotta lie in it. Personally, I think he was a fool for going back to San Diego. But, the bigger fool was Hendry for not courting Giles the way he courted Furcal. For what he spent on Neifi, Rusch and Jones, he could have had Giles. Thank heaven we have Neifi.
