  1. lee's defense was pretty bad early in the year but it's improved (at least he has cut way back on the errors). elvis andrus made 32 errors in 106 games at low A, 31 errors in 125 games at high A and 32 errors in 109 games at AA. he leads the AL in UZR and has long been regarded as a premier defensive shortstop. errors are a terrible way to judge a guy's future defensive value, especially if the guy is in his teens as the errors are probably mostly due to a lack of experience and focus. if castro is still making 30+ errors 2 years from now i'll be concerned, but right now i'm more interested in his range, arm and ability to read the ball off the bat. Playing top shelf major league defense at shortstop is one of the most difficult things to do in baseball. It takes some time to figure out how to do that.
  2. I don't think they meant questionable range going to his left. I think they mean questionable range for the left side of the infield (i.e., shortstop). Maybe he fits better defensively at 2B.
  3. Now you're just being ridiculous. Hendry would never do this. He would sign him to a three year, $30 million contract with $10 million player options for the fourth and fifth years.
  4. Jeff Baker will be eligible for salary arbitration after this season.
  5. Looks like there's a pretty significant drop off after 12. That's a very good list. I don't care much for Marquez Smith as a Top 25-er. Off the top of my head, I value Berg, Coleman, Maestri, and Beliveau more. Ty Wright probably just as much as Smith.
  6. We traded RHP Matt Avery for him. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2008-11-03-1259179122_x.htm
  7. This doesn't have anything to do with this article, but I've never seen batters look as foolish against a slider as many have against Michael Wuertz's.
  8. Are you thinking Vitters is going to get promoted to AA Tim even after his struggles at Daytona and now the injury? I would be a little surprised by that. I hope they don't have Lee skip a level. Let him play SS at Peoria. Fit the other guys in around him.
  9. Lake is striking out in 31% of his at-bats. While you can't really say that any prospect has "no chance", Junior Lake is about as close as it gets. Move on and focus on legitimate prospects.
  10. Never should have signed him, but, now that it's done, manage the roster to keep everybody, if you can. Then bring them all up in September. Bad baseball players help teams win games all the time.
  11. Not if they can all handle shortstop.
  12. The Cubs have placed infielder Andres Blanco on the 15-day disabled list with a left calf strain. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20090804&content_id=6240022&vkey=pr_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc
  13. Vitters is no better than our third best prospect, behind Cashner and Castro.
  14. The very definition of an unnecessary prepositional phrase. Im not quite sure what you even mean by that. Are you suggesting that our offense sucks in general? I am.
  15. The very definition of an unnecessary prepositional phrase.
  16. Has Vitters fallen behind Cashner and Castro in the ranking of Cubs' prospects?
  17. If by "disappointed" you actually meant "relieved", then yes.
  18. I'm surprised and quite pleased that Hendry made a decent deal here. Grabow was my last choice for LOOGY, but he's got a chance to be an asset. It will be even better if he winds up as a Type B free agent rather than Type A. It's nice to add Gorzelanny. Do what you can to turn him into Ted Lilly. If that doesn't work out, you can try to make a LOOGY out of him. Harrison seems like he has a little potential with the bat, but he really has no defensive position. Eric Pattersonish. Hart and Ascanio were nice depth, but this kind of pitcher is the one thing that our farm system is good at producing.
  19. yes fox isn't going in this deal, i don't really see why pittsburg would want him They just acquired Jeff Clement.
  20. They arent awful. Gorzelanny has been good in 2007 and 2009, just horrible in 2008. Grabow has pretty good three year splits against LHB and is going to be Type A Him being Type A is a BAD thing. Type B would be better.
  21. This trade is going to be historically bad. It's going to make us pine for the days of Ed Lynch.
  22. Can someone explain to me why anyone would prefer Grabow over Beimel? He strikes out more guys. That's it. Don't worry that he walks more and is more prone to the longball.
