  1. I like that team. I am not a big fan of Kearns b/c of the lack of a track record, but he certainly has enjoyed hitting in Wrigley in the past. He' s the key to that lineup, IMO. Welcome to the forum.
  2. Sarcasm? If Bradley produces, I am fine with him hating all peoples, Jeff Kent and his family included.
  3. He earned his contract on the basis of a dominant performance in the 03' playoffs. Its a shame that he has been injured pretty much ever since, but I can live with that. I think that's pretty unappreciative of you, considering he had the biggest hand in bringing the Cubs their first playoff victory since the end of WW II.
  4. Neifi has no business on our baseball team ever. You can find someone better, cheaper, younger, or all of the above really easily. He never should've been signed in '04, he never should've been retained, and we shouldn't be talking about bringing him back. Ok, lets hear about those guys (whoever they are) and why they would be better. I'd like to see some stats on those guys too. Look, I don't think that anyone is arguing that Neifi is a good player, or even the best choice as a 24th man. I agree with CubsWin that, the past is the past, I've already vented my frustration with the 04' and 05' seasons, and I am ready to move on. Moreover, no one knows what JH is going to do w/ Neifi or anyone else, yet some people appear to be ready to jump ship b/c of a rumor re Neifi. I think its premature. If it happens and you hate it, bash away. I'll wait.
  5. Who said that? I believe most are saying that dusty can't be trusted to start Cedeno over Neifi, so Neifi wouldn't be just a bench player. Neifi off the bench is a solid addition to our team (defensively and offensively with limited ABs). neifi starting is an offensive nightmare, especially when dusty throws him in front of lee and ramirez in the lineup. Wow - a semi-positive remark about Neifi. I agree with CubsWin; Neifi gets killed around here without basis. Its not his fault that Dusty missuses him or that Nomar's groin tore in half, making him an every day player. He's a limited offensive player who would make a good backup MIFer. And to further back up CubsWin's point, here is a post from JR re Neifi which appeared today over in the "Neifi / Sabermetrics" thread:
  6. it depends on what you get in return. if someone wants to get robbed, yeah, i'd consider trading Ramirez, Lee, or Z. He gets the least national attention, but Z's probably the most valuable of the three.
  7. On second thought, Walker and Hill for Sizemore and a B-level prospect?: http://www.baseballreference.com/s/sizemgr01.shtml
  8. I think that's incorrect. They disagreed, Howe gave his opinion, Beane told him where he could put that opinion in no uncertain terms, Howe ignored the warning, and Howe lost his job, in spite of the fact that his team had won 100 games that year. Disagree with what? The manager having the final say on which player plays and which is player is replaced in a particular situation in a game? Howe had his ideas of how the 25 guys Beane brought him should be utilized and Beane has his idea, they weren't on the same wavelength and Beane in his position of authority wanted someone who was likely to manage the game similar to how Beane would. Like I said, you think Hendry would tell Baker how to manage? I don't. No, my point is that Howe clearly did not have the "final say". Beane made it clear several times who was in charge. He put the punctuation on that point by canning Art after he won 100 games for the second time.
  9. Do you think its possible that guys play harder behind certain pitchers?
  10. i'd take sizemore. Me too, but I think Crisp or a bullpen arm is more likely. You?
  11. Just exploring this a little more: by your logic, since baseball is such an indivdual's sport, and the "team concept" means little, can one man carry his team to victory without help from his teammates? Technically no. But a pitcher can get very close. Although, very unlikely, a National League pitcher could strike out all 27 men in a perfect game and hit a solo HR for the only score. The only reason he can't completely carry his team to victory is that he needs a catcher to catch the ball. Ok, but since that happens about once every ice age, would you agree that 99% of the time a pitcher must rely on his teammates to properly catch and throw the ball (including throwing to the correct base, executing run-downs, etc.)?
  12. Again, I haven't seen anything (yet) that leads me to believe this is a "fact".
  13. I think that's incorrect. They disagreed, Howe gave his opinion, Beane told him where he could put that opinion in no uncertain terms, Howe ignored the warning, and Howe lost his job, in spite of the fact that his team had won 100 games that year.
  14. Well, I guess there's no real way to refute that, other than to say that I disagree with nearly everything you posted.
  15. A GM doesn't tell a manager who to play or who not to play, a GM fires a manager who isn't on the same page as him. Hendry would be overstepping his boundaries if he wanted to become an arm-chair manager, that's our job. That doesn't stop Billy Beane (source: "Moneyball"), and many on this bd. hold him up as one who runs his club the right way. He and Howe had many fallings-out re who should be used, in-game strategy, etc. Beane and his mentor, Sandy Alderson, disagree with the common baseball conception that the manager is the "face" of the team, and instead believe that the front office (specifically the GM) should set the tone. Beane is the exeption to the rule. Name one other team in MLB that uses the manager that way. Not my point. Point is that Beane does things that way and they win consistently.
  16. How can you hate Craig Biggio! Blasphemy. Look up baseball player in an encyclopedia and there's Craig. I just have a dislike for a player who leans into pitches with the benefit of an extremely large elbow pad. If he could take all those HBP without use of the pad, I might have more respect for him. Yeah, that's always rubbed me the wrong way also.

  18. I disagree, buy hey, that's the beauty of this country and this bd.

  20. I think its crazy to exclude a guy who could be effective simply b/c the manager misuses him. The better option, IMO, is for Dusty's boss to tell him how he is to be used.
  21. THANK YOU =D> This thread is overrun with overreaction. it's called speculative emotional venting after a ridiculously disappointing and frustrating season. come down from the pulpit. Its one thing to speculate. Its another thing to trash our team based on stuff that hasn't been confirmed by anyone other than a guy who most agree isn't very reliable. That said, if JH does sign him to a 2 year deal, trash away. I agree that he's a backup and should only get a one year deal.
  22. Hmm. Tell that to Andy Reid, Donovan McNabb and the rest of the Philadelphia Eagles. Football is very very very different from baseball. How so?
  23. THANK YOU =D> This thread is overrun with overreaction.
  24. The point of this thread is that objective stats show that, if used correctly, Neifi can be an effective ML player.
  25. Wow. Sorry, my Cubbie spell check must be broken.
