  1. who cares if leadoff isn't a position. what's your point? roberts is a big upgrade to soriano at leadoff so that makes the team better w/ an extra bat in the middle & a 40 pt OBP lift to start the game. for those saying that the leadoff hitter only leads off the game...many times the pitcher ends up making the last out so i'd guess the leadoff hitter actually starts an inning on average 2-2.5 times/game. soriano has had many lower leg injuries including last year & he makes very poor judgements in running the bases. I think our hitting lineup w/ roberts & fuko is greatly improved. if we take another step to get figgins for cf then it takes yet another step w/ OBP-type players.
  2. thanks for the update Bruce. I really do appreciate it as well as your opinion. I agree with everything you are saying. I just have never liked Soriano leading off & I see Roberts as a perfect fit for our offensive needs as was fuko so feel we are definitely going in the right direction there. I'm equally as concerned w/ our closer. It is amazing that we still have as many holes as we do w/ this size of payroll.
  3. in most rankings that i've seen...roberts is the 5th rated 2B & DeRosa is rated in the 20's. Roberts is an all-star, a switch hitter, a leadoff hitter & stole 50 bases a yr ago w/ a high OBP. DeRosa has started only a few yrs consistently during his big league career. He does not lead off, switch hit & is considered by most in baseball circles as an ideal utility/supersub.
  4. 2B or CF more than likely. fwiw...steve stone is a big fan of Roberts at lead off & does not think soriano is best for this club at that spot. Having said that, he thinks the Cub needs to upgrade starting pitcher first followed by a leadoff hitter second.
  5. hoops...this club needs a legit leadoff hitter. you don't agree?
  6. fading off the point. I do not like Soriano at leadoff. I think Roberts is one of the best in MLB. We were short a bat or two last year so w/ Fuko added as well as moving sori down in the order & an on base machine/base stealer added at the top in Roberts than I think we've improved immensely. Not to mention soto's bat, more healthy dlee & move theriot down to 8th as he has a good eye at the plate. I agree we need another quality starter & I am not confident yet we have a true closer to feel comfortable with.
  7. maybe because hendry is not interested in those players? maybe he prefers roberts as I do?
  8. Greene is a strikeout machine & beyond that, we are in dire need of players that get on base instead of strikeout. Soriano is needed much more down in the order & Roberts is a great leadoff hitter from getting on to stealing bases. Theriot is another guy that finds a way to get on base. DeRosa is a great utility player & makes the Cub better.
  9. those are hardly big signings. they do, however, look like the kind that JH & the JH's before him used to make.
  10. we need a leadoff hitter & roberts is one of the best. fill in the blank plus roberts is far better than derosa/theriot.
  11. why? because roberts is a natural 2B & derosa is a natural utility man. He is like many spare parts in that the more he plays, the more he looks like the utility guy he is. there is a reason why he has never consistently held down a starting 2B job. Ala, Jerry Hairston, Todd Walker, Fontenot & theriot. these are solid players that are best suited as spare parts like a Tony Phillips. Great guys to have around.
  12. burnett is hurt all of the time & costs too much. no thanks
  13. i disagree wholeheartedly. oh well. if we get roberts, he'll hit leadoff. you watch.
  14. this reverse thinking makes very little sense IMO which is what a message board is by the way. saying a k is better than a ground ball double play is like saying a running back that only gets 2 yards/carry is great because the back never fumbles. why should we have to settle for either? soriano should be hitting down in the order driving in runs. lee is not a leadoff hitter so he swings more aggressively which results in more k's. that's more accepted than in the leadoff position. leadoff hitters should take pitches...definitely take more walks than k's. i never said anything about ground balls being a good thing. they should get on base....however it takes to do it...and don't make outs...ground outs, k's or otherwise. they also need to be a good baserunner. a base stealing threat is a bonus. soriano swings like a middle of the order guy. he does not take the mental approach to the plate as a leadoff hitter.
  15. so striking out 25% of the time & not moving runners is a good thing?
  16. i never said juan pierre was a good leadoff hitter either. I want a guy that gets on base & does not waste outs by striking out 25% of the time like alfonso does.
  17. we are a traditional leadoff hitter, a real closer & a #2 starter away.
  18. tiger...you really think soriano is a good leadoff hitter, we have an effective closer & that we don't have a lineup full of whiff kings? Did you watch the playoffs last year?
  19. u of M...you posted prior's '03 stats in response to my original message. what's your point?
  20. good, someone else gets to pay him to throw a towel. Even when he does pitches, he is a batting practice pitcher. Why you guys are getting worked up about this guy is a joke. Get worked up about our lack of a leadoff hitter, closer & overall lineup of strikeout kings.
  21. IMO we need to add a top 3 starting pitcher, need to consider getting a real closer & would help our offense immensely if we got a real leadoff hitter to play either center (Figgins) or 2B (Roberts) so we can move strikeout king (soriano) down in the order where he needs to be. I doubt any of this happens, however. Another year of no closer & w/ Sori batting leadoff is another year of coming up short.
  22. again, sosa, mcgwire, prior & wood are not on the list. i'm just saying, i'm surprised as i thought they would be on it based on earlier reports.
  23. i'm not following you. mcgwire, sosa, wood & prior are not on the list. i'm only asking why? i thought they were supposed to have been named.
