  1. Let's be clear: I don't think too many folks here believe Beane got the better end of this deal. The reason some of us are critical of Williams is that getting Swisher won't help them win in the short-term. This team simply isn't as good as Cleveland or Detroit overall. Their rotation is a mess and their best position players / DH are clearly on the downsides of their careers.
  2. I agree the Sox got the better end of the deal (Swisher is young, productive and cheap), but unless Kenny plans to follow this up by improving his rotation and trading for a real SS, I don't see how they compete with Detroit and Cleveland over the next several years. Thome, Konerko and Dye are each on the wrong side of their careers (though Konerko as a full-time DH would be good), and you accurately summarized their pitching woes. If it were me, I probably would have dealth away the tradeable veteran parts and try to land a cornerstone prospect, but that's easy for me to say. They'd lose their fickel fanbase for another 5-7 yrs if they did that.
  3. This is a bad deal for the A's, IMO. I understand that Beane feels that the Halos are all but uncatchable in his division and doesn't want to waste time trying to build a team with a limited payroll capable of competing with them. But he could have gotten a much better haul for Swisher, IMO. EDIT: And I agree that Swisher doesn't make the Sox near good enough to catch Detroit or Cleveland. He would have made a much bigger difference for the Cubs.
  4. Hawaii and Kansas. They need to quit pretending that teams from the WAC, MAC, C-USA, Mountain West, and Sunbelt are D-I, this isn't basketball. In my opinion they should make D-Ia Big 10 SEC ACC Big 12 Pac 10 D-1b WAC MAC C-USA Mountain West Sun Belt Each division has a 10 team playoff, with the top two teams from each conference getting into the playoffs. The teams in each division only play schools in their division during the regular season and total records count for playoffs, not just conference records. Edit: Oh, and the money generated gets distributed evenly to all institutions in each division. These are places of higher learning after all. I think you are painting with a bit of a broad brush. The Sun Belt, MAC and CUSA (in its current form) can't compete, I agree. But the WAC (Boise, Hawaii, Fresno St) and Mountain West (BYU, Air Force, TCU, Utah and occassionaly Colorado St) conferences have solid, if not upper-level, DI programs.
  5. Michigan's D gave a blue print for beating the spread offense - complicated, inconsistent, LeBeau-like blitz schemes executed by fast LBs and strong DBs. Most spread QBs aren't able to deal with that, IMO.
  6. Agreed, Oklahoma seems like the no-doubter. Florida should be top-5. USC is not exactly going to be sucking it up next season either. They only have about 12 5-Star QB's to choose from. Texas will be much improved with their very young defense having a year of experience, and does Mizzou really lose anyone. I can't see any real scenario with Chase Daniel's leaving. Mizzou will be top 5 - 7, IMO. If Daniels leaves he's a moran. EDIT: Supposedly Notre Dame's newcomers will be top-notch. Now they just need a coach. :P
  7. I know that I started the Fire Lloyd Carr thread back in Sept after the "Team That Must Not Be Named" loss, but I got chocked up watching the players carry him on their shoulders today. He's a good and decent guy who just can't coach anymore. I am glad they played so well for him; just wish they wouldn't have waited until now.
  8. Who peed in your cheerios? Take it easy - he just asked a question.
  9. Or get sick as is the case with me (and Tim's been under the weather as well). Suffice to say that this thread is under observation. I think I spend more time on NSBB when I am sick. Feel better.
  10. This thread is an example of what happens when the Mods go on vacation.
  11. Tough to say without objective medical evidence and an expert to interpret the same.
  12. I'll miss Mark too, especially the guy we saw in 03'. I just don't think he has it any longer. Its a damn shame - the dreams of just a few years ago have been blown to pieces.
  13. Noan Ryan had great mechanics, IMO. Link
  14. Nor is there any reason to say things like that about a ballplayer. No one is getting defensive because some people don't like Prior. People are taking exception to the lack of class/maturity in the way some present their dislike for him. Two completely different things. And people need to stop exaggerating the level of support Murton gets. Saying he deserves a shot to start or thinking he has a chance to be a quality ballplayer does not equal thinking he's a Hall of Fame candidate. I agree with the bolded portions, but I think that it is hypocritical to take this position if you (not "you" grassbass, but "you" in general) are one of the many here who see no problem with engaging in ad hominem attacks on Hendry (weight) and others. I also think some folks are in fact getting defensive b/c people disagree with them. For example, I just read that certain (unnamed) people are "dumb", presumeably because they do not agree that the Cubs did not in fact make a reasonable offer to Prior.
  15. No, just one chronic injury that never seems to heal.
  16. Sure there was, take him to arbitration. Give him a reasonable contract and extension. Those are two. Here's another, not treat him like a rented mule and then insinuate he's a [expletive] to anyone that will listen. I agree you shouldn't call him out or rip on him if you want to re-sign him, but can someone produce evidence that proves that the Cubs really did insinuate (a subjective term, by the way) that he isn't tough? I mean, I have seen it said several times here, but that is all that I can recall. And BTW, what is a "reasonable contract:?
  17. So signed in Philly last night (per ESPNNews bottom line); crisis averted.
  18. Only when the woman dies to her good Christian death will I believe she wasn't a witch. That's a fantastic line. Do you mind if I use it?
  19. Sort of what we figured. It will be interesting to see his home/road splits.
  20. If the Cubs want Blanton, they better hurry. My brother in NYC just heard Buster Olney on some station saying the Mets just offered: Carlos Gomez, Aaron Heilman, and Kevin Mulvey. And Olney thinks Beane will strongly consider it. After the Roberts deal happens (or should I say "if"), I don't see how we can match that offer.
  21. Taguchi kills us, but that is about it. I wouldn't care so much I guess if it were a one year deal. Perhaps it is b/c Fuld is valued by MacPhail?
  22. I agree with this. Its not that I don't like Felix, its that I don't trust the Cubs to help him develop the way they should.
