  1. Now a BB. With as cold as it is, you'd think he'd be in a Rusch to get these guys out and get in the dugout. O:)
  2. ...if at all. Levine says that in spite of the fact that Hendry will be extended(which he says will be announced tomorrow afternoon), they want to see results on the field. Also notes that they are happy with his (Dusty's) focus and approach this year, and that Lee will be extended soon for more than Konerko got. Smart move by Jim, if true.
  3. Alfonseca sucked. He had one year where he racked up 45 saves, but didn't pitch great at all. He was a closer in name only. And Clement, was, remained and still is a walk machine who cannot be counted on. I used to follow the minors more then and was starting to like Dontrelle around that time. I didn't predict he'd be a Cy Young candidate by now, but I sure as heck had no interest trading away young talent to add those marginal veteran (expensive) upgrades to what was nothing more than a mediocre team still a couple years away from potential greatness. And I thought he had a very good chance to be a valuable major leaguer. Yes, I knew who he was, and no I didn't "know" he'd make it, but I liked his chances. While it's revisionism to say you knew Willis would be great, it's just as revisionist to suggest nobody knew who he was. I don't think its revisionist - its probably an overstatement though. Accordingly, I think you'd agree that few knew who Willis was prior to the trade. I'd also add that he jumped from AA; I don't think he ever played a game at AAA.
  4. The only reason the Mtre trade was bad was b/c we gave up too much for Pierre alone. Had it been any two of the three we traded I wouldn't have raised an eyebrow. We have a lot of potential in terms of starting pitchers; Mitre had no place here. And how about letting him pitch a full season in the majors before annointing him the pitching version of Lou Brock.
  5. Agreed. Anyone have any ideas as to why they waited until now?
  6. Matt's article is very good, and its true value is buried in the middle of it. Matt concludes: Bingo.
  7. I don't think that's the point. He's still better than Konerko so expect his contract to be in that neighborhood. The Cubs don't want him to become a FA and have other teams attempt to drive up the price. I'm sure some teams would be very willing to overpay so the Cubs will want to be generous without breaking the bank. The best time to do that is now. But Konerko won a world series so he's clutch or something. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see Lee get a lesser contract than Konerko. So again...how does winning a World Series = clutch? I mean Konerko was solid during the playoffs, and outside of maybe Game 2 of the World Series, where he hit the Grand Slam, nobody outside of the White Sox had even heard of Konerko. The Sox pitchers were clutch. True, but the reality is that he was the best position player on a WS winner, and accordingly, to the victor go the spoils.
  8. Well, if Hendry wants Dusty back, the best thing he could do is wait to see if the team has a great year, then extend him. He could say he was forced to extend him because of the season like Angelo did with Jauron and extend his career with the team at least one more manager. I think we agree here - if the team wins 95 games and goes to the playoffs, I would accept extending Dusty.
  9. Not cool. I like Nomar, and wish he was less frail. Seconded. Third.
  10. I am happy to have Jim back for a few more. However, I certainly hope that he makes Dusty earn an extension by showing us something this year.
  11. If Miles has a good year, I will be convinced that Jocketty and LaRussa have signed some sort of Faustian pact signed in the blood of Cubs fans. :lmao:
  12. I got to see Matty's HR in the first; opposite field job; probably a little wind-aided, but it was still awesome. Is it wrong that I have man-love for Matty? Should I change my username to that?
  13. Sure does; yet ESPN Radio 1000 says it might drizzle and be generally uncomfortable, but no real rain.
  14. I hope our professional ballplayers have a better attitude. Good one. I quote Eddie Murphy in Boomerang: "What time does the show start?" (i.e., when's the first pitch, CDT?) Check the title. Duh. Show's how long its been since I hung out on the game thread forum. Also shows that I will have a hard time concentrating at work today.

  16. It bothers me to this day that we the fans were a million times more excited than the team was about the HR. They were already deflated. By contrast, everytime one of thier guys got a hit the Fish were like a Little Leagure team. I think that shows that (other than Wood) the team was waiting for something bad to happen again. Dusty deserves at least some blame for not getting them keyed up in that regard.
  17. Levine (I know, I know) is reporting that Lee has extended the regular season deadline and this thing will get done this week. I would change the title of this thread until we have info to the contrary.
  18. Here here. I was throwing a major tantrum before he hit the HR, and then I started to think the momentum had shifted.... :wall: :wall: :wall:
  19. I'm with you. I think the Cubs and Wood agree to throw out that option year and re-negotiate a new deal. But this only happens if Wood stays healthy after his return. Anything less and he's gone. I see absolutely no point in doing this unless he has makes a minimum 15 starts during which he pitches well above avg. Look, I know we all love Woody, but if he can't be relied on it makes no sense to bring him back. Freeing up 13 mill (or 12 or whatever he makes) so that we could sign another big bat would go a long way towards improving this team.
  20. My answer to the title of this thread: Think Suttcliffe in 84'. In other words, he needs to picth so out of his mind such that management will fear a march on the Tower if they let them him go. We have several young arms waiting to take his spot (Marshall, Guz, Ryu, etc.), and Prior's walk year will be here before we know it. My prediction is that our rotation will look something like this next year: Z Prior Marshall Guzman Williams or Vet FA Pitcher
  21. I don't think Kerry would waive his NTC to go to NYC. Agreed. And the Fish would have to be on crack to deal Cabrera and Willis. They might never recover.
  22. Don't know. It should be pointed out that I'm annoyed by hot chicks that wear clothes too. Well, isn't everybody? When I was young and unmarried, I would walk the streets of my beloved Chicago in early May and argue to my friends that the City Council should pass an ordinance barring women under the age of 30 from wearing anything other than shorts at least 3 inches above the knee and tank tops when the temperature is 70 degrees or above. Chicago has the most beautiful women in the universe. I married one. :D
  23. Dude, people on this bd. have issues with tons of different stuff; why should hats be any different?
  24. Thanks for the piece of mind, Bruce.
