  1. You Cards fans and your sarcasm!
  2. Hopefully he was signed with an eye towards exactly that. I have less of a problem with this if he is to be the team "Mulholland" and is there b/c we have no idea who will be traded, but we are sure that someone (i.e., Williams, Hill, etc.) will.
  3. Agreed. I go through fits where I get down on JH for his moves (or lack thereof) last offseason, but they might look very different if Nomar's groin didn't self-destruct in St Louis. I am not obsolving JH, but I think more of the blame lies in the dugout as opposed to the owner's box.
  4. Vance, don't the Cubs have to wait a few weeks before Hendry can begin negotiating for Giles? I thought there is a 2 week window after the WS where current teams have exclusive negotiation rights to their own FAs. :? Right. 14 days after the W.S. As soon as that window opens, though, I'd have my offer ready and pick up the phone. Would you start at 4/50? I wouldn't. I'd be willing to go there no problem, but I wouldn't start there. I would, only because it lets him know we are dead serious about signing him. Understood, but you may drive the price up considerably by starting there. You have to give yourself some wiggle room to match other offers, otherwise you might push him past your drop-dead price.
  5. I'd like to see Ronny play every day, either at 2B or SS, but I appear to be in the minority on that one. I also do not think Furcal is worth the scratch he is rumored to be seeking.
  6. To be fair, wasn't Hendry quoted as saying that the team's OBP needs improvement? Or am I making that up? In any case, we are not getting Young, so lets put that to bed. Mench is far more likely, but I do not think he is impact bat we need.
  7. I cannot believe this topic isn't getting more play from the sabermatricians here. You guys ought to be beside yourselves. Remember the "Riccardi v. Hendry" thread? It was like a holy war! The main reason to get excited is that this might lead to regime change here....
  8. Keep in mind also that he's a 10-5 guy, meaning he can nix any trade. That said, as I have posted on this bd several times, I would love to have him.
  9. Wow - I wonder what has happended since Tracy got canned that lead to this.
  10. Wow. For the record, I think we have our LF problem solved with Murton, and believe that he is the best piece of the Nomar deal (to date).
  11. What throws fuel on the fire of any rumor these days *cough*dustytothedodgers*cough**hack**cough* is that MLB frowns upon teams announcing much of anything during post-season play. I mean, they COULD have agreed to huge mega deals and they just can't SAY anything because of pesky Selig. Right?!?! I think that's accurate. We've heard it several times before. If the deal for Giles is done, we won't know until the day after tomorrow. That would prevent a story about it showing up on the official Padres website, but not the other sites. How do you explain those? Don't the papers in San Diego have to turn a profit like everyone else? And yet, nothing. Are they afraid of the wrath of Selig also? How should I know? I am speculating just like everyone else. May be the source isn't one the papers typically use. I recall earlier this year that Bruce Levine reporting that a major deal would go down within 24 hours. It never happened, and no other Chicago media oulet reported it. Stuff happens.
  12. Agreed. There is no way Prior is a #3 starter. Zito is not better than Prior. It is ridiculous to even suggest that he is. I agree that Prior is better at this point, but he's never put together the sort of season that Zito has.
  13. That is if the four horsemen don't roll by first... Right. I thought I heard a trumpet last night... If you live in Oak Park/River Forest like I do, the sound you heard was fireworks and cheering Sox fans. Oy! #-o
  14. Must be thinning - two straight WS's that lasted only four games. Last year's was more dramatic and attractive b/c it was the Red Sox. Does anyone know the t.v. ratings for this year? I'm betting they were substantially less than last year. EDIT: My wife informs me that the ratings are amongst the lowest ever. The Giants-Angels series was the prior record holder, assuming my wife's info is accurate.
  15. That's a fair point, though I don't think its the reason the Stros got their buts handed to them.
  16. Maybe the only good part about a White Sox sweep! Exactly - better than having to painfully muddle through 7 games waiting for the inevitable.
  17. That would be difficult as I feel pretty bad this morning myself
  18. Agreed. And Tony Perez deserves some consideration as well.
  19. Agreed. I wish Dusty could get even a little fired up and take it to the team sometimes. Edited to also agree w/Indiff's last post  A Dusty outburst would be tremendous. Maybe he doesn't care enough to get mad? he's embarassed because last time he had a public tantrum it resulted in one of the funniest fark photoshop threads ever. post plz I think this is the one he was talking about. http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=919494&mode=voteresults That's bloody hysterical. And seriously, what should Garner do to counter the fact the Baseball G-ds are on the side of the Southsiders?
  20. And, BTW, I do not believe, based on my readings on baseball history, that the 1919 Sox were the only team that ever threw a Series. They were, as they say, the only one who got caught. And to hold that against the 05' Sox is silly.
  21. He was already my favorite Cubs rookie since Prior. He's quickly becoming my fave player overall.
  22. I think this is more difficult to swallow for those of us who live in Chicago. Having had a brief interlude in New England (3 years) which ended last March, I can tell you that had the Sox done in this in 04', I would have taken notice, but it would not have had the effect it has had now that I am back. Its like a bitter taste in my mouth, and frankly, I am not sure why, other than the fact that I am at the peak of my frustration with the organization. I think that frustration is quadrupeled by the fact that: 1) we were so close in 03'; 2) we have, on paper, as much talent as any team in the NL; and 3) both Sox teams have ended their respective droughts in the last two seasons. Of course, the fact that the ball has bounced the Sox way at every turn this postseason makes me furious also.
