  1. http://twitter.com/#!/MLB/status/15912929299800064 Apparently. I have no idea who any of those players are save Adam Russell. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/G/Brandon-Gomes.shtml http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/R/Cesar-Ramos.shtml http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/F/Cole-Figueroa.shtml Guess the Padres really needed to someone to take the Eckstein role for them. Bartlett can claim the hotter wife, though (Kelly Bartlett vs. Ashley Eckstein).
  2. Bartlett to Padres deal finally went through. Rays get RHPs Brandon Gomes and Adam Russell, LHP Cesar Ramos and IF Cole Figueroa.
  3. Dave Clark in 1997 and Nady last year too. Hasn't exactly been a number of acclaim for the Cubs, has it? Fixed that. Thanks.
  4. http://twitter.com/#!/MLB/status/15869772461776896 Made official today, apparently. I approve of this. The team website rosters don't usually get updated until a few weeks before P&C; the Cubs usually update theirs around mid-January. Pena will be the first starting position player to wear no. 22 since Bill Buckner in 1983; everyone to don it since then has either been a pitcher or a bench player. The people who bought nameless no. 22 jerseys during Prior's run and have since seen those jerseys go from Prior to Hart to Gorzelanny to Nady are okay with this as well, I imagune. On the topic of jersey numbers, Kerry Wood reclaims his familiar no. 34 (sorry, Jeff Gray) to the surprise of what I assume is of no one.
  5. I would think all those people who bought nameless no. 22 jerseys all those years ago - and have since seen their jerseys go from Prior to Hart to Gorzelanny to Nady - are okay with this. Assuming Pena gets the playing time appropriate for a team's presumed starter at first base, he'll be the first starting position player to wear no. 22 since Bill Buckner in 1983. Everyone else to wear it since has been either a pitcher or a reserve position player.
  6. For those of you keeping track at home, when Carlos Pena suits up for the Cubs, he will do so wearing jersey number... (drumroll, please) I approve of this.
  7. [expletive] fire and save the matches. How about that. http://bit.ly/hQ8vxd Welcome home, Kerry.
  8. Doctors said he can't damage the thumb any further by playing. And even with a bum thumb, he's got a double-double tonight; Noah with one hand is still probably better than extended minutes for Asik.
  9. Bulls' Noah to have surgery on right thumb There are no words. That won't get filtered.
  10. And what I've heard says the Yankees aren't real keen on giving up Montero in any deal. Matter of who you choose to believe this time of the year, I guess. Point remains, though: the Yankees have Montero figuring into their plans for 2011 and beyond, big-time. Dempster's been nothing short of solid since returning to the rotation, and he's even been very good at times, but the Yankees wouldn't trade their top prospect for him. Likewise for Zambrano, even if desperation does set in over not bringing in Lee and at the prospect of Ivan Nova and Sergio Mitre filling out their rotation next season.
  11. The Yankees are reluctant to part with Montero for Greinke; they'd never give up him and what few other tradeworthy assets their farm system has to offer for the likes of Dempster or Zambrano.
  12. The final numbers, per Rosenthal:
  13. That pleasant screeching sound you hear from out east is the sound of countless ***hole Yankees fans hurling epithets at Cliff Lee for "not being man enough to sign with the Yankees." Ah, sweet music.
  14. I do what I can, friend. I have to justify the neat custom title somehow.
  15. http://home.comcast.net/~bcvm22/cubs/ronsaysdumpher.mp3 In the interest of full disclosure, this is an excerpt from track 12, "Heartbreak Dead Ahead", of Welcome to the Friendly Confines of the Pat and Ron Show, the delightful CD of Pat and Ron's best moments they published a few years back, ostensibly still available for order directly from WGN 720: http://www.wgnradio.com/marketplace/cds/wgnam-pat-and-ron-show-cd-html,0,6909283.htmlstory
  16. Dave Otto was doing color for the last day of the season. The Cubs' final home game was September 26 and Ron was on the call for that; given that the final road trip was San Diego and Houston and that Ron wasn't on the call for the Houston series, I would peg that 9/26 game as his last broadcast. Not to poo-poo your idea, Pool, because it is quite noble, but in addition to what erik said about the legalities, people can buy access to the complete 2010 media archives for about $25 and record just about anything they want digitally with a little know-how. Do you believe you'd find a buyer for your cassette? Again, please don't take this as dumping on your idea. Oh lord. What was Ron's final sign-off is just heartbreaking given the present day. http://home.comcast.net/~bcvm22/cubs/farewellron.mp3
  17. For those who missed it, it looks like WGNradio.com has a lot of it archived already. I'm sure the city's other outlets will have their share of material online as the day goes on.
  18. He'll be calling games with Jack, Lou and Harry now. Not a bad broadcast booth.

  21. Which I'm pretty sure players get a copy of when they sign on with Boras.
  22. Rays appear close to trading SS Jason Bartlett to San Diego for RHP Adam Russell and LHP Cesar Ramos. http://tampabay.rays.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20101208&content_id=16285834&vkey=news_tb&c_id=tb
  23. Twins trade SS J.J. Hardy and IF Brendan Harris to the Orioles for two minor league pitchers. Name on the first guy is fuzzy - supposed to be a Single-A pitcher by the name of Jacobson/Jacobsen - and the other is AAA reliever Jim Hoey.
  24. 7 years, $142 mil, says the Boston Globe by way of Rosenthal. http://twitter.com/#!/Ken_Rosenthal/status/12728109514100736
