  1. unless Tom needs somebody to find rare truffles for the new fancy food options at the park Can we go ahead and start calling Vogelbach Porkins as nature and Goerge Lucas intended?
  2. The Cubs had the best farm system then went on to have successful seasons in 2003, 2004 (mostly), 2006 and 2007. Some parts of that farm were turned into assets like Derek Lee. Secondary guys like Farnsworth became key contributors.
  3. The real damage of the Vitters pick is that he is the new poster child for the "no Cubs prospect will ever be good again" meme. See also "all Cubs prospects are overrated." Corey Patterson is dead. Long live Josh Vitters.
  4. Nashville looks like they will be tough to catch. Setting up another first round meeting with the Blues. The only question is which team will have home ice advantage. This is what I hate about the new playoff format, the Hawks and Blues could finish 2nd and 3rd in the conference and have to play each other in the first round. I think that was kind of the idea- to build rivalries by having the same teams play each other every year. I remember when they used to do this back in the 80's and 90's. I just don't like it as much as I did back then. I know what you mean. Rivalries have to be organic and should be in flux. The Hawks rivalry with Vancouver, for example.

  6. For whatever reason, the Press in The Peg hates him. Complicating the issue is that he is African Canadian. Is it racism? They don't seem to have a problem with Buff. It's seems like he might be an immature jerk. He's the very definition of the "Change of scenery" guy. The Jets kind of stink without him but seem intent on getting rid of him. The problem for the Hawks is that he makes too much money. They'd have to trade Sharp and probably also Versteeg in order to free up enough money.
  7. Cubs have the best bull pen in either league. Russell and Bryant split the ROY vote and they give it to... who cares 'cause there's a parade.
  8. One of the other videos that comes up on the link is titled Patriots win greatest super bowl in history. Where does this one actually rank?
  9. Don't pitchers and catchers report in 2 weeks?
  10. Anybody catch Key & Peele's super bowl special? Parts of it were a pretty good send up of sports journalism.
  11. Whoever called the play (Carroll/OC/Wilson audible, whatever) out thought himself. You've got 1-3 plays left so you line up and you go with your best shot. If that doesn't work, oh well. But you have to go with your best option, which was running the ball in some way with either Lynch or Wilson. I have less problem with the play call than I do with the execution. Wilson shouldn't force that throw.
  12. Who votes for MVP? I think the media would have made the case for Chris Matthews and not given it to Lynch out of spite.
  13. Thanks. That was me in that costume... as far as anyone knows.
  14. Yeah, a 22 year old who can reach some sort of free agency without actually playing in the NHL is a weird system, and it probably makes a lot of sense for a currently good team to be trading those guys for 18 year old versions. It's the same premise as the rule 5 draft: keep teams from stockpiling prospects. You could argue that the salary cap should be pretty effective at doing that though.
  15. Clendenning was going to be a RFA next year. That wouldn't have boded well for roster flexibility. As far as offense first defensemen go, TJ Brennan is probably better. Clendenning hadn't been as productive this year and there's definitely a logjam of Defense prospects at Rock Vegas. Forsling is only 18 so it's unlikely he contributes to the Hawks for a couple years. He brings the possibility of eventually being able to "replace" Keith down the line. Whether that happens remains to be seen. If he is that good, the trade is a steal. If he's at least serviceable, it's still good. Even if he never makes the NHL it's probably still not terrible since it didn't look like Clendenning had much chance of making the team any time soon.
  16. I'm not sure if this has been put forward before but here's a rule change I'd like to see. Remember a little while back people were grousing about the extra point being a boring play and what to do to make it more interesting? The NFL competition committee IIRC was looking into ways to spice it up. Here's my idea: the player that scores a touchdown has to kick the extra point. In the case of a completed pass, the receiver would attempt the PAT. The team would also have the option of the two point conversion. Anybody that plays RB or WR in the NFL has the athleticism to be at least decent at kicking PATs. The success rate would not likely be the 99.9% it is now. I think the players would enjoy the challenge. Teams would still need someone to kick FGs so the kicker doesn't lose his job.
  17. Ravens fans aren't enjoying it at all for some reason and I'm surrounded by them. This makes me want the Patriots to win. The League could then give them a slightly smaller football on the trophy.
  18. Kickers used to microwave footballs so they would go farther. The league took over the kicking ball and that "scandal" disappeared. Why does anyone care about this?
  19. I look forward to Lynch getting hired as an analyst for ESPN after he retires.
  20. Jackson will be an interesting test case to see if they just release him and take the salary hit in order to keep a better player on the roster.
  21. 2012 was just as bad. Only thing I really remember about that game was Pierre asking every player if they were going to start hitting in whichever period was next. I think it was the pro bowl that really undermined all the other non MLB all star games. Once football got away with no one even trying the others followed suit.
  22. The campaign next year should be not to send more players to the ASG. No one plays hard and it's unlikely that anyone gets hurt but I'd rather let our guys rest on the beach than have to spend a long weekend in a place like Columbus or Ottawa or wherever going from one event to another.
  23. some of the comparisons are great. Josh Vitters = Dave Gibralter. Like they didn't just make that up.
  24. The NHL all star break is the worst. MLB is bad but at least the game is watchable. This is like having the pro bowl right after week 8.
  25. Very few teams can pull off the system that's so good anyone can step in and play QB and they still win. To make that work requires a really good O line- something the Bears haven't had during the Cutler era. If you're paying your QB superstar money, you have to live or die with what he gives you. Unless you go the great defense/ lousy offense route but that is no longer a winning formula in today's NFL.
