  1. Buster Olney is reporting that the deal for Cameron is very close. No word on who the Mets are getting, but speculation is at least one reliever.
  2. I'd like to think that most journalists understandthat there role is to report the news and not create it. However, that just ain't true. Go crazy, Jay Marriotti. He was writing a column. Columnists write opinion pieces. Beat writers report the news, but that wasn't the role he was playing here. Either way, saying the Cubs absolutely should go out and sign Giles because he's the perfect fit for their biggest need would not be creating news, it would be expressing an opinion. That's a matter of opinion. In any case. my point was that journalists - be they columnists or beat writers - aren't supposed to make themselves the story. I won't go into this further; don't want to completely hijack the thread.
  3. Seconded. This smacks of last year's Beltran situation, except that he's a legitimate first class OF (last year's stats not withstanding). Conclusion: Boras took a hit of coke prior to making this statement. He's full of it.
  4. I've said it before, I'll say it again. Bless you, sir. :D Enjoy the vacation.
  5. Its probabl6 six of one, half-dozen of the other, but largely depends on what your options ar ein the two hole. If you have Pierre and Furcal, Pierre and Walker, or Furcal and Walker, I agree that Giles hits fourth. If not, who knows?

  7. Exactly - he's a great addition if he's hitting lower in the lineup. That would be awesome.
  8. Is Sing still playing 1B? He might be a nice chip in a deal for Dunn (as Casey's successor). Hill, Sing and CPatt and lets make a deal? (did I just hijack this thread?)
  9. and meticulously trimmed facial hair
  10. The Cubs were interested in trading for him last year before he re-signed with the Twins. He was thought to be avaliable last year so the Twins could re-sign Shannon Stewart, he almost certainly will not be back with Minnesota this year (I think Kubel's healthy this year and is ready to play).
  11. I could see it being Marshall and Mitre. That might be a pretty even-up swap.
  12. Look, I really do not want to argue about this. Someone just point me to the source that says JH has any interest in Jones, man-crush, infatuation...whatever. And if he winds up signing him I'll eat crow. 8)
  13. the sad thing is that we're now going to see 10 replies talking about how much they hope we actually do have that lineup. That's the spirit! Genralize and make unsubstantiated predictions! Where has it said that the Cubs are at all interested in Jones (other than Gary Matthews talking to someone at the airport)?
  14. Huh? Wasn't this just a rumor or supposition? That is unless you and Todd are close... Well, Todd definitely asked not to be traded without consent (read it in a cubs.com interview earlier this year), and usually Hendry tries to maintain good working relationships with his players. That last statement contradicts your entire argument - if he maintains a good relationship w/ his players, why then would he tell Walker that he will not be traded and then go ahead and trade him a few weeks later? Conclusion: Walker pulled an Ace Ventura and was talking out of his rear-end.

  16. Which would also mean that the Cubs would have to be leaning towards giving in to Furcal's recent demands of a 50m contract. This won't be done anytime soon, unless the Cubs REALLY overpay. I could be wrong, but didn't his agent essentially retrac that, noting that a spanish-speaking reporter mistraslated his comments (or something)?
  17. Sheesh. Who would ATL play at C? They've only had Estrada for two years. I don't see them doing that deal, even if they lose Furcal.
  18. The Cubs have been doing this as long as I can remember. Let Player A walk because you're pursuing via trade/FA Player B. Player B doesn't come here, Player A is gone, so you're stuck with incredibly inferior Player C. Yeah - none of th other ML teams do this...ever. I never once said no other team did it. I'm stating the Cubs do it far more often than other teams. Do you closely follow the free agent negotiations of all other Major League teams? Enough to know that the sort of scenario described above has happended countless times to other teams and Gms. It does not make JH blameless for last year, it does, however, mean that the worst-case scenario is less likely to happen the second time around. More importantly, the second-time around has barely begun.
  19. The fact that he's in his late 30's has absolutely nothing to do with it, right? It does. But his decline has been alarmingly sharp compared to most sluggers of his magnitude. This leads one to wonder... With some sluggers, they just gradually decline until they can't find a job anymore, or retire. Some just hit the wall. McGwire, Mays, etc just hit the wall. Decent one year, then terrible the next. Sammy was one of those. Its probably not the best idea to reference Mark McGwire as an example of an aging star who hit the wall as opposed to someone who used steroids. True, but my point is made. Your point is mde that one of your examples is a guy who hit the wall suddenly and was a user?

  21. Gammons also noted that Bill James has predicted the following for Murton, Pie and Cedeno in 2006, with a little note for Cubs fans: Hmmmmmm....

  23. He's old and homosexual. I don't think that comment was necessary or factual. There's no need to bring up someone's sexuality. Sorry if it was inapporpriate, but i'm pretty sure he's admitted he is. So what? If Ellen Degeneres could hit 40 HRs and play a solid CF, I'd be begging JH to sign her up.
  24. Agreed. Its a starting point. You never know.
  25. Sign me up. Problem is that Phillips made the prediction.
