  1. Never. Ever. In fact, I always liked the guy. But we had to chase down a "story" yesterday. It was a rumor that made the rounds across the country. There was nothing to it. If he's that thin-skinned and wants to take cheap shots at me, that's fine. I always found him to be great company, generous with his time and all that. He even picked up a dinner check for me when I was out one night. I'd hate to think if he ever were a GM how he'd react once the criticism started. One thing I said on my blog yesterday is that if we hear a rumor, Jim Hendry says to call him and he'll do the best he can to say if it's worth chasing or not. Sully and I each talked with multiple Cubs people yesterday when Kaplan put it on his blog, and they all said it was the first they heard of it. Too bad Steve feels this way.
  2. I'll take the word of the guy who still gets to go on road trips. And a guy who has a major agenda against a team. And remember, he quit the job. The Cubs never fired him.
  3. It's really hard to say. I would not be surprised if they did nothing. The bullpen really is their primary targeted area. They're going to see how Ryan throws in Iowa. Other than that, they're really locked in as far as positions on the field.
  4. Total hogwash. Two Cubs people said it's the first they've heard of it and that Jim hasn't talked with anybody about this. Let's remember Stone has a, um, a, shall we call it, a thing for the Cubs. And Kap is his buddy. This is total fabrication.
  5. Bruce Miles with yet another cutting edge stories about the Cubs #-o I'm getting tired of reading all these stories. Everyone knows the problems with have with our contracts/the new ownership situation/players under performing on the field. I'd love to see an article about solutions and ways we can get out of the contract hell we are in (if an option exists) as supposed to rehashing the same article we've been reading for a year. Trouble is, there ain't many options out of "contract hell."
  6. Jersey, Appreciate the mention. If the Cubs don't make the playoffs or make it and get blown out again, I think things could get interesting. --Bruce
  7. They changed a couple things from the original card: Gathright, CF Miles, SS Fukudome, RF Lee, 1B Hoff, LF Font, 3B Scales, 2B Hill, C Marshall, P Sorry for the confusion. Fixed on the blog, too.
  8. I'm fairly confident that will be asked i sure hope so but unfortunately whoever asks it will say "lou, why miles in the 8th?" and accept his answer and leave it at that rather than asking a "tough question". know what i mean? you don't seem to understand how press conferences work. you don't ask the manager a question and then get into a shouting match because you disagree with him. who said anything about a shouting match? for once, i would just like to see a chicago reporter actually ask a tough question and have lou answer it. i get that they wanna remain on lou's good side for access rights and all that jazz, but still... beat your competition by asking tough questions. your columns will be more popular by doing so. I see you're well versed in how things work.
  9. I'm fairly confident that will be asked Every day, pal, every day. Next question.
  10. I think we've gotten the better of Billy Beane trades in the past. This is probably the first time he got the better of us as far as I can recall. Whether Beane got the best of the Cubs is still open to question at this point. Gallagher has gone from No. 2 starter to out of the rotation for Oakland, as his velocity dropped as spring training went on. Eric Patterson is in the minor leagues, as is Murton, with Colorado. If Harden stays healthy and makes 25 starts and most of them are of the quality variety, then I think the Cubs get the better of this deal. But it's too early to judge now.
  11. http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/1743 Gaudin released. I like the fact that they kept Patton and Guzman. They had some pretty gutsy scouting on Patton.
  12. Not a whole lot to say at this point, guys. Just bear with us for a bit. We had a meeting today, and this was not an easy decision to make for the people who made it. I'll be up in Milwaukee next weekend. I'll also do the best I can from afar. I hope we're back out there sooner rather than later. In the meantime, stick with me. I appreciate your support. Bruce, Are you still going to be writing the game stories and notes for away games or will the Herald be relying on the AP or other sources for these stories? I'll be doing some analysis from afar with AP doing the game descriptions. I'll keep the blog as active as I can, too. Maybe we can get into some different and interesting things. I'll be in Milwaukee next weekend, though.

  14. Thanks for the info Bruce. It is always appreciated. Are the Cubs looking to add anybody to their major league roster at this point, or are they happy with Gathright as the final bench spot? Are any potential deals more likely to be minor league ones for depth in case of an injury? Position-player wise, roster is set. Gathright is on the team. They might sign Lamb to a minor-league deal, but that's about it.
  15. I wonder what the motive for the players is for this. I know many times they try to avoid too much of the statistical side not because they don't like it, but because they don't want any focus on that to affect them on the field. At the same time though, it can be hard to evaluate exactly what your weaknesses are on defense (as far as I know, position players don't look at videos of their defense nearly as much as their batting or opposing pitchers) and so their section could give them a fair objective opinion. Then again, who knows. They often have very different perspectives about things than fans. It looked to me like they were genuinely curious. They also seemed to think the book was fair to them. You're right, players have a different take on things than fans. That's probably why Theriot made his comment about errors. Pitchers, such as Maddux, talked about wins. That's their perspective.
  16. Like Early Edition, except it's not delivered by a cat. :D Maybe they can bring that show back, only with the cat bringing in the Daily Herald.

  18. You guys might get a kick out of this one. It's tomorrow's feature posted online today. There's also a sidebar under the "Cubs" section: http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=283037
  19. Derrek Lee to the bench please It's spring training. I love the insider information you provide us!!!! ;) That's why I'm here. Hoffpauir certainly has earned a spot on the team, and he has one. Lee with be there the vast majority of the time, but Hoffpauir will get a decent amount of playing time. That's good to hear. How much time do you think he'll see backing up corner outfield spots? Not a whole lot, but talking to Quade today, he seems to think Hoffpauir can be serviceable.

  22. Thanks for the mention. Len and Bob are the best.
  23. Bruce's blog: Confirmed in an article on cubs.com. You have to confirm what I've told you? a good message board poster always gets multiple sources. I can live with that, then.
