  1. And Budweiser is not an American beer anymore. They are owned by InBev.
  2. Hes one of those Augie Ojeda/Craig Counsell/Aaron Miles/Jeff Keppinger types who the Cubs can never get out. Great point. His career .264 .301 .342 .642 line in 436 PA against the Cubs show that he's a force to be reckoned with. Keppinger: .252 .299 .273 .571 in 155 PA. Augie: .243 .333 .243 .577 in 43 PA. Counsell is the only one that comes even remotely close to being a guy they can "never get out", and that's with a line of .256 .362 .379 .740 in 356 PA, so yeah, these guys all suck and nowhere near being "Cub killers." Hyperbole hy·per·bo·le  1. obvious and intentional exaggeration. I'm sure he understood that Craig Counsell doesn't have a .1000 batting average lifetime against the Cubs. Hardly a cub killer. Unless he's playing for the Cubs. ;-)
  3. U-S-A!!!
  4. Those good minor league players will eventually need to be paid, so relying on the farm doesn't necessarily mean decreasing payroll, just relying less on free agency. Here's something not directly answering your question, but close, I think: And this: Perhaps I am miss-remembering what I heard.
  5. I haven't heard that at all. The only thing I've heard is that Ricketts promised all profits from the team would be invested back into the team, leading me to think a drop in payroll would be unlikely. This is not the quote I saw and I guess you have to consider the source, but he does say that the farm system will be Here is the article How did you even put those two things together? Now I'll have to find the source for my original comment. I was just assuming that if you were going to rely on the farm team to feed the big league club, that you might not be handing out enormous contracts to those players hence reducing payroll. I know it is not a direct correlation or support for my original comment, but it seemed relevant.

  7. I have not read all the pages of this thread but isn't it true that the Ricketts are likely to lower payroll when some of these contracts come off the books? I thought I heard that somewhere.
  8. What is that bulge running down it's right leg?
  9. Which idea?
  10. I think they should just add a third to the group. That way, when Ron can gracefully transition into that "Fan in the Booth" character he is and when he can no longer perform, there will be an easier transition back to a two man team. Moreland would be fine with me. Prefer not Otto but you probably need a pitcher to counter Ron's "insight" on hitting.
  11. I am going to assume you are not dissing Mr. Bean.
  12. This. I don't have a problem with a player swinging at a pitch he things he can hit well early in the count. That said, I did not see the pitch so I can't really comment on whether he should have swung at it or not.
  13. I think Pat takes off the 5th inning.
  14. I believe the title of this thread is an implicit promise of chicks being in the thread and there are none. I feel duped.
  15. That was my question. It's a contraction of "Time is" so it should be "time's".
  16. I love me some priorlingus.
  17. A lot like this: http://www.chicagotribune.com/media/photo/2010-03/52551492.jpg He's gotta quit taking bites out of his bat with those crazyass teeth of his.
  18. How has he looked this spring? Quoting his stat line is all well and good. But how has he looked?
  19. But pitchers get hurt all the time, which is why it's risky to count on pitchers to carry your franchise. The plan did not work fine. The plan was to designed to make the Cubs as successful as the Braves, and they weren't even close. It is absolutely absurd to suggest the plan worked fine from any standpoint. They failed. They had a miserable record and were terrible far more frequently than they were good. In your opinion, was the plan flawed and therefore a bad plan or was it a sound plan poorly executed?
  20. I seem to recall too that folks were saying how much better Lee made Ramirez appear because of his size and ability to get balls Rammy airmails over to first. Is that still the conventional wisdom or not?
  21. The plan was to build the Braves 2.0, a team that would win consistently. They failed miserably. The fact that they actually did get a good amount of arms is meaningless. That was only part of the plan, and it didn't lead to consistent winning. They had 5 90+ loss season, only 2 90+ win seasons (and one required a 163rd game). Even discounting the first few seasons under this plan, they were 1032-1073 in 13 seasons after the plan was in place. It was a failure, no ifs ands or buts. Since 2003 They've made the ploffs 3 times and finished 2nd twice. That's not reaching the ultimate goal but it's not utter failure either. This is a ridiculous reply to what I wrote. The plan was implemented in 1994, it failed. The new plan in 2007/2008 was just to spend a ton of cash and hope for the best, it worked moderately, but still left them well short of being Braves 2.0. Seriously, it's moronic to pretend the plan was anything but a failure. In 1994 they decided to try and emulate the Braves by concentrating all theirs efforts on pitchers and trading the excess for bats. It failed. Miserably. Seems like the failure was in the execution, not the plan itself. Don't blame The Plan. The Plan was sound. (I think that is a quote from a Seinfeld, not my actual thoughts on the matter.)
  22. I thought that had been the case for a while. Develop a stockpile of arms and then trade them for the position players you need.
  23. I'm telling you guys, I have tickets available right now. 1/4 share of 4 seats of a Nights and Weekends package still available. $2800. Upper deck Sec 404, fourth row, left field. You buy the quarter share and you get access to 1/4 of the playoff tix too (they cost extra of course). The guys I have the tickets with (they are in my name) do a ticket draft and a 1/4 share gets you about 54 tickets spread over about 15 games (more or less depending on how many games you take 4 tix and how many you take 2). If you want to know about the location, ask Yeti or Fred Hornkohl. Both have been a part of the group. I make no money at this and you can sell the tickets wherever you want. Stub-hub has an arrangement with the Cubs. If you want tix and don't want to wait for your number to come up. Let me know! Get season tickets right now!
  24. Goodell: NFL would consider ban on 3-point stance This might be covered elsewhere but there it is.
