  1. It might not be nerves - his control is his biggest weakness. Bruce, it's good to see you around the Minor League forum lately. Good to be at a minor-league park. I think it would be a good idea, if feasible, for major-league beat writers to spend a series with one of the minor-league clubs.
  2. Carpenter may be a bit nervous. Four walks in the first two innings, prompting two visits by the pitching coach.
  3. Gamel must like Iowa pitching. He just launched one off Carpenter. Two in two days.
  4. Bibens-Dirkx getting hit hard. 6-0 Nashville in the second. Sounds pitcher Sam Narron has a homer, and Mat Gamel crushed one over the wall in right.
  5. Des Moines? Who did you piss off? j/k Are you planning on asking him some questions that will either thrill posters here or turn this forum into a warzone? My idea to come here. We aren't doing a full schedule of Cubs travel yet (better than last year, though), so I thought this would be a good idea. I don't know about the questions thrilling people or not, but maybe the answers will.
  6. I am in Des Moines. I plan to speak with Ryno today and watch tonight's and tomorrow's games before picking up the Cubs in Cincy Friday.
  7. Yeah, he threw 24 pitches, so i wonder what happened? On a better note, Wallach and Raley each had decent outings. On Rusin, taken out for precautionary reasons for possible oblique or rib-cage ailment.
  8. Wow, game threads barely making it to two pages these days. Ouch
  9. On this homestand. I was originally going to blame the marketing department, but I hear a lot of the players wanted it.
  10. Link? just kidding - who is going down? They haven't said, but I imagine Russell would be the one to get sent down. http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/4215
  11. They needed somebody to start because Atkins is coming today.
  12. I commented on previous thread about Blanco. He had been outrighted once by St. Louis. He cleared waivers. He had the option of refusing an outright by the Cardinals again and declaring free agency. He chose to stay with the Cubs.
  13. Also, Rule 5 pitcher Mike Parisi outrighted to Iowa. He had been outrighted before, with St. Louis. After clearing waivers, he had the option of refusing an outright by his former club and declaring free agency. He chose to stay in the Cubs organization.
  14. Are you guys going to be "scouts" or "stats people" with Theriot's defense? :D
  15. Thank you Bruce. Hear anything juicy or is it basically calm, besides the trade? Sorry for the delay. Was a little busy. It's calm on the surface, but underneath, there's a whole lot of talk going on. I think we'll see some action at the winter meetings. I drive down to Indy Sunday and will be blogging all day every day there. Should be fun. Bruce: what's your take/opinion on the Cubs not offering arby to Harden? I have no problem with it. There's nothing saying they can't re-sign him. They apparently feel the shoulder is too big a risk. What happens if he blows out in spring training (let's hope not, of course), and you're on the hook for $10 mil? As I've said, none of us has seen the medical reports, MRIs and X-rays. Let's see what Rich ends up with.

Having been around this group for several years, I give a resounding "yes" to your question.

  18. Padilla? Not in this life or the next one. Don't worry about this rumor.
  19. Thank God. Are they actually having talks about anything(other than Well for Bradley), or is this just pure speculation? I'm told the Cubs have never discussed Vernon Wells. I don't know where this came from. But Cubs people I talked to were incredulous. They have talks ongoing with several teams, but this one has never been a possibility in the minds of the Cubs.
  20. This one ain't happening. The Cubs are not about to take on Wells' money.
  21. Is this his last year in Chicago? I have to believe that it is.
  22. Honest to goodness, I wanted to talk a little baseball with Milton today when I approached him by myself in the clubhouse. He wanted no part of it. His first response was, "I'm not talking about my knee." I said, "Fine, I'm not here to do that. Let's talk baseball." He was pretty short with me most of the time, and I was trying to be empathetic toward him. It's too bad it's come to this.
  23. He mentioned him in the others to watch list, so I doubt it. Maybe one of his sources to compile the list is the guy that hates JayJax No sources. I just kind of compiled it quickly to keep the discussion going. Jackson probably belongs in the top 10, and I did mention him. These things tend to be fluid. Tomorrow, I could have him ranked No. 3. And I just might. Or 4 or 5. What are your thoughts on Logan Watkins? It's not that I don't like the guy but you just don't see him in most people's top 10 (I would have him in the 15-20 range) since he's so far away and doesn't have as much potential as Hak-Ju Lee. I haven't seen him in person. (After having seen Peoria, I think it would be great for every beat writer to see at least a couple of minor league teams each year, but that's a story for another day.) He's a year out of high school, so I think you have to be careful in jumping to conclusions either way. He's not going to hit for much power. Cubs people tell me he's very athletic. His name came up a couple times in my minor league talks with the Cubs when I would ask about guys to keep an eye on. It would be fun to see him play alongside Lee for another year. He could wind up being a utility-type guy or work his way up into a starting job.

  25. What a nice night here in Peoria, despite the rain. I need to do this more often. It's a lot of fun seeing the kids and visiting with them.
