  1. Agree w/ everything you said except that I cannot imagine the Braves trading Jones in light of the year he is having. He's probably earned a new contract that will make him a Brave for life.
  2. The gen. consensus here has been that Matsui will be Yankee next year unless he curses out Big Stein - may be even then.
  3. I agree in part - Many is my main target. I would then target Encarnacion as a relatively inexpensive RFer - good OPS, and good defensive RFer with a plus-arm.
  4. I agree. There are no quality OF free agents out there. I like Giles, but would rather start using our farm system to produce established MLers like Manny.
  5. I understand what you're saying Rocket but this team is as thin skinned as Baker. He has set the bar and they are following it. Bingo
  6. Dan McNeil brought it up, and if the Indians keep coming on, he might be proven right: Do the current Sox, their recent woes, and all of the nonsense excuses they are making ("they stole our signs"; Ozzie's beanball rant) add up to a 04' Cubs-like collapse? Are they showing the same signs?
  7. It makes sense to trade Walker from the stand point that our IF issues going into next year aren't quite as tough as the OF ones. As such, if you had to trade someone and you want that someone to fetch something valuable in return, Walker makes sense (he's worth a lot more than Jeromy). That said, we don't have to trade anyone, but creating more depth in the farm system couldn't hurt, since we will need to pull off a trade to get an impact OF during the offseason.
  8. Piniella's career winning % pre-Tampa is lower than Dusty's career winning %. That's slightly scewed by the fact that Piniella has been managing quite a bit longer - six seasons longer, actually. My point (again) is that Piniella wins in the playoffs, where Dusty has had his most embarassing moments. I do not think it is fair to compare the two simply on the basis that they both prefer vets over younder guys. You never hear Piniella making excuses for his guys like "its hot", or "we had to play a lot of games in a row w/out a day off". He does not suffer that nonsense. I'd say not making the world series with a 116 win team is pretty embarrassing. If that's how you define embarassing, then there isn't much I can say in retort. And you are missing the point of my post.
  9. I did not know that. I still say that things don't add up here though.

  11. If Kerry isn't ready in Feb., there is going to be hell to pay. And someone should have Dusty committed for picthing him last night. I tell you: this stinks of in-fighting between Hendry/MacPhail vs. Dusty.
  12. Perez is a very good utility IF. He was not used properly this year by Dusty, however, Nomar's injury wasn't planned either. I just don't understand what most people expect from a back-up SS around here, b/c the hate for Neifi here is completely unwaranted. He gives 100% all the time & has done very well since he has put on a Cubs uniform. I am fine with Neifi coming back next year as long as he is a back-up SS or utility IF. I agree with both of you. I have never understood the anti-Nefi stuff that goes on here. Its not Nefi's fault that Nomar has been made of glass since he got hee. Its not Nefi's fault that Dusty is stubborn and insistent on misusing the majority of his roster. Guys like Nefi and Holly have given their best efforts without complaint. They may not be as good as we'd like, but if you want to blame someone for that, blame the guys that put us in a position where we have to rely on them every day.
  13. Would you start Wegman? only against the cardinals. he kills the cardinals. The only problem with that kid was his love for Jerry, the veteran he idolizes but who is on he extreme downside of his career. Remember his excuse for letting Jerry pinch hit in a tough situation: "He's a pro. He'll come through." Remind you of anyone we know? Also, that movie rules just b/c of this line:
  14. if we can get him, we should? one player doesn't make a baseball team. i'd love Manny for a reasonable price, but that isn't going to happen. great offensive player, monster contract. would you rather have Manny in LF or decent players all over the OF and some help in the pen? what do you think benefits a team more? Again, I don't want to rehash the same convo again. See here, beginning about half-way down the page: http://www.northsidebaseball.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=24050&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15 One issue I may not have fuloly addressed - yes, I think we can get Manny and still address our other issues. And in light of what else appears to be available, I'd rather have Manny, Pie and a PTBNL than three avg guys in our OF. Manny is well on his way to being an all-time great.
  15. Before arriving here, all Dusty did was win. Piniella has won a WS and his teams in Seattle were constatntly on the cusp of greatness. Dusty has been to a WS, but all other times in the playoffs w/ the Giants were busts. Look back at the 1st rnd series vs. the Mets in 00' as example 1A. Valentine made him look a guy coaching a Div. III team. My point is that Piniella has been a lot more succesful - and clearly knows how to manage a picthing staff, especially a bullpen.
  16. =D> Friggin' A. That guy wears more body armor than King Arthur and all of the Knights of the Roundtable.
  17. And, more than likely, simply turn it into "he doesn't have enough speed to play CF" garbage. He doesn't have enough speed or superb enough OF instincts to make up the difference. He's played like two innings of CF that I know of and I believe that was because the CF left the game and someone had to play there. What Tim said. Needing good up the middle D is an old baseball adage that, unlike needimg "five tools", is dead-on, IMHO. Murton doesn't have that kind of range, nor the arm, near as I can tell. If he at least had one of those...
  18. I can understand not wanting Lou b/cof his Dusty-like dislike for younger guys. But all the guy did prior to arriving in that baseball cespool that is Tropicana Field was win, and win at level that Dusty can only dream of.
  19. Suggest that mods combine this with the earlier Manny thread where we had some pretty good discussion re our chances of getting him. My opinion remains the same: its a no-brainer. If we can get him, we should do what we have to to put him in a Cubs uni.
  20. No, I don't think so. I am going to the game tomorrow and am half-hoping that they fall flat again so I can boo them off the field in disgust. These guys need to have a message sent to them. If Dusty won't do it, may be we should.
  21. Dubois will be a career minor leaguer, nothing else. Normally when people make statements as fact, they try and back that up with some sort of rationale, logic, statistics, etc. I also see DuBois as the classic "AAAA" guy, mainly due to his poor D combined with his apparent inability to hit any major league pitch other than medium-speed fastballs and sliders that don't break. Just my two cents. That said, he's probably worth more than the Single A pitcher we got for him.
  22. I agree on both accounts, but that's b/c I agree with Hoops that Pie should get his shot in 06'. How many times have we seen guys like him make the jump from AA and set the world on fire?
  23. That's bloody awesome if true. If he plays well may be his trade value will increase.
  24. I am hoping its Joe Girardi. Ooops. Guess we got Justin "Future Maddux" Berg instead.
